Testing 5 cables only one positively identified. There were little instructions, no online help and zero tech support. For a meter that cost $380 I’d expect more. I never make the mistake of buying a Fluke product in the future.

Great product. Does so much more than just tone a cable. The toner can verify network connectivity. The Probe can also verify pairs are good on any cable, and more. The only down side is the documentation. Some YouTube reviews say it comes with a "How to CD" but mine did not. The same reviews do explain in better detail all the features of this toner & probe. In some cases on digital it tones so well, it picks up a tone from the adjacent port. To verify the exact port you can then plug a CAT5 cable into the back of the toner and plug the other end directly into the patch panel port. Great feature that in the past I was not even aware of.

Hi, This is the only one that I can truly say that it works on live data cable . Other fox & hound should work fine on non live data but it will not do once the cable is patched in a switch . The tone just faded away even with the Fluke pro 3000 ( analog ) , which is very good on telephone wire tracing. In my telecom tool kit, I always carry both the pro 3000 for analog and the intellitone 200 for digital/Cat5 tracing chore. The analog function in the intellitone 200 is very weak while the digital is great but slow . The wiring mapping is there, but it is so basic so I don't use it much since there are may other tools that can do a much better job . The old Microscanner or the great Linkrunner AT 200 are two of my favorite for wire mapping/fault finding thingy . I bought this as my side hustle requires me to travel to different sites for a 1-2 day office breakdown/ buildup. I saw some reviews mention the grounding issue where until you hold the tip of the wand you get the tone amplified, I am fortunate to not have had that issue. Fluke as always is a higher price, but I feel they are skimping on the quality to match. I got a lot of accessories with the bundle, the needed gator clips, probe. RJ45 and 11 and coax. Accuracy is good, helped with a mess of cables to trace and isolate a drop for a WAP. All I need now is a padded case to hold everything.
I have been using a toner for almost 20 years. I got this one a while ago. I choose it because a coworker had one. I read the directions once and I was sold. Then I got one. It has a few major features that make this toner work better than any other toner I have ever used. Read the directions and learn all of the features. It is worth the price in my opinion. It can help you troubleshoot. I use this device in major hospitals, schools, and Government buildings. It is a must have as an IT tech. It fits really well in a traditional tonner bag. Let me describe exactly what I like. It has a traditional analog tonner setting. It has the alligator clips you need. It has the multiple different tones that change when the leads are shorted out!!!! It has a digital toner ... MoreI have been using a toner for almost 20 years. I got this one a while ago. It tells you when it is plugged into a switch!! It can be used to test the RJ45 ends/patch cables. It is a simple cable tester and it works great to verify a digital tone. This tester is used in my tool bag. It can do more than two other tools that I have combined. This Fluke item is worth the cost. The extra features really help in the real word.
I use this quite often at work for tracing Ethernet wires. It is absolutely the best product for that. Wires can be found quickly and easily. Tones are distinct and accurate. I have never experienced an issue where tones are heard on a wire that didnt have the other end connected to it. In the past, I used this same toner with another of their products that was supposed to put out the same tone. It didnt work well. Tones were misinterpreted which would lead to misidentification of wires. Highly recommend buying this kit unless you already have one or the other. The only con is that it absolutely sucks at testing wire which is a shame. Ive had an issue where this toner was indicating that the line was bad. I then ran an additional line only for the toner to tell me ... MoreI use this quite often at work for tracing Ethernet wires. It is absolutely the best product for that. The only con is that it absolutely sucks at testing wire which is a shame. Ive had an issue where this toner was indicating that the line was bad. I then ran an additional line only for the toner to tell me that the new line was also bad. Confused, I test several known good lines. About half were good and the other half were bad. All of these lines worked and were terminated by a few different people. Never figured out what the issue was but I dont use that feature anymore.
I've only used this for mapping home terminated ethernet cables. This is not something I do on a regular basis, but every time it's been a maddening experience. First off, the batteries are nearly always dead. Second, somewhere in the probe there's an intermittent connection I couldn't track down - squeezing the device would make it work - but now it won't work at all. I wish I'd figured out that the device was defective on day one and returned it. There's really nothing much more frustrating than having a testing device you can't trust. In this case buying the name brand tool was money wasted.
Hands down the most useful and used tool I have, in my selection on thousands of dollars of equipment. This is my go to daily driver. Just works. And works extremely well. Had to learn to use it as a visual 1-8 strength locator vs old school audio inductive amplifier method. I.e don't locate by how loud it is. Locate by how high the lights go. Once located, I slam it to cable map to make sure I got the cable. I then listen for each pair test. Bad bong noise if crossed, split, open, or shorted. So simple. The main unit also has a simple network tester. Slam that on, and see link and activity. Let's you know if a cable is hot and working. So basic, fast and simple. If I get a bad cable I then break out the more expensive tools. But this is what I use 99% of the time. ... MoreHands down the most useful and used tool I have, in my selection on thousands of dollars of equipment. This is my go to daily driver. Just works. If I get a bad cable I then break out the more expensive tools. But this is what I use 99% of the time. The only complaint I have is, the wand plastic housing breaks when dropped a few times on hard concrete. So you treat it like a cell phone...drop it and cringe, pick it up and check if you cracked it, type thing. Wish the would make a 2.0 that is more rugged. Don't get me wrong. The wand is not crazy fragile. But I am on #3 in a 10 year span. For me it breaks the snaps on the plastic housing that keeps it held together. No longer keeping or holding the pressure down for the dial to make an electrical contact on the PCB board. In short. I'd buy a hundred of these if needed. It's the only thing out there that tones through gigabit connected switches, etc. It's basic and affordable. And does what it does extremely well. Must have IT services tool.
TLDR: Cheap construction, bad QC, eats batteries, unreliable, and expensive to top it all off. Bought this back in Jan of 2018. Worked well at first, although I was a bit surprised by the toy-like feel of the product. I've use the old-school Greenlee analogue toner often and find that it feels much better in the hand than the Fluke. They also go through 9V batteries like no other piece of equipment I own. My boss' Greenlee has had the same battery in it for over a year. Meanwhile, I've probably bought six 9V batteries for replacements since January. The wand produces a very annoying feedback squelch quite often. The tabs on both the included ethernet test cables have broken, and the coax male-end has come out. I think the wand is now dead. I can't rely on this ... MoreTLDR: Cheap construction, bad QC, eats batteries, unreliable, and expensive to top it all off. Bought this back in Jan of 2018. I can't rely on this product for professional use, and DO NOT recommend you buy it—at least until Fluke gets their quality control issues managed. I was surprised by the build and reliability of this product, given Fluke's reputation.
There are lots of cheaper toner and network testing tools on home essentials direct. I have tried a lot of them including the cheaper highly rated ones and the ones home essentials direct recommends. Don't, just don't. I have been tracing runs of 25 to 100'. Other tracers made it very difficult to find the cable - super quiet tone with lots of background noise. This tracer let's you identify the cable instantly and quickly. On top of that, you can then validate that you terminated the cable properly without connecting a separate device on the other end. If you are just tracing and terminating 5 wires, sure the cheaper solutions will work. More than that and you want this tool.
