I've been using this grinder for almost a month now and it is a considerable upgrade from my 1Zpresso JX hand grinder. The most noticeable improvement is the consistency of grind. The Ode Gen 2 produces fewer fines and results in a much cleaner, clearer, and overall tastier cup of coffee. The coffees I've brewed using this grinder were delicious.Additionally, upgrading from a hand grinder to a quality electric grinder also streamlined my workflow. I grinds beans very quickly with no issues of stalling or grinding. The ionizer works incredibly well in minimizing static. I no longer have to spray beans with water. After several grinds, there will still be some fines that end up clinging around the chute and dosing cup so you will need to do some cleaning every now ... It IS a rather expensive grinder so it's definitely for those who take their filter coffees seriously. One more thing: Cafune included a complimentary bag of Kaito LØVE medium roasted coffee beans. The coffee was delicious and one of the best medium roasted coffees I've tasted. It was certainly a great way to break in the Ode Gen 2. The grinder was packaged nicely and arrived in a couple of days. Thanks Cafune!

I purchased the Ode Gen 2 after watching several reviews praising its no-mess anti-static system, as well as improved flat burrs. The Ode Gen 2 produces a marvelously clean cup for the price range, and the ionizing anti-static system keeps retention low and the grounds free of cling. No need for RDT here! My one and only gripe with the Ode would be the grind ranges printed on the reverse side of the hopper cover. I'm currently brewing a Medium-Light roast, (61/49 Colortrack), and am way past the "Pour-Over" range. To get a 3:30 brew without underextraction notes, I'm grinding on number 2. The Pour-Over range suggests 4 as the lowest setting. This is a bit misleading and wasteful, as I took the suggestion at its word and had to work my way down. Lighter roasts need a ... Add a disclaimer for the roast level of the coffee that the range is suggested for. "*Grind ranges for medium roasted coffees" Then add a quick "For lighter roasted coffees, you may need to grind up to 2 whole numbers finer than suggested. And for darker roasted coffees, up to 2 numbers coarser". I believe this will help users get started faster and have less hassle and unpleasant brews due to under/over extraction from following the guideline.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. Grinds finer than Gen1… thanks!! Initially noticed big reduction of mess. First days anti-static worked a treat, but now more messy than Gen 1. Could something have failed or disconnected to cause the anti-static mechanism/system to malfunction? Retains more than Gen 1.2nd issue is the hopper lid isn’t flat. It doesn’t fit as snugly… Hoping time and gravity will eventually flatten it… but maybe this is a known defect?3rd is the adjustment dial rattles. It has more play in the axial direction. After pouring out the ground coffee into filter, I tap the catch bin against my palm to settle and gather the remaining few grams of grounds… the Gen2 catch bin rattles and rings; Gen1 felt like a solid object that would last for years. In my workflow, I’m not tapping the bin against anything sold, just the palm of my hand. Besides being a bit thinner walled than the Gen 1 bin, the issue is that one of the two fins isn’t attached as well, so it resonates and rattles. Perhaps this is an inconsistency of manufacturing
My one-year warranty expired last week. I have the version 1.1 grinders. I really like this grinder. It’s compact, fits easily in a cupboard (we keep our kitchen countertops clear,) solidly built, and only weighs 4.5kg. I’ve ground 11.6kg (26 lbs.) of beans, but still cannot grind beans on the lowest setting (1) without the grinders striking each other. But that’s not an issue for me as I grind on 2 for my Origami and ESPRO Bloom drippers, my Technivorm Moccamaster, and my Alessi 9090 Espresso Maker; and 3-2/3 for my ESPRO P7 French Press. The retention is low, typically varying from 0 to 0.3g. But, to get that low retention I hit the knocker 3 times, then give the ODE a lateral push to rock it sideways and let it come to a stop; I repeat that another two times, and ... The retention is low, typically varying from 0 to 0.3g. But, to get that low retention I hit the knocker 3 times, then give the ODE a lateral push to rock it sideways and let it come to a stop; I repeat that another two times, and then hit the knocker 3 times. The retention varies with the type of bean, so at times I also give the exit an upward rap with the flat of my hand to catch grains. Some reviews complain about the “mess” the ODE creates but my experience is that the amount of chaff/grains that end up on the base depends entirely on the beans. My favourite bean is 49th Parallel’s (dark and oily) Organic French Roast; the retention is 0-0.1g and there is almost no chaff or grains to brush off the base; light roasts create more chaff and grains. The ODE only stopped grinding unexpectedly once; I believe a large bean got stuck in the burrs, so I turned it upside down, gave it a few bonks with my hand, turned it upright, and started it working again. I’ve read reviews that criticize the catcher, particularly the vanes on it. I like the catcher. If you don’t like the vanes, pour the grounds out opposite them. I find the vanes useful when I use the ESPRO Bloom as the fluted filter has a small diameter and the vanes direct the grounds to the base without many hitting the wet flutes. The magnet in the catcher is a mixed blessing. It holds the catcher exactly where it should be to collect the grounds, but I’m uncertain if the magnet would affect the magnets in my Hario scale and cause it to lose accuracy; I confirmed that an empty 45mm high plastic chip dip container is high enough to separate the magnets so I put that on the scale and the catcher on it when I weigh the beans. All told, 5 out of 5.
This is an excellent coffee grinder, and it performs as advertised. Compared to the OXO conical burr grinder, the Ode is unbelievably quiet and efficient. It grinds through 100g of coffee within a minute, and my brews have improved. I really like the ability to upgrade the burrs as well. The attention to detail is really on point, whether it's the mechanical dial, the tab to release stuck coffee grounds, or the magnetized catch that will always snaps into the correct spot. There isn't much to critique. It can be a little messy, but it's more manageable and easier to clean than the OXO. I do find that when grinding a larger amount, around 100g, it's best to break it up into smaller batches instead of grinding it all at once. Lastly, I would have preferred the hopper ... I am very pleased with my Fellow Ode Gen 2 grinder. After literal months of research, being indecisive about whether or not I wanted a grinder that could also do espresso grinding for the future, countless reviews and YouTube videos I settled on the Ode. I primarily drink filter coffee (Clever Dripper and V60) so it made sense to get a grinder that excels in this type of brewing.Aesthetics:The grinder is fantastic to look at. I have a black and white theme in my kitchen, so it fits perfectly. It has a sleek aesthetic, and while the grinder is quite deep, it is not very wide making it easy to fit in almost any space. The hoper, dial and catch cup all go together really nicely and it has a smooth finish that's pleasing to the touch. I think everyone has their opinion on aesthetics but it would be hard to argue that this is not an attractive piece of coffee gear. No complaints here.Noise:I had read a lot of reviews previously which stated that this was about as loud as lower end grinders (e.g. Barataza Encore, Virtuoso, etc.). I have not owned an electric burr grinder of any kind previously, having only grinded my coffee with hand grinders so I can't speak to the noise comparison. What I can say is that the grinder is way quieter than I expected. While I would agree that this could potentially bother someone sleeping in the room next to you in a small apartment, I don't think it's anywhere near what I would quality as loud. Overall, very pleased/surprised here.Speed:Again, a category in which I had read reviews saying this grinder is somewhere in the middle for speed of grinding, and again I was very pleasantly surprised. So much so that the first time I used the grinder I thought something was wrong because the grinding noise stopped a mere 10 seconds after I had started the thing. The grinder is very fast for my daily dose of grinding (22g) finishing at about 10-15 seconds. I don't know why you would need something grinded faster than this... so no complaints here.Grind:The main question. Does this thing grind well? I have previously only used hand grinders which benefit from the slower RPMs of your hand/arm motion to provide better grind uniformity. That being said, this electric grinder easily crushes what I was able to achieve by hand. Not only is the bed of my pour over/clever dripped no longer as muddy on occasion, but I can see that the grind is very uniform. I have only been running it at about a 6 on the dial for my pour over / clever dripped and this has been working well for me. Great tasting cups so far.Static:One of the main reasons I wanted the gen 2 was for the static issue fix. I know you can always do the RDT method to minimize static, but I like that the grinder has something inherently built in to help mitigate. For me the real test would have been how much coffee grinds/residue I see on the grinder itself and the rim of the catch cup. Having seem some video reviews I saw how bad the gen 1 was and even the gen 2 had some. My particular grinder seems to have almost no static going on. If I brush the inside of chute I of course get some grinds, but none of these are visible from the outside. Once I start adding RDT into the mix, I'm sure the retention will be lessened even more. Overall, extremely happy with how the new anti-static technology performs here.
I thought I would share a bit about my buying decision here. I’ve been using a Comadante C40 v.3 as my primary pour over grinder for the last couple of years. I’ve always quite happy with its performance for use in my chemex/v 60 (preferring it for pour over, over my Kinu Classic M47 which I use for espresso only). However, there have been one or two things that irritated me about the Comadante (a) I really don’t love changing the settings across brew methods- the click system is less than ideal in my view- I was not able to quickly switch to other brew methods and then switch back; and (b) it took me too long to manually grind out coffee when I need coffee for more than a couple of people (when it was just me it was just fine). Of course, I wanted to try different grinders/profiles out of curiosity as well (flat burrs ideally) . So an electric grinder made sense- but I was looking for something that would not compromise in the cup- would be good for single dosing (I tend to use a variety of coffees and mostly lighter roast coffees) with perhaps a bit more clarity- and allow me to switch brew methods a bit more easily. So I had been considering alternatives for quite a while and finally settled on the Ode v. 2 with the v.2 burrs. So far, I can say the following: v.2 of this grinder has really addressed a lot of the issues that made me stay away from v.1 (I just didn’t want to be irritated) - I find it to not be messy at all- with very little retention- and I don’t have issues with the hopper- the beans do not get stuck- really this has been a joy to use operationally. Fast- reasonably quiet- and neat- build quality seems fine- better than I was expecting. On the burrs- I had had my eye set on SSP Multipurpose burrs - but thought I would give these a go based upon the positive reviews and the purported similarities. So far, I am really quite happy. I’m getting to know the burrs still - but so far, I’ve noticed somewhat more clarity than with the Comadante (I’ve not tried back to back comparisons thus far though I think that is something I will try soon). Lots of room to grind finer- I am finding myself using setting 5 for v 60 for 30g. Though it is stepped- I don’t think presently that it will be a problem. The only method other than v60 that I’ve tried with this grinder thus far has been cold brew - it worked great for that (at setting 10)- a few other methods to try out with this still (I’ll try Aeropress next given how much room I seem to have to fine tune). I did consider lots of other grinders-- Lagom has some interesting offerings that I also considered (and I picked one up for espresso) but happy with this so far. I may at some point pick up some SSP MP burrs- but not sure that given the results I’m getting that I will go there. And great tthanks to the great team at Cafune- as always helpful/very responsive to questions- and everything is packaged with care and shipped quickly.
Some context, this is my second Ode. The first one died after about a year of use normal use. After quite a bit of wrangling with Fellow on chat, in frustration I called up their store in SF and worked through them (amazing). They thankfully sent out a new unit. That is indeed cool. The problem is that the unit, in general, is still not great-great. The build quality IS excellent; the fit and feel are really good. The issue is with some of the functionality. For one, the bean hopper's angle pitch is off, which creates a situation where your beans have to be manually, by hand, nudged in for grinding. Its a small nuance but you want a $250 grinder to really just grind, not be persuaded to grind. Like, you want it to feel as if the machine wants to grind, like its waiting to grind in the morning. This unit continually makes excuses, not truly relishing in the joys of its single function - grinding.
My second Ode. Replaces my original KS-model that had the finger guard fall into my grounds. KS CS graciously sent me another Ode (THANKS!!!!!).I replaced the burrs with my old Gen 2 burrs. Took a bit to dial them in (about a pound) and it's going about as good as can be, although as the burrs and machine continue to break-in, there's a few refinements that always happen.New Ode still has the annoying "whirring/whistling/whining" noise that the KS model had. I tend to tune it out, but it's noticeable (although less than the KS model, but that had been running 70-80g of coffee daily, sometimes more). I'm hoping that it will break-in a bit better and go away, but not gonna hold my breath. New unit is definitely quieter than the KS model, but again, I used the heck ... MoreMy second Ode. New unit is definitely quieter than the KS model, but again, I used the heck out of the KS model, so can't complain. My biggest gripe is how there's waaaaaay more grounds that collect at the chute and also spray out from between the chute and the cup lid. I do the wet-spoon-stir that's recommended in the YouTube video and now 'pop' the cup lid up so that it touches the bottom of the chute. It helps with the spray-out of grounds, but still has a bunch of grounds collecting there. Hopefully that's just the static and sharp edges of the burrs that will break-in after a ton of use (I've got about 8 pounds through the burrs and 4 through the new Ode).Overall, this is an improvement from the OG KS model and I'm still a fan of Fellow since their Duo (2014). Lol...they're gonna hate me for bringing that up.
