GF lenses achieve an extremely high resolution and are therefore also prepared for future system extensions. The knowledge gathered during the development of the XF lenses and used for the GF lenses makes them a class of their own in which various Fujifilm technologies are applied. They are designed to take full advantage of the performance of the GFX 50S. The Fujinon GF23mmF4 R LM WR has a fixed focal length of 18mm (equivalent to 35mm) and is ideal for landscape and architectural photography. Regardless of the super wide-angle focal length, distortion is reduced to a minimum and due to the high resolution, the sharpness potential is exploited right up to the edges of the image. The autofocus is based on a linear motor for fast and quiet focusing. It is protected against dust and weather and works without problems at a temperature of up to -10°C. The lens combines the highest performance and reliability you would expect from a professional tool.

A Very Good Zoom!!

On a GFX100, this thing sparkles and shines - it's a whole different ballgame to FF. For several reasons. It's really sharp, especially around the f:11 mark (but impressive throughout its aperture range, perhaps a little fall off at the corners wide open, and certainly bests the Zeiss 18mm Milvius or the older Distagon 21 on a Canon5d4 or 5DSR even allowing for the different sensors). The distortion profile is completely different to a full frame lens - as long as you pay some attention to your verticals and your horizontals, you're going to be surprised at how well this lens controls distortion. Color rendition is particularly realistic, unlike the aforementioned Zeiss lenses, which tend to over-saturate color. There's hardly any need for color work in post. This is one of Fuji's strong points. Zone focussing is the order of the day here; and manual with close up work, as is the case with any lens this wide. Auto seems about par for the course otherwise - not particularly fast but more than adequate for a wide. It's a lovely lens to use manually. Everything feels so solid, well built and connected - good on the bigger body. I've only really used this lens in manual/raw modes, so can't comment on Fuji's film simulations, etc. This lens rewards patience and consideration - it's as good as or better than any of the other prime GF lenses I've used and bests the zooms. Highly recommended, if this length is what you want.

But I bought the new medium format Fuji GFX100s which is fantastic (separate review) so I needed a lens for it, and Fuji doesn't make an ultra zoom (yet?) so I chose the 45-100mm as closest to the range I usually use.The 35mm e quivalent of the Fuji 45-100mm is 36-79mm, so that sounds as if I'm giving up a lot at the top end. But in fact I'm not. Suppose I shoot an 11648x8736 image at 100 mm that includes a much larger image than the one I wanted, and then I crop out all but a 4928x3280 portion that is what I was after. I get the same image, with the same resolution, that I would have gotten shooting with the D850 at 236 mm. So in fact I am only losing the upper 64mm of my 300 mm lens zoom range. And at shorter focal lengths, I'm getting way better resolution. But what I really want to talk about is the fantastic performance of this lens. I did my first few dozen pictures in a low light setting that mostly pushed the auto-ISO up to 12800, and I was expecting noise and maybe shake problems. But the images are fantastic - nearly noise-free, and the image stabilization kept them superbly sharp. This lens works wonders. In operation it is fine. It is a bit bigger and heavier than my 28-300mm Nikkor, but not so much that it becomes a problem. The larger sensor requires a larger diameter lens, namely 89mm versus the 77mm of my Nikkors, and that extra glass makes it weigh about half a pound more. But that was not enough to make it unwieldy. It isn't cheap, but it's in the same price range as eg the Nikkor 24-70mm. I may eventually buy its 32-64mm partner for wider shots. For now I'm just blown away.

The only thing that I can think of that could possibly be improved is that if one is using this lens for landscape photography, it would be nice to have it a little wider at times like open to 32mm but this is probably not even possible. The positive end of this lens is endless and it turned out even better then I expected. This lens is extremely well made as are all of the Fujifilm lenses. Both the zoom and focus rings are very smooth. The aperture ring is perfect and has the nice C and A options with the lock. The image stabilization of this lens I find to be easily worth at least 4 stops if not 5. This lens is simply very well made with the weather sealing and all of the options.Pertaining to the performance of this lens, I find it to be very sharp from the middle to the edges all the way from f4 to f16. It may not perform quite as well near the edges at f4 but nothing that sticks out. There is a little bit of vignette near the edge at f4 if you turn off the auto correct on the lens but nothing that it does not take care of automatically within the camera when shooting. One thing that I was really surprised with was the bokeh. Of course when not zoomed in so shooting at the 45mm end, there is not really that much separation from the background as it can only open to f/4. However, when at the zoomed in end (100mm) and shooting wide open, one can really get very nice separation of the subject from the background and the bokeh is very smooth and pleasant. I was really surprised with just how nice it is in this way.I have been using this lens even more than I expected as it can really cover a wide variety of situations. It can be a very nice landscape lens that can cover tons of scenes, especially with how much one can crop with the 100mp on the camera while also being a very respectable portrait lens at the same time. I have enjoyed this lens even more than I expected!

Had to return the first sample because of a scratchy zoom ring, otherwise lens is beautiful. The rebate is questionable. It was impossible to submit. If Fuji is serious about rebates make it an instant rebate just like other manufacturers. There was no information on the length of warranty too. Looked it up on-line and I was disappointed to find out the warranty is only for one year(correct me if I am wrong). I own 10 Nikon lenses and their warranty is for 5 years.

Great all rounder
21 December 2021

I love this lens. It's bright and sharp and is the lens that spends most time actually attached to my camera. I would liken it to a good medium zoom, think 24-70, 2.8 (although its only the equivalent of about 50mm zoomed in). I use it for assignments, for architecture, general purpose and travel. Its just about OK for portraits but not quite. I'd have to grab one of my other lenses for serious portraiture. It feels solid and well built and made to last. With the new 35-70mm out on the market (I have not tried it), I hear many photographers are buying that lens instead, but this is proven, sharp and bright, so thats why I'm hanging on to it.For the GFX system, in my opinion, I'd say this is one of the top 3 lenses to have in your bag.

To set the context for my comments, I have been using the GFX 50R for about 6 months with Contax 645 Zeiss prime lenses and Fringer adapter. I have been well pleased with the results, but wanted the flexibility of a zoom. Why then the Fujifilm GF 45-100 instead of buying a used Zeiss 45-90 zoom? In one word: OIS (image stabilization). The Fujifilm lens is admittedly bulky, but it is surprisingly lightweight. It handles very smoothly, all the controls are well located and responsive. If traveling with the GFX 50R, I could see taking just the GF 45-100 and not feeling too limited.I am happy to have made this purchase, and do not regret choosing this zoom over either the Zeiss Contax 645 45-100mm, or the Fujifilm 32-64mm zoom. Note that both these options have no image stabilization. That was the make or break feature for me.

Richard's review of Fujifilm GF 23mm f4 R LM WR
17 June 2022

Pros: This lens is wide. In full frame/35mm terms it's 18mm, so it has a wide angle of view. But while a FF 18mm (or even more so a 12mm ASPC) lens will throw far off objects ts into the distance, the GF23mm. Familiar with the Fuji X100 series or 23mm XF lenses? Then this gives the same perspective but just more of it. It's great but needs understanding.Cons: None so far.

Spectacular Lens
11 April 2021

I have been taking pictures since I was a young child, and I have owned many cameras during my life, from my first Kodak box camera to my current Nikon D850, and many others. Fujifilm's announcement of the release of the GFX100s coincided roughly with my 65th birthday and my retirement from the full time practice of law, so I decided to get myself a present and try and expand to medium format.I received my GFX100s and the GF32-64 just three days ago. Fujifilm's announcement of the release of the GFX100s coincided roughly with my 65th birthday and my retirement from the full time practice of law, so I decided to get myself a present and try and expand to medium format.I received my GFX100s and the GF32-64 just three days ago. I have been utterly blown away by everything from the build quality, to how easy it is to use, to the simply stunning quality of the images right out of the camera. The image quality out of this zoom lens is better than many premium, prime lenses I have used. The images are razor sharp from corner to corner, the contrast is stunning, the color amazing and the distortion is minimal. The images that the GFX 100s and this lens produce are beautiful, stunning, spectacular and mind blowing. This camera/lens combination is capable of producing images and prints that are as, if not more, spectacular than large frame film cameras. I have seen many original Ansel Adams prints in museums. The Center for Creative Photography in Tucson was just a few blocks down the street from my apartment when I was in law school. The images that this camera and lens can produce are that good. The images just POP. Period.

Superb image quality, but pricy for what you get
15 December 2021

Don't get me wrong, this lens is magnificent. Its image quality is unmatched, and that's definitely the most important aspect of a lens. It is very sharp even wide open. That said, I feel it's a bit overpriced for what you get, but I'll start with the positives.THE GOOD:- As I said, the image quality is superb. f/16 renders an incredible amount of detail. I have not experienced softness shooting wide open like a few of other reviewers have.- This lens is weather sealed. As a landscape photographer, this is a must. I feel more confident being in the field (literally) knowing my lens can get a little bit wet.- Build quality is pretty good. It's still plastic, but a tougher one by the feel of it. I imagine they opted for plastic construction to cut down on both ... MoreDon't get me wrong, this lens is magnificent. I imagine they opted for plastic construction to cut down on both weight and cost, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed it wasn't metal. The Fuji X system spoiled me in that regard.- The feel of the lens is solid and tactile. The zoom has good resistance and has no lens creep (yet) and the aperture ring has a pleasant click. The NOT SO GOOD:- I know this is a larger lens to accommodate the larger sensor but more glass alone shouldn't equate to a high price tag. It has no image stabilization, zoom lock, or even fast aperture to justify the price. The only notable feature this has apart from the optics is the weather sealing. At least they gave us that. But otherwise, this is a $2,300 bare bones basic slower zoom lens. They could've at least given us OIS to help with the slower f/4 aperture. A tripod is most likely necessary with anything slower than 1/60, realistically. You could probably cheat it to 1/30 but you'd have to have a very steady hand.- This isn't really a negative, technically, but it isn't a positive either. This is a very heavy lens. It makes my 50R nosedive and it is not very comfortable to walk around with it around my neck. Like I said, it's not really a negative or a positive, though. It's just part of the territory of owning a medium format system. Bigger sensors requires bigger lenses to cover it. More glass means more weight. So take that for what it is.OVERALL:Overall I like the lens. Many of the negatives don't really affect me because I'm mostly a landscape photographer so my camera is always on a tripod, eliminating the need for OIS, weight relief, and a wider aperture. But those few times I am not shooting landscapes, I do wish I had those other features. Someone who will be using this for studio work and will need to hand hold, however, may need to consider those aspects before purchasing.
