You just can not trust modern-day Square Enix. I knew that going in, but as a fan of the original, I wanted to believe they would do better for this. What you get is unbelievably cringy dialogue (lookup crybaby Ned), plastic looking people who like FF15 npc's look out of place, acting and dialog straight out of an anime for kids and combat that has the enemies way too spongey. Somebody tell modern Japanese game devs that sharp things like swords cut and aren't weak blunt objects. This game is unbearable, filled with filler content and unnecessary quick time events or things like taking way too long to turn valves or just miserable and poorly made stealth parts.

The amount of effort that Square Enix have put into this game it really shows. They went to great care with the smallest of details, and the end result is fantastic. The detailed environments really show this. The whole production feels great. The voice acting is fantastic (and there's plenty of it), graphics are very good. The visuals and audio are excellent, they do a great job of really capturing the moment. The battle system is action-based and fluid. Even if you're not a RPG fan, I think you'd find it quite free-flowing. It's engaging. I would call the game genre-defining. Such a strong commendation might put people off, but I'd recommend you try it out.

Ok, I played the original one and was blown away 20 years ago. I was hesitating to buy this because 1) I know the story already. Why play this again? 2) I know this is not the full game.Well, a few months later, I bought this and FF15. Sleepwalk thru FF15 and did not like it. Then, I decide to play this one. I was not disappointed.Graphic : Man, I was blown away by the graphic 20 years ago and I thought no one can come close to give me that feeling again. Nowadays, everyone with money and effort can build gorgeous graphic in general, except human models. Have you seen fallout and mass effect? These are triple A franchises. Now, buy this game and look at all characters modelling. I found myself idling the game just to look at them. Now, buy this game and look at all characters modelling. I found myself idling the game just to look at them. They are even better than FF15. This is the A team in squarenix doing modelling. Also, better than FF16 by the looks of it.Story : faithful to the original story with a twist! Better story telling with the improved graphics. Certainly better than FF15.Character development : One thing that makes FF7 stand out from the rest of the FF series is character development. It looks like they put the effort into this one. As such, this story will span multiple games.Battle system : improved yet give me a hint of the original FF7. This is no cake walk. I can tell that they are expecting fans of the original FF7 to play this.Game play : It is quite linear so far. This is true of the original FF7 too. Not until later, things open up.OST : This one is tough for them. Graphics hardware might have improved a lot these 20 years. Audio gap is not as big. As such, with such a top notch masterpiece in the original FF7, how can they top that? I think it is a good adaptation but the original one still pump me up more than anything else.Voice acting/acting : 20 years ago. It was all text and polygons. This time, you can pick stuff up from the voice, the subtle facial expression.Verdict : Being a fan of the original FF7, the 8-15 FF series did not scratch the itch I have of a good game, good story, good OST and good characters. I hate to come back to an old story for that. Have you experienced mourning the end of a game because it was so good? This time, I took my time to play this and hope there will be many parts of this story.

A greatly expanded version of the first part of Final Fantasy 7. The graphics are beautiful, particularly when it comes to the city itself. The music is--which was very good in the original--is expanded upon and performed beautifully. It seems to dynamically change during scenes as well. The gameplay is the best feature. Due to weapon skills, the characters are more unique in battle compared to the original. Playing as Cloud feels completely different than playing as Barrett. The battles use a real time system that drastically slows down when you select weapons skills or magic. When the game is slowed down, you can see some breathtaking effects, bullets slowly passing, lasers devastating the field. You can freely move around the field as you attack, dodge or block. You control 1 character but you can very quickly and easily switch to either of your 2 companions in battle. You can alternatively simply select which abilities they use once they are "charged" enough. Very fun throughout. The story is mostly a faithful retelling of the original except greatly expanded. A much better script and good voice acting now accompanies it. There is 1 new character which was a let down for me. Another new addition is ghost like figures which are reminiscent of the dementors. Their contribution is the biggest change and not necessarily a good one, particularly towards the end of the game. The ending seems to go off the rails a little bit, but I can still appreciate everything else up to that point.Very satisfied with Walmart's shipping, the game arrived for release day.
I have always been a big fan of the turn based combat style that Final Fantasy X had. So I wasn't a big fan when everything was active/live and there was no time to think. FF VII has a mixture of the active time battle (ABT), but you are able to to bring the fight to a halt while picking in the commands menu (Spells, Items, Abilities). This allows me time to think during battles & keep the fluid motion of the game itself going. You can easily get 30 hours of game play in your first go around (You unlock a hard mode once you beat the game). The story line keeps you interested along with the amazing graphics you would expect from this game. The equipment & materia (magic) is very open & forgiving. I never played the original FF7 when it released, but I have fond memories of watching my dad play a lot of it. The music, the characters, the world... I really couldn't make sense of the story back then, but now we have a new, reimagining of one of the greatest impacts on gaming history: FFVII Remake! The way they have focused the story, expanded the world, and reintroduced characters or added them, is truly a testament to their passion. They've done a great job at producing a faithful yet original take that I'm sure is set to make history once again. The combat and gameplay systems are absolutely indulgent. They took all the criticisms from part 1 (FF7 Remake) and fixed pretty much all of them, then improved the things that they were already doing well. The game feels incredible to play, the character writing and story telling are top shelf. The OST (of which there are 400 new music tracks) is probably the greatest in any video game. Rebirth feels like it should cost $150, but I'm glad it doesn't because more people need to play it! For newcomers to the FF7 story, I recommend playing part 1 first which is still a very good game even today. The combat is the best I've experienced in a video game, it's the perfect marriage of turn based strategy with modern action. If you need something to help step you into the world of JRPGs I recommend this or Final Fantasy XVI.No game is perfect however, and this one does suffer from having too much additional content - not something that bothers me as it means there is plenty of stuff to keep me busy while I wait another 3 years for part 3. The main story probably takes 70 hours if you do no side content, and double that if you do. Then double again if you plan on trying to get the platinum trophy. Some of the side content is also incredibly difficult, which for me is a positive as I expect the challenge to be hightended with each new part in the trilogy.
After trying 2 sellers on eBay that both turned out to be fake, ordered from WalMart without any issue and it was delivered ahead of schedule. The game itself is excellent, it makes some definite changes from the original and is more of a reimagining but it is a lot of fun all on its own. Visuals and music are top notch, voice acting is mostly well done, battle system is action style much like the other recent FF games. I would have preferred turn-based but it still works. You can save anywhere outside battle in the game which is nice. It still has weapons, armor, and materia plus accessories to play around with. The story varies from loosely following the original to doing its own thing but it is still well done. Of course this is only Part 1 of the remake, they really shouldn't be marketing or naming it as FF7 remake, it is not the whole story by any stretch - just the Midgar portion with some extra stuff added to make it into a full playtime. The new content added is fun but I would have preferred them to just make more progress on the original content and flesh it out. Another thing to note is that the game is mostly on rails, pretty similar to FF13 in that there is definitely no open world and may be a couple sidepaths to take but you will run into invisible walls and characters telling you 'not that way!' all the time. Even with all that taken into consideration, I still find it worthy of a 5 star rating just because how well done everything else is and how it is excellent to get to play as Cloud and friends in a more modern take. The original FF7 isn't going anywhere and is still great itself, but this remake part 1 does well in making something in the same setting that is worth playing.
Everything is going fine until the end when the enemies get so relentless with their attacks you literally can't do anything. The battle system is half thrown together and is one of the worst I have seen yet. Over half of the battles have you running around in a circle for a good minute before you can even make one move. During this time you are relentlessly attacked with no possible way to block it. In the end (WHICH IS ONE OF THE WORST TWISTS EVER) the monsters are like the bosses in the end of the original but you are still the level of just leaving Midgar. Yes the game is so lame it ends with Midgar and no world at all. The battle system alone would ruin this game but the dragged out dialog and dragged out gameplay is so boring it made me almost want to just ... MoreEverything is going fine until the end when the enemies get so relentless with their attacks you literally can't do anything.
