Fox Ranger Lite Shorts Black - 38

(146 reviews)

The Fox Racing Ranger Lite are lightweight MTB shorts for men, which guarantee summer mountain bike fun. These short mountain bike shorts are made of stretch ripstop fabric. This material is highly elastic and maximises performance during every ride on the mountain bike. In addition, the Ranger Lite has been given a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish. This sheds moisture, dirt and debris from these MTB shorts. DWR certainly does not stand for 'waterproof', which means that water is simply let through during a good rainstorm. Thanks to the baggy fit, these MTB trousers do not only deliver performance on the mountain bike, but you can also walk around in them in style off the bike. The Fox Racing Ranger Lite comes with a removable liner with chamois. This is a 2-layer chamois, which improves saddle comfort. The waistband is lined with TruDri material, which wicks sweat and moisture away from the body. This keeps you dry and comfortable during mountain biking. The snap front closure and adjustable side strap allow you to adjust the fit.

Decent riding shorts. Unfortunate 'updates'...

Having bought my first pair of Ranger shorts in 2014, of which are finally showing signs of needing replacement (fabric is becoming threadbare in the area where the saddle makes contact). The shorts from 2014 had a zippered cargo pocket AND a cargo pocket secured by velcro, as well as two hand pockets. This new style of Ranger seems to be ok. Down to one zippered pocket and two hand pockets. Comfortable to wear, and sizing matches the last pair I owned. The adjustment straps are shoddy at best. The OG chamois that was included on the 2014 set was LEAGUES better than this new EVO chamois that is included. Some unfortunate 'updates' from previous versions.

The short is okay. There is no zipper on the short seems like a weird thing to do. Cut cost? Reduce weight? (would rather have a zipper over less weight). Due to not having a zipper there is no support for the snap if there is any side force applied, while trying to reach into pocket with gloves on you run the risk of popping the snap that keeps the shorts together.Had a few times where I tried to grab my phone out while riding and the snap came apart and I had to stop to redo them. It's also weird that the zipper area is just a gap when I am chilling on the bike. I almost want to just have a zipper installed The waist adjustment is also minimal, I wear 32's, bought 32s and they are still slightly large at the smallest adjustment. The Fox shorts and shammy is nice, but they don't stand up to the wear and tear. I've been using them for 3 months and the inner short is starting to fall apart since the stitching is coming out. I also don't like how the bottom of the shorts will slide up my leg. A pair from another brand I had incorporated a sort of rubber that would grip my skin and prevent the bottoms of the leg from sliding up. I've been using my walmart pair for years and they are still standing strong. The Fox pair don't feel like they are made from an as high grade of material as they should be. I'm honestly very disappointed.

No adjustability.
4 October 2022

The shorts are fine. Decent quality fabrics with a decent basic liner. However, the waist has no adjustability and no belt loops. This makes them less than ideal for real riding unless they fit perfectly. For me I need a 34 to fit my quads but runs a touch loose on the waist. But they will slide down and when moving and sweating it just gets worse. I didn't cut the liner from the shorts so that they will hold up the outer. I'd reccomend not buying these unless you can try them on first. The ranger short is way better for this, while the ranger light take a a litter cheaper but far less usable.

Not for those of us with a Curvy Figure
9 June 2021

I bought these in black, size medium. I am 5'8", 140 lbs, 29" waist, 39" hips, 22" thighs.I received these shorts really fast. One of the selling features was that they came with a chamois liner. I was happy with the feel of the fabric. It is quite light and the shell appears fairly well made. The first thing I did not like was the liner is attached by two narrow ribbons that have a graphic of scissors and words indicating to cut. I did not want to cut this until I had tried them on. I found it awkward trying to squeeze my way into the liner and shorts at the same time. I would have preferred to be able to pull on the liner shorts first and then the outer shorts. I did not want to cut the ribbons or this would surely have voided any return options.Once on, the ... MoreI bought these in black, size medium. I would have preferred to be able to pull on the liner shorts first and then the outer shorts. I did not want to cut the ribbons or this would surely have voided any return options.Once on, the liner shorts fit quite well. The waist on the outer shorts gapped hugely while the hips fit well. This is a constant issue for me as I have a curvy figure. I have Fox defender pants in medium and they fit well. The shorts do have an adjustable waist.... I wish the cinching method would have been visible on the photographs like they are for most other brands. The description calls it a goggle type strap. I call it an inefficient pain in butt to adjust. There's is a slider buckle on each side that fall to the back of each side of the waist and pretty much out of view. I found this really awkward to try to adjust... it just didn't work for me. I ended up taking the shorts off and shortening the straps to make the waist smaller. What this did was make an unsightly bunching of material at the back of my waist and also made it extremely difficult to wrangle my way back into the shorts... again because of the sewn in tabs that have to be cut later, and the fact I have larger hips .The shorts really seem nice, but they just don't work for my figure so they are going back. I docked stars for the cheesy adjusting straps and the inconvenient ribbons that attach to the liner.

Only one fault and they still deserve 5stars

5’4, 125lbs, pant size is typically a 27/2-4/S.I am on the small side of adult females, but I definitely have muscle and fat on my lower half…the Small fits perfect. I found no movement restrictive, never caught onto anything. However, I have an iPhone 11max pro with a Defender-otter box case that did not fit in the pocket. Which didn’t bother me much when I opted to slide it half way in the backside of my waste line…problem solved?!!!:)Love the black, especially because my bike is so bright, but I would definitely like to see more options for women soon!!!Notice the smile on my face and the fact that I am standing on top of my toilet, I was so excited about how well my new purchase fit.Recommended, for sure!!

Poorly designed waste closure!
17 August 2022

I don’t think anyone ever wore these when they designed them before they decided to sell it. The only thing holding them closed around the waste is a small, light snap button. This thing pops open all the time allowing your shirts to fall off completely. There is no zipper on the fly below the button. So when it is actually buttoned and you sit down the fly area folds and pushes up and looks like it’s wide open.Worst biking shorts I’ve honestly ever owned. I would recommend staying far away from these things.

Sizing...
26 August 2022

I ordered a medium because I was worried the liner would be too tight otherwise and I saw at least one review about that specifically. The medium liner fits me really well, and then the short is huge. And the waist adjustment is a joke. First of all, there isn't much room to tighten them AND they don't stay tight anyways. Fox needs to re-do that design because that just sucks. I am going to return the mediums and try the smalls and hopefully the shorts AND liner fit well. I'll report back.

The classic MTB shorts
14 September 2022

This was my second pair of Ranger Lite Shorts because I love them so much. I was initially a bit worried about the lack of zippered pockets for things like keys and phones, but the pockets are nice and deep, and everything stays where it should. The liner is nice and comfortable, and I like being able to just change out of my liner into boxers and then wearing the shorts if I'm going to grab a bite to eat after a ride or something.Fit is spot on, colors are good, durability is good. Great shorts overall.

Overall I really like these pants, they are the perfect weight for the PNW mid fall - early spring. Very comfortable to ride in, they are not water proof, but shed water and muck better than expected. This is more personal than product - I am at the lager end of the 36 size range, and these go on a bit tight in the legs, then relax after a short time. This also means the adjustable waist loosens too, leaving me with pants that tend to ride VERY low. Not Plummers crack low but low. I tried these in a 38 and they fell off my hips! The side zip pocked could be a little larger, but a standard phone fits without impacting the ride. The two hand pocket are deep, but not cavernous. The bottom cuffs fit nicely and do their job well.
