(2,428 reviews)

Grinding for manual brewing requires a grinder that provides consistent and precise grinds. The Fellow Ode Gen 2 grinder meets these requirements, and it has features that improve coffee quality and convenience. The grinder is equipped with 64mm flat burrs, allowing uniform grinding for pour-over, French press, or cold brew. The new geometry of the burrs improves extraction and clarity, especially for light-roasted beans. The Fellow Ode Gen 2 uses a single-dose loading system so you only grind the amount of coffee you need, rather than wasting or leaving stale coffee in the hopper. The auto-stop feature ensures that the grinder stops once the desired amount of coffee has been ground. It features an easy-to-use knob that lets you adjust grind size from fine to coarse. The grinder is quiet and fast, grinding up to 80 grams of coffee in less than 30 seconds. Designed to complement any kitchen counter, the Ode Gen 2 is sleek and modern. The matte-finished body and magnetic grounds bin have metal construction. The small footprint saves space and makes it easy to store.

$350 is too expensive for such a fussy product

I have to clear the chute with the provided brush every few days because roughly 0.1 grounds get stuck within the chute per dose. Shoving the brush up into the chute to clean will unclog all the retained grounds from the days before. Could be 1-2 grams worth depending on how much you're grinding and how much you're drinking daily. For this price tag I'm disappointed that I have to not only do the RDT method on my beans every time I grind but I have to run the grinder then add the beans slowly to reduce the clogging. This price tag comes with some headaches that ultimately make it disappointing. Also the rubber lid on the catch can is totally useless and just serves to clog the chute more. I've ditched the lid at this point.

I watched a lot of videos and read a lot of reviews before purchasing so was aware of minor issues/annoyances. It is well made, very sturdy. Issues are as most others have noted-- beans have jammed, but easily cleared by following instructions; do not like the wings on the grinds cup as they don't really work as designed, should just remove them; do not the placement of the on/off button, as it is easily inadvertently turned on in current location (should be on side or top); and agree on the too large plug, should have flat space-saver plug similar to the Moccamaster. Disappointed in noise and quality control
30 May 2024

This machine is advertised as being quiet and consistent. Our experience is anything but that. We purchased our grinder from Crate and Barrel. It was louder than the 10 year-old Capresso burr grinder that it replaced. It was loud while grinding the coffee, and also made an annoying noise that sounded like a chirping bird after it finished grinding the beans. The grind setting guide included with the machine suggests nothing more coarse than a setting of 8 for pour over, but we had to set it to 9 to achieve a grind that was appropriate for pour-over.After complaining to customer service about the noise issues, they grudgingly agreed to send a replacement under warranty. The replacement machine is louder when grinding, and makes a louder "chirping bird" sound after it finishes grinding. The only upside is that the replacement does seem to actually grind the coffee in a manner that is consistent with their included instructions. A setting of 7 on the new machine is finer than the 9 on the original machine, and perfect for Hario V60 pour-over with the beans that we buy roasted locally.I admire what Fellow is trying to achieve with their ambitious products, but quality control seems to be a serious issue, and their claims of quiet performance don't match the reality of the user's experience. I don't feel like we really got any significant upgrade for the ~$345 we spent on this over our old ~$100 Capresso machine.A lot of other reviewers seem happy with this machine, so perhaps we just had a "lemon" experience, but it seemed like it was worth sharing.

I wanted to love it but…
22 February 2024

I was excited to get the Ode Gen 2, however, i’m very disappointed with it. At first I set it for Aeropress and the grind was just ok (my Porlex mini hand grinder is better IMO). The Ode Gen 2 produces way too many fines, and the resulting coffee always has a bitter aftertaste. The grind set for French Press and even Cold Brew is too fine as well, and also results in a less-than-satisfying cup. I know it’s not the coffee beans, as coffee ground in the Porlex Mini and brewed in an Aeropress is delicious. I also recently purchased a Fellow XL pour over and a Stagg EKG Pro Studio Edition electric kettle. I wish I hadn’t bought those as well as the Ode Gen 2. I didn’t bother to plug that in to try it because it didn’t sit flat on the countertop. Oh, Fellow Drops— too pricey but weird tasting coffee for my taste. By the way, I asked to receive the difference in price between the Stagg EKG Pro Studio Edition and a plain Stagg electric kettle (not the Stagg EKG Pro. Sorry Fellow, I wanted to love these, but they’re not quite ready for prime time IMO. Thank you for your consideration.

I'm a Gen 1 and Gen 2 customer - BAD Grinder!
23 May 2024

I really wanted to love this grinder. I even splurged for Gen 2 to replace my Gen 1 grinder in the hopes they fixed the issues. Here are the problems reported by many customers like myself:1. The grinder clogs all the time. I use medium to medium/dark roast.Response from customer support: "When using dark roast beans, it's important to note that their lower density and the presence of oils can sometimes cause clogging, especially when grinding at a coarse setting for French press. To mitigate this, I would recommend breaking up your batch into smaller portions, around 15 to 30 grams at a time. This should be done using automatic Grindz tablets that way you do not have to open up the grinder so often."So they suggest I stand there and "Gently tap" the grinder all the time? And feed it only 15-30 g of coffee at a time? Please!2. Hopper does not feed well. You will have to baby sit this grinder to make sure all the beans feed in to the grinder.3. Anti-static device works poorly. You will have a mess if you rely solely on the anti-static device. Plus the grind chute will clog as well. You still need to use water droplet technique.

Nearly Perfect

The Gen 2 version of the Ode grinder is an excellent grinder with only a couple of nits to detract from "perfect." Its compact size, build quality, user interface, ease of cleaning, and grind quality are all topnotch. I also really appreciate its auto-off feature when finished grinding. If I were to deduct any points it would be for the catch cup. The cup is metal, which is nice, but there are two "fins" inside that are supposed to help with dispensing the grinds, but tend to catch grounds behind them and make washing and drying the cup less than straightforward. As mentioned, everything about this grinder's build quality is excellent, except for the catch cup's lid. Its made of plastic and fits very loosely on the cup. Overall though, the best grinder I've found for non-expresso coffee.

Quiet, consistent, and nice looking grinder. Downfall of retention and messiness

Bought this grinder four months ago. A lot of features I like are the design, catch cup magnet, size of the hopper, and how quiet it is. It also has a consistency in grind size. This amount of retention is also after I close the hopper lid multiple times like a bellow, tap on the side to knock grounds loose, and use the knocker. I reached out to Fellow, as I thought maybe there was an issue with the components. Maybe the ionizer. I received little to no help as they said, "This overall looks like it is within the standard bounds of retention you may expect." According to the product features this grinder has low retention and is mess free. Not the case. My Baratza Encore wasn't this messy, nor did it have anywhere near this amount of retention. From reading and posting online, it seems this isn't a common issue. Some in the same boat as me. Overall, disappointed in the two issues I have, as well as Fellow support. I'm sure their other products are great, but at this time I don't see myself purchasing anything else if this is how the support team responds to an issue. Picture for reference is a couple days after cleaning the grinder. Moved the catch cup and that was the result.

Quite Pleased So Far
27 December 2022

I thought I would share a bit about my buying decision here. I’ve been using a Comadante C40 v.3 as my primary pour over grinder for the last couple of years. I’ve always quite happy with its performance for use in my chemex/v 60 (preferring it for pour over, over my Kinu Classic M47 which I use for espresso only). However, there have been one or two things that irritated me about the Comadante (a) I really don’t love changing the settings across brew methods- the click system is less than ideal in my view- I was not able to quickly switch to other brew methods and then switch back; and (b) it took me too long to manually grind out coffee when I need coffee for more than a couple of people (when it was just me it was just fine). Of course, I wanted to try different grinders/profiles out of curiosity as well (flat burrs ideally) . So an electric grinder made sense- but I was looking for something that would not compromise in the cup- would be good for single dosing (I tend to use a variety of coffees and mostly lighter roast coffees) with perhaps a bit more clarity- and allow me to switch brew methods a bit more easily. So I had been considering alternatives for quite a while and finally settled on the Ode v. 2 with the v.2 burrs. So far, I can say the following: v.2 of this grinder has really addressed a lot of the issues that made me stay away from v.1 (I just didn’t want to be irritated) - I find it to not be messy at all- with very little retention- and I don’t have issues with the hopper- the beans do not get stuck- really this has been a joy to use operationally. Fast- reasonably quiet- and neat- build quality seems fine- better than I was expecting. On the burrs- I had had my eye set on SSP Multipurpose burrs - but thought I would give these a go based upon the positive reviews and the purported similarities. So far, I am really quite happy. I’m getting to know the burrs still - but so far, I’ve noticed somewhat more clarity than with the Comadante (I’ve not tried back to back comparisons thus far though I think that is something I will try soon). Lots of room to grind finer- I am finding myself using setting 5 for v 60 for 30g. Though it is stepped- I don’t think presently that it will be a problem. The only method other than v60 that I’ve tried with this grinder thus far has been cold brew - it worked great for that (at setting 10)- a few other methods to try out with this still (I’ll try Aeropress next given how much room I seem to have to fine tune). I did consider lots of other grinders-- Lagom has some interesting offerings that I also considered (and I picked one up for espresso) but happy with this so far. I may at some point pick up some SSP MP burrs- but not sure that given the results I’m getting that I will go there. And great tthanks to the great team at Cafune- as always helpful/very responsive to questions- and everything is packaged with care and shipped quickly.

Worth Every Penny

I have been steadily upping my pour-over coffee game over the years and decided it was finally time to upgrade my Encore Barratza grinder. I don't have an espresso machine at home so I was looking for a grinder specifically for pour overs and French Presses. After watching about 800 YouTube reviews and demos, I went with the Ode Gen 2 and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I wanted something that would be easy for myself (or guests) to use but that would also allow me to fine tune the settings. I love how easy the graphic is to follow on the inside of the lid, I love how the grinder shuts off as soon as it is done, I love how I have been using the grinder for a month now and have not noticed a single errant grind when I remove the catch cup (I use the knocker ... MoreI have been steadily upping my pour-over coffee game over the years and decided it was finally time to upgrade my Encore Barratza grinder. I love how easy the graphic is to follow on the inside of the lid, I love how the grinder shuts off as soon as it is done, I love how I have been using the grinder for a month now and have not noticed a single errant grind when I remove the catch cup (I use the knocker about 3-4 times), and most of all, I love the taste of my coffee. I also primarily use the Fellow Stag XF pour over dripper, but I will mix that up now and again with a French press or the Hario Switch and the coffee is always fantastic. I like to think I have a discerning palate and I like to play around with emphasizing different flavors and tasting notes, but I am no James Hoffmann and I didn't want to spend more than $400 on a grinder.People online have very strong opinions about the metal wings in the catch cup and I thought they would bother me more than they do. The whole machine is so easy to use and the silhouette is perfect on my counter top so I would recommend it to anyone who drinks exclusively non-espresso coffee drinks at home.
