Since I could not overcome my coffee addiction by trying to go cold turkey for 2 mos., I landed on half caff, which led to researching grinders that would accommodate the single cup (I bought a Technovorm CupOne). In my experience the products works well on the coarser grinds for aeropress and pourovers and is certainly an upgrade from my old hand grinder. Consistency is very good. The machine is relatively quiet. Retention is a bit higher than I expected but not a big issue as it gets used daily. I had one issue where I almost filled the hopper and set to grind for 2 mins which filled the collection bin and backed up into the grinder. I can hardly tell a difference between 9 & 11. I talked to customer support about this issue and they ultimately sent a new grinder. The replacement started out better but quickly tightened up with use (I assume the burrs wore in) and is now just like the first one. Since they were both the same it must be inherent in the design. Retention not as much in medium dark roast for espresso grind setting. Either way, I do wish it was less, but it is not a complaint. The gap between the chute and the collection cup does seem noticeably tighter with the larger dose cap — maybe from all the tapping and bellowing (?).I have the Barratza Encore (not ESP) and the Opus is super quiet compared to that. I have only used it for medium and course grinds with light and dark roasted beans, and those seem pretty consistent. There are some fines but I don’t have a way to measure them. I really like that the lid of the grinder has two sections that help you measure your beans. I think it’s supposed to be like 20g/40g. It’s a nice approximation and I do find it helpful. Also really like the printed grind size chart inside the lid.No matter what my morning is like, I can easily adjust my grind setting, pour some beans in, press a button, and have a perfect cup. Unquestionably superior to your everyday blade grinder and much simpler than a manual burr grinder. It’s pricy but worth it if you are a regular drinker and enjoy the coffee making process.Two features I wish the Opus had:I wish there was the thing to flick the rest of the grinds at the end like there is on the Ode. I give it a few light taps when the grinding stops and that helps a bit but there are still always grounds to be brushed away. I purchased the black machine for this reason after reading reviews about the same thing,so it doesn’t bother me as much. Definitely something to keep in mind for those of you wanting white machines!I also would’ve appreciated an auto stop feature on the grinder when there aren’t more beans. You can press the button when it’s done to get it to stop earlier than the 30, 60 second timers.
