Fluval 407 Canister Filter
External filters are an excellent option for medium and large sized aquariums. Their large size and power means they are the most suitable option for larger aquariums, or those that are heavily stocked or house messy fish which produce a lot of waste. They are also a great option for those who wish to invest a bit more in a filtration system in order to cut back on aquarium maintenance. A larger filter means larger surface area for beneficial bacteria which means more waste can be broken down. The new 07 series marks the 7th incarnation in nearly 4 decades of Fluval's top-selling canister filter family worldwide. Not only does the latest generation incorporate the power and reliability you've come to expect from the leader in aquatic filtration, but it also features several new performance upgrades that make it more robust, energy-efficient, flexible and easier to use than ever before. The 07 series is excellent for aquariums housing large and/or big groups of cichlids, carnivorous fish species, oddballs, and stingrays. The eTEC external filter features a redesigned quick primer for fast, effortless start ups and generates constant pumping power and pressure that endures over time. It is also 25% quieter than previous models thanks to the Italian precision crafted impeller assembly. The aquastop valves feature a raised lip for simplified hose disconnection and the filter is finished with single action dual locking clamps for quick motorhead attachment. The versatile media stack maximises space for flexible media configurations whilst the vertical pre-filter with new bio-foam max provides more surface area and better mechanical filtration. Finally, the easy-lift media baskets with a new central handle, provide faster media access and less mess, making maintenance a little less challenging.

Eheim or Fluval. The neverending debate. I wont settle this question. All I can tell you is the Fluval 407 is very quiet. It is easy to set up (although tubing is a bit stiff). For someone who wants inline co2 I would go for eheim as the tubing is not rippled and you wouldt have to hack your way around to install. I run it in tank so not an issue for me. It is a powerful filter and very silent. It is in my room on a 90g tank and all I can hear are the hobs running in the living room 20 feet away. Maintenance is easy and for those who might still own a 404, there are many improvements. The baskets are held by a long stick that goes trouvh them so that they can be removed all at once. Report on my Fluval, changing from Top Fin. Had to wait the month out from my Top Fin filter cleaning change. Didn't want to change the filter systems mid-month. Top Fin sits in the water, for outgoing water, so it is quiet, but you can't tell if its working. So the Fluval 407 is awesome, but its a waterfall sound effect. I just have to get used to it over time. Good for meditations. But yes, don't need the chemicals. but it came with 2 packages of Phosphate. 4 bags of Charcoal. 2 bags of tube media, and coarse filter and mild filter. I used the Coarse and lite filter bottom tray of 4. Then tube new rinsed off, media, mixed with my old tube media. 3rd try up, then 2nd tray up, I used me old really good long media, mixed a few new ones in. So yes, happy for now. 100 gal 407 filter for my 55 tank....it will be pretty clean and using Poly-Fil keeps the water clear.....Hobby Lobby $2.99 Poly-Fil, at Michael's they wanted with tax over $7. so I returned it and grabbed it at Hobby Lobby!!!

I was installing a new 75 gallon aquarium and wanted a good canister filter for my Tanganyikan tank. After much research I decided on the Fluval 407 and could not be happier. The filter has all the media set in buckets and easy to get to for changes, well constructed, and extremely quiet in operation. Putting it together was easy, just follow the instructions. It cleaned up my water by the second day of establishing the tank, and although I am still monitoring PH and ammonia/nitrates, etc. it is doing its job admirably. I would recommend this filter for anyone establishing, maintaining, or replacing a filter system for above 55 gallon tanks.

I cant say how glad I am to have purchased the Fluval 407 canister filter. I had an API canister filter for about ten years and was very happy with it, so when it was time to get a new one I bought the same API filter but after a few days the new one leaked from where the cord came out of the top housing. I returned it and purchased another one, and it also leaked from the same spot. I then bought a Sunsun HW304B canister filter with a UV light. It was heavy bulky and after 5 months I woke up to about 30 gallons of water on the floor. It was leaking from the on/off switch for the UV light. I would not ever recommend the Sunsun canisters, they are junk.I finally purchased the fluval 407 and have had it for a couple of months now. Iam very impressed with it. I would not ever recommend the Sunsun canisters, they are junk.I finally purchased the fluval 407 and have had it for a couple of months now. Iam very impressed with it. Super quiet and keeps my 65 gallon tank clean and clear. Quick and easy to clean the canister and I love the red handle that you can pull all three media trays out with. I also like how the foam filters are loaded into it. It is just so much easier to clean. I also like how the intake and out put tubes are all one piece so there is nothing at the top of the tank that can come apart and cause a leak where some other filters have clamps to attach the hoses to the plastic intake and out put pieces. Less places to possibly start leaking is always a plus when it comes to aquariums!
Avoid Marineland at all cost and get THIS, This is the one to invest in. I had the Marineland C series that just leaked on me and had it for a year and regret getting it because it is just a complete trash compared to this. The Marineland has so many issues and pumping water takes so much elbow grease that nobody really has time for. This one is just straight up easier to pump the water with just a finger or two, no elbow grease needed. Easy set up and I love that you can control the flow of water too especially if you’re feeding for weak swimmers like Musk Turtles for example. Definitely recommend this, seriously spend the EXTRA BUCK and get this one. Avoid Marineland at all cost. It’ll be worth it
We have gone through 4 307s within 1.5 years on 2 tanks (45 and 60 gallon). When working, it works great, but when 6 month/annual cleaning, the edges of the lid on filter, dark gray, Crack, break off, plastic holding handles break. This causes major leaks and makes cannister unusable. Knowing they were fragile, we had purchased our 3rd and 4th replacement and handled with extreme care, yet they too have cracked and broke I'm same areas as 1st two. So now we have one tank with no working filter, off to store to figure out our options. For the price, this should not be occurring.
This filter is really quiet. It has great output flow. The baskets inside for stacking filter media are customizable. It has 2 foam filters leading to a stack of 4 baskets. I have the black sponge and polishing pad that it came standard with in the first basket. I have Polyfil and 4 bio balls on the next level. I have the ceramic media that came with the filter mixed with Seachem Matrix Bio-Media on the next level. On the final level I have Seachem Matrix and Seachem Purigen. I am using the filter on a 55 gallon tank which is kind of over kill but after cycling my tank the water been testing well with no ammonia or nitrites. When detaching the inflow outflow tubes a little water does spill out so I recommend to bring the canister out from under your cabinet and have a towel on the floor. I would have liked the clips for the lid to feel more solid feeling but I haven't had any leaks. I highly recommend this filter. I am thinking of adding a spray bar to it so I have less current in my tank but my fish seem to be doing fine so I don't really see a reason to add it.
I replaced an old, discontinued canister filter with the Fluval 407.The Fluval is designed to make it easy to handle the various filtering media and to be able to maintain the filter with easy disconnect ports. This filter is much quieter than the previous one and is touted to be more energy efficient as well, both positive traits. One tip for the ribbed tubing: I was setting this up on a hot sunny day so I laid the tubing out in the yard while I prepared the canister, allowing the sun to warm up the tubing so it was much easier to manipulate into place. Bought this yesterday and set it up. It took me about an hour to setup, but this included removing the old filter, moving the old filter media to this one and wiping up some spillage during setup due to my own fault. The canister and the media trays inside are self explanatory. You just rinse your media, stack the trays up and put the top on and you’re done. I had a bit of hard time installing the tubing and the “rim connectors”. I did not see in the directions that you’re supposed to take this apart as there are two pieces that clamp into one but I figured it out after looking at it for awhile. The other difficulty is the tubing itself. I’m not really a fan of the ribbed tubing. Too hard to move it around and make it go the direction you want it to go. The other difficulty is the tubing itself. I’m not really a fan of the ribbed tubing. Too hard to move it around and make it go the direction you want it to go. I just prefer the traditional smooth PVC tubing as it’s much easier to maneuver. Having to twist it into place, holding it in position after I got it to where and how I wanted it to be, then get the clamp and clamp it down onto the the rim connector without letting go of what I already done as so annoying. I hated that part of the installation. And why do they have a black tubing which I really like with an almost white connector? Anyway, after all was setup and I turned it on, I really like it a lot. It’s quiet, and the flow adjuster is great. The priming handle was easy to use. I only pumped it once and he water started to fill in the canister. I can tell that maintenance it’s going to be easy as all you have to do is stop the water flow, pull out the AquaStop and you can take the canister away. the 4 media trays are big so I can put a lot of media of my choice. Overall I’m very happy so far.
Changed from 2 Aqueon Quiet flow 75 gallon filters on a 75 gallon Cichlid tank. The Fluval 407 frees up a lot of room inside the aquarium. Only an intake and discharge hose inside aquarium. The Fluval pump is silent!! No rattling and vibrating lids like the Aqueon pumps. No more very expensive filters that the Aqueon uses. I do replace replace small and inexpensive filters in the Fluval but not nearly as often. The Fluval is such a better, more quiet filter system with far less upkeep requirements
