This is a really great product!! All aquarium owners should own one. It's extremely easy to use and a very effective gravel cleaner. Also works well as for pumping water out of your aquarium for water changes. (In case anyone is wondering its 8.5W of power isn't enough to pump water from floor level back into the aquarium....but I didn't purchase it for that purpose). I was curious as to whether is could so I had to try it. The filters can be squeezed clean under a running tap and used again and again. Before the debris reaches the main filter element in the Provac there is a plastic slotted cone shaped filter. The larger lumps of debris collect on this. When the 'on/off' button is switched to the 'off' position during operation the large lumps immediately drop off ... MoreThis is a really great product!! All aquarium owners should own one. To overcome this I place a fine mesh net under this gravel cleaner when switching it 'off', to collect that final small amount of debris.

Based on my experience: POSITIVE 1. Ergonomic Design 2. Return water doesn’t shoot all over, trickles down 3. Filter access is easy and convenient 4. Filter appears good quality and ‘reusable’ a few times if washed properly 5. LED light is fun 6. Plug-In power with long cord is nice NEGATIVE 1. Power button was a good thought for simplicity, but simply doesn’t work well enough from a UX perspective. 2 power settings and 1 off, with ‘pause’ feature. More times than not, I kept switching between power settings and off, needing to constantly cycle repeatedly. 2. Suction is VERY poor. A. Under standard setup, it was very difficult to effectively clean my gravel. Under standard setup, it was very difficult to effectively clean my gravel. Limited suction available required to bury the nozzle as far as possible into the substrate.......still limited in suction. B. Utilizing the adapter for ‘drain’ or ‘water change’ further reduced suction and performance. C. Taping the seam between the nozzle and power head noted no improvement 3. Nozzles are too large and bulky. Previous substrate vac’s allowed corner cleaning and ease of access to all portions of the tank w/o removing the entire top. Device required complete top removal to access certain areas around features. Included angle nozzle attachment noted no benefit. RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Power Button.....Should be changed to a slider or dial. Pause feature is still a helpful idea 2. Suction........Impeller appears poor in design, contributing to poor performance. Not enough ‘blade’ surface area to effectively create vacuum. Impeller appears 90% body, 10% blade 3. Adapter.....Should #2 become improved, this becomes moot. However; suction and flow were greatly reduced using this feature. 4. Additionally.....for the price, a .30c hose should be included as most pet stores may not carry the correct dia hose, thus requiring a trip to home improvement store. From a marketing perspective, kind-of a poor though to leave out.

More suction and stronger impeller than my other German branded battery-powered vac but this means it takes quite a bit of my sand. I can collect it from the filter trap in the device so no real harm done. Light seems a waste as aquarium lights are much brighter anyway.

I am very happy with the Fluval ProVac Powered Aquarium Gravel Cleaner. It is just thing for daily use in between water changes to get rid of any unwanted waste at the bottom of the tank. Easy to use and set up and clean. Has enough power for that bottom tank vaccum when required. Highly recommend it.
This gravel cleaner helps me with cleaning my aquarium big time. It's not ideal in some ways, but does the job better than a manual gravel cleaner I used to use. The main reason for buying this gravel cleaner was that it cleans without taking water out of the fish tank. The actual gravel cleaning does take some time with any gravel cleaner, so with my manual one to somehow clean the gravel I would take out about the half of water from the tank. With this one - none. I change some water as necessary, but can clean gravel at any time regardless of that. Worth the money, hope it will last. Suction power could be a bit better though.
If you were thinking of getting an Aquavac, or an Eheim Quick Vac, or a kollercraft. But you can't decide because of mixed reviews online. Then you find this and there are none. Well, I've used the kollercraft, and Ive seen the other two going. This is by far the most superior cleaner available. It is NOT lacking in suction, in fact, I found myself using it on the low setting. The filter pads are stupid expensive at $2.50 per pad at best, however, dual density filter fiber is dirt cheap, and if your patient enough for DIY cutting and fitting, it works perfectly. I imagine there's any number of other filter materials you could stuff in the cartridge and have it work. The cord is 12' long so outlet placement should never be a problem. I've completely submerged it in my 60 gallon hex, and used it in my wife's extremely shallow beta tank, phenomenal in both... If you don't have a gravel cleaner and you can afford this one, buy it. If you can't afford it, I'd say get the Kollercraft, it is the best performing battery operated unit. But the Fluval ProVac is definitely the best in it's class or any other.
I have a 20 gallon tank and this is the first tank I’ve taken care of all on my own. My water is great my fish are still alive (and had babies!) but my gravel has never been cleaned. I bought the vacuum today and I don’t hate it. The suction for me isn’t as bad as many people have been saying. You just have to go slow with it. My only issue with the product is that once it’s pretty full (even after I rinse it out) it tends to spit back some of the gunk. But keep in mind that my gravel was pretty yucky. If you have the patience and time then definitely get it, it only comes with one filter though so I suggest buying more just in case. I also use Aqueon water clarifier and it works wonders!
It works very well. This will save me hours of time siphoning into a tub and bucketing the water back into the tank. Because it is so easy I will clean the gravel more regulalrly so better for the fish. I was sceptical but the reviews were good & I trust Fluval so bought the gravel hoover & I am not disapointed. It does look and feel a bit plasticy but it is powerful enough to clean the surface of the gravel and the filter is easy to clean afterwards but a bit fiddly to re assemble.
After reading some reviews, I thought I would go ahead and give this product a chance, I truly wish I hadn’t wasted my time nor my money. The water seems to go right up and through making my aquarium, extremely cloudy and murky. I don’t really notice that it sucks much up. There is some that goes up into it but it doesn’t clean enough that I was really excited about it. The worst of all is it seems that somehow water gets everywhere. I don’t know exactly how this is but when you take the product out it just seems to leak water to the point that I had to start making sure I had an extra bucket and a towel nearby. Maybe it would be better if this product didn’t have a power cord as it seems to get in the way quite a bit . in addition this machine is quite loud as ... MoreAfter reading some reviews, I thought I would go ahead and give this product a chance, I truly wish I hadn’t wasted my time nor my money. Having read all the reviews I knew there was criticism of the build which proved to be true. As a gravel cleaner it is powerful and better than cheaper battery powered models, yet it needs improvement. Given its power the cartridge fills and blocks quickly, with water spraying out of the top (quite a surprise). An alternative by-pass should be possible. Fluval also need to develop a means of catching the larger crap that gets dragged up - I used a net to hoist it out when the cleaner is turned off - but there should be a built in remedy. The LED seems pretty pointless and I found it impossible to distinguish between the 2 speed settiungs. At this price a spare cartridge and some liners would also have been useful. l doubt I will be buying any Fluval liners as they ... MoreHaving read all the reviews I knew there was criticism of the build which proved to be true.
