An updated version of the legendary amplifier that's been the heart of many guitarists' rigs, the Hot Rod Deluxe IV features modified preamp circuitry, smoother-sounding spring reverb and updated aesthetics that any player is sure to appreciate. The updated aesthetics include a lightweight pine cabinet, improved control panel texture and graphics, ivory pointer knobs, steel-reinforced strap handle and lightly-aged silver grille cloth, giving it the unmistakable look and vibe you can only get from a Fender amp. I traded a Supersonic 22W combo to help pay for this and although I loved the burn channel on the SS I never liked the clean, fat or not. I'll be writing a second review on the Fender Pugilist distortion after finishing this one but that pedal gave me the same satisfying burn through the front of this new Deluxe so I won't miss the SS quite as much. The clean on this is pristine and can get loud and room shaking beyond what I would ever need but it sounds great on lower volume settings too.I can't imagine that if you are even considering this amp and are at all familiar with Fender history and legacy that you would be disappointed.

I also value pristine clean tones with just enough overdrive when necessary. My two go-to guitars are an American Standard Strat as well as an SG that has Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P-90 style humbuckers. This amp delivers on everything I wanted. It actually is making me appreciate these guitars even more. If the sound bites a little too much, it's easy to bring down the presence without worrying about adjusting the tone. I keep trying different guitar combos or head plus cabinet, but always come back to one of these. In A/B tests, this always sounds better than the amp I am comparing it with, deeper sound and enough oomph for live use on stage. It takes pedals well (I use a Boss multiple effects unit) and the footswitchable channel/more drive is great for live work. I don't use the effect loop for that purpose, I just use the SEND into a DI box for sound reinforcement through the PA. However, all Fender valve amps are poor value for money at new prices. Find yourself a decent secondhand one and save yourself hundreds.

This has to be one of the best stamps I've ever had with the exception of one little hiccup. This is replacing a Fender Blues Deville, which I absolutely loved. I had access to almost every Fender amp when I bought my Blues Deville and it just spoke to me. Well, they don't make Blues Devilles anymore, and I knew the Hot Rod Deville existed, so I went for it. To my ears, it's the same as my previous amp. This is a two channel amp in which each channel is independent of the other with the exception of the tone knobs, which are the same for both channels, which is not a problem for me. When I plugged it in, I couldn't believe how incredible it sounded clean. It absolutely blew my mind. I used both a Stratocaster and a Les Paul. Then, I took the second channel and add a little bit of gain to it, which distorted it. The distortion on this amp is so creamy that I don't even need to use my TS9. It has to be one of the best distortions I have ever heard from an amplifier. I usually use an Orange TH30C for my distortion. My Fender amp was always a clean amplifier. I may be using this one for the distortion and my Orange may get sidelined. The reason I'm giving this amp four stars is because of the following; when you go to switch channels using the included foot switch, there's a loud pop that happens every time you switch channels while you're playing. Apparently, it's inherent to the amplifier. It's the only reason I cannot use this amplifier with clean and dirty at the same time unless I use a TS9 on the clean channel. That really was not a well thought out process from Fender. For the price of this amp, I would think that problem would've been fixed, but it is what it is. I still love the amplifier and I'm still glad I bought it, although I will have to use my Orange when I want a distorted sound.

Great little amp

Down sized from a Mesa Boogie to the Fender and while very different it is an excellent amplifier. Greater portability, plenty loud enough but volume control is greatly improved by swapping the first stage preamp valve to an ECC81. Normal signs of pcb scorching, but repositioning of the effected components to give greater airflow has sorted that design issue. From a technical point of view, the Fender is easy to work on, well laid out internal give easy access to all the main parts. One tip, when removing the back cover, slacken the side chassis screws to stop the sides of the cabinet gripping the back panel. If you force it too much the panel will break.

Bought this in Feb. of 2022. Worked well for a couple of gigs then the more drive function stopped working. Quite honestly, I never used the More Drive all that much, so it wasn't a huge deal, But I always believe that when you pay for something it should work as advertised. I also looked up on this here interweb and saw channel switching issues are not uncommon. Some repairs are given but I do not have the expertise to mess with a circuit board. LOUD! Very LOUD!
17 May 2021

I was warned before I bought this that it was loud and they weren't wrong. I can barely play it at the house above two without using an attenuator. However, this thing sounds great both clean and dirty. It takes pedals well and the effects loop is a must. I don't use the built in drive much, but it works well and has some great options. The reverb sounds good to me, but I've heard other people complain about the onboard spring reverb of this amp. It's tough to beat the sound of a warm, clean Fender amp with a good guitar. If you want it for home use, look into getting some sort of volume control or attenuator so you can crank the onboard volume up and get the full use of the tubes and dial it down a bit with the volume/attenuator control. I also have a Boss Katana 100 watt and while that's fun for experimenting with different sounds and tones, when I just want to plug in and go all out with some pedals, this does the job...and the 40 watts of tube power are louder than the 100 watt Boss.

Monster Fender Cleans

This thing is a beast. I've always heard how massive it sounds, but it wasn't until I pulled it out of the box that I realized how big it was. It makes the rest of my amps look tiny. It's dead clean too, and works great as a pedal platform. It's got some amazing headroom, so you can stay as clean as you'd like, but still get some volume. The drive channel is pretty sweet too, and can be dialed into a girthier clean tone. It's hard to beat the reverb when it comes to Fender amps, and the amp cover is a higher quality version than the smaller Hot Rod models. All in all, if you're wanting a clean amp with some hefty volume, look no further.

I was torn between the blues deluxe and the HRD IV and I am glad I chose what I did. The amp has a large range of choices in tone adjustment, and I am very happy with the way it accepts pedals. I am an experienced stage musician, this amp covers all the basses. It can be kind of loud and I rarely go past 3 on the volume. I look for a great clean tone first and do all my dirty work at the pedal board. I do not care much for the overdrive side of the amp. My one significant issue is that after 17 months of hard use the amp died, thank goodness for purchasing the insurance which was about to expire. I was not at all happy with the way the store backed up the insurance making me feel like I was the bad guy. It has been in the shop almost four weeks and the tech told me that there were many more issues with the amp than the one I brought it in for. I was told at the store because of inflation I could not get a one for one exchange as I had been promised and would have to pay an additional $235 to get a replacement off the shelf with a warranty. I hesitate to recommend this amp because what if it had died at a gig which it almost did. Glad I have a back up solid state amp that I used for the next few shows. Except for the reliability issue it is a great amp with great sound.

Honestly, this amp is absolutely killer. It has such nice, lush clean tones. It's not hard to dial in a tone you'll love. I've been able to easily get convincing Hendrix-y and Mayer-y tones from it. It's seems they've fixed the volume jump issue as well which is a big plus! It's rated at 40-watts and stays decently clean up until around 8 on the volume (it goes to 12 which is like... 1 more than 11?). After that you get a bit of breakup. It's been able to stay clean with a rather hard-hitting drummer which is exactly what I needed. As a pedal platform, this is easily one of the best, if not the best, amps out there. It eats up any pedal you could possibly throw at it. I'm currently using it with a EQD Plumes, Phase 95, SL Drive, JHS modded Rat, Pugilist, Compressor ... MoreHonestly, this amp is absolutely killer. I'm currently using it with a EQD Plumes, Phase 95, SL Drive, JHS modded Rat, Pugilist, Compressor Plus, and a Polara. No issues with any pedal.Volume-wise - it can get quiet enough to play at home/bedroom levels without any issues. Use input 2 for a -6dB pad and run your volume at around 2 and that's perfect for low-level playing. The A-Type speaker compliments the amp really well. It's not my favorite speaker and I will end up going with a creamback (currently have a V-Type in there which is quite nice) but as far as stock speaker go, there is really no reason to change it unless there is something specific that you are looking for. It has a good bottom end. Nice low mids and crystal clear highs.Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend this amp to anyone. If you are a gigging musician that enjoys using pedals to color your tone, this is the amp you want. If you are a bedroom/home player that wants nice, low-volume tone, this is the amp you want. It's hard to get a sound that you won't like. If you're in the market for a new amp I would highly suggest trying this out!
