The sun is setting upon the land of Valisthea. For centuries, people have flocked to her Mothercrystals to partake of their blessing—the abundant aether that fuels the magicks they rely upon in their everyday lives. But as the aether begins to fade and the lifeless deadlands spread ever further, so too does the struggle over the final flickers of the Mothers' light grow ever more fierce. Bloody battle rages across the realm, rival nations sending their ultimate weapons against each other: the Dominants. Men and women within whom sleep the world-shattering power of an Eikon. There are few in Valisthea whose lives have not been touched by this war for the crystals' blessing, and Clive Rosfield, firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria, is no exception. Unlike most, however, the vicissitudes of fate are to reveal to him the dark truth that lies at the heart of his world, and lead him on a mission to destroy those selfsame Mothercrystals the rest of the realm hold sacred.

The story has largely taken its queue from the darker Game of Thrones type of storytelling that has been popular lately, but it mostly pays off. Took a risk with preordering from BB...I am glad I was not burned. The game, while it does have some minor graphics issues, has been nothing short of fantastic. It is action focused and they really nailed the combat. It is fast, fluid, and engaging. It does feel too easy at times on standard, but otherwise, the need to over-level is gone. Side quests, while short, do have some meaningful impacts on the story and provide more depth for some of the NPC cast. While the story has some cliche points, it works well and creates more depth to the world.Do not go in thinking this is your old-school FF. If you are looking for that old school turn based type RPG that the FF series was so well known for you wont find that here. Though that is not a surpise after the last couple entries in the series have edged closer to the action/adventure genre. This game completly embraces a more Devil May Cry or God of War fighting system. Even adding quick time events into the mix. Another big change is the gear. Something that was huge in min/maxing your character before has become just finding materials from quests and killing monsters to craft or upgrade your existing gear. Also gone is the huge open world to explore. You have a world map you click on destinations to move from one to the next. Something that was huge in min/maxing your character before has become just finding materials from quests and killing monsters to craft or upgrade your existing gear. Also gone is the huge open world to explore. You have a world map you click on destinations to move from one to the next. Also there been a whole lot of reason to go off the very linear path searching for treasure as if you do find any it is usually just crafting items that the monsters drop. There is a skill tree that you can unlock to suit your own playstyle and items that can make the combat much easier for you if you just want to see the story play out. So all that said, you may wonder why I still scored it 4 stars. First off, it is a truely gorgeous game. Both the cutscenes and the actual gameplay. Square made the right call making this a next gen exclusive. Second, the story. It is dark high fantasy that is up there with Game of Thrones. So if you enjoyed that you will probably love it. And the voice acting is top notch, Also there is a lot of nostalgia going on here. Seeing Chocobos and Moogles and lots of returning monsters reimagined in such detail is awesome. As is tradition in FF games the music is a masterpiece. And the biggest reason is the combat just feels good. Fighting as Summons (Eikons in the game) is unique as well as each one controls differently and almost feels like its own game. I definitly recommend this game to anyone who likes story, graphics, FF lore, action adventure and are even old school RPG fans that are open minded to a new type of Final Fantasy playstyle.

I really don’t understand all the hate for this game. As a lifelong Final Fantasy fan, this is now one of my favorites in the series! Turn based FF has been long gone, there should be no surprise there about the combat system, which I personally am enjoying a lot. You can get really creative with abilities/combos that makes for a very satisfying experience. The characters are relatable and lovable, the story is written extremely well, with deep knowledge into the world and lore of FF16. The Eikon battles and soundtrack are epic! Visually gorgeous and stunning. I have not come to a part where it feels dull or boring. This game just keeps reeling me in wanting more. The Dark Horse of Final Fantasy Titles

Whether or not you've ever played a Final Fantasy title, this game is unrelated to others in the series as far as its narrative. The voice acting is superb, every character is voice acted and many will make references to your actions. The setting and scope of the world are massive, built around lore that is slowly given as you learn about it through playing as Clive the protagonist. As protagonists are concerned, Clive isn't the atypical fantasy hero out to save the world. (No spoilers) He's out to make up for a wrongdoing, but the world is filled with strife just like our protagonist.Side characters are equally fleshed out, each one having their own purpose. There are optional side quests, some of which are humorous (mostly are rather dark). The combat is more ... MoreWhether or not you've ever played a Final Fantasy title, this game is unrelated to others in the series as far as its narrative. Every boss encounter is packed to the brim with nail biting sequences.Though the change in an action based combat system and a darker storyline have generated more negative reviews, this is a game that shouldn't be missed. If you're looking for a more mature, subdued Final Fantasy, look no further. The series has finally pushed aside the glamor of light fantasy and embraced a story that is packed with emotion.

Truly a Final Fantasy Game
27 June 2023

20 hours in, it's like every hour after another is like opening a birthday present bigger than the one before. Yes, it's not the same as previous Final Fantasy but Final Fantasy has always been about trying something new, Also turn based game hasn't been part of Final Fantasy for almost 2 decades now. People might be mad about not having inclusion but there's a reason why it isn't in there. Once you are approximately 15 hours into the game, you will understand why. With the side quest, it takes time to build up. It may seem the typical fetch quest, but it does build upon it to a much bigger side story. Did I say, you can pet Torgal? Yes, you can pet Torgal.Story 9.8/10Gameplay 9.7/10

I am really enjoying this game and the quests (MSQ and Side Quests). Yes there are some quests that seem pointless or like "take this here" or "kill this for me", but i actually dont mind them since they all help tell the story about what is going on... I also dont mind the fact there is a lot of cutscenes. This, to me, is like a Final Fantasy movie. This game really isnt for small children as they did give this an M rating for a reason. I also dont mind the fact there is a lot of cutscenes. This, to me, is like a Final Fantasy movie. This game really isnt for small children as they did give this an M rating for a reason. However, the violence, blood and language and other content isn't there just for the heck of it and it does help tell the story and build the environment. The other issue some may have is that this game is a full action game. You actually have to dodge and counter. You can do combos. You main actuons are physical attack, magic attack dodge and jump. By using these buttons and directional keys you can do some crazy combos (which really only matter for arcade mode scoring).I am really enjoying this game and it is among the best i have played.
