Advantages of GFX 50 S II over GFX 50R

Previously owned GFX50R, 50S II is great improvement, better handling, better batteries, better cable management and above all, IBIS. With the 50R I used focus peaking, not always successful, the S II I love the focus scale, I wish the focus magnification was easier to read. I am happy with the resolution. For my purposes, I don?t see the need of 100MP. In terms of lenses, I would love to have a Zoom 64-128mm. Could shooting "without a lens" be renamed to ?manual lens?? Thank you!

An amazing camera for landscape photos

To start off, I stated that this camera is amazing for landscape photos for a reason. The speed of the autofocus is not an area of excellence. While in my experience, the autofocus is very accurate, it definitely cannot keep up with motion that is quick at all. So if you are mainly wanting to take pictures of sports or even kids who are moving a lot, this camera would not be a good selection for you. However, for shooting landscape or any type of photos where the targets are more fixed, it is amazing! First the image stabilization is wonderful. I cannot believe how slow of exposure times that I have gotten very clear photos. First the image stabilization is wonderful. I cannot believe how slow of exposure times that I have gotten very clear photos. I easily agree that a person gets six stops which is very useful in dealing with the larger sensor which gives much more detail but also makes the lenses not as fast so a person is often shooting at smaller apertures. The detail a person gets out of each shot is truly amazing. If you are shooting with a wide angle lens and then blow the photo up to 100%, you can see details which blow your mind. This amount of detail allows a person to make large prints that stand out due to such intricate detail and this makes the scene larger than life. You can blow up the image and get great results do to all of the detail in the shot. Along with the detail, the amount of light differential which a person can have within a single shot is also incredible. You can take sunset photos shooting directly at the sun and get perfect exposures with only one shot and you do not need to do layering of the photos in photoshop afterwards. This saves a huge amount of processing time in the end while giving shots that look even more realistic in my opinion.Another thing that I love about this camera is the ease of use. You have so many options of what to assign to the different buttons which are placed in very easily usable locations such that it makes it a true joy to use. Also, the weight of this camera is also great to me. I would never believe that I am holding a medium format camera with OIS when considering it's weight and size. This is especially true when using the kit lens. It is so light and compresses nicely while giving great images.I have no regrets about purchasing this camera as I feel it has opened up many doors for doing landscape photography!

I absolutely love this camera! This camera has blown my mind away with its quality and color reproduction! Having the large resolution gives me the ability to crop my photos in ways I was never able to! Highly recommend this to anyone looking to get into medium format cameras. This definitely beats the competition with its smaller form factor compared to the rest of the medium format cameras out there.

Excellent medium format camera + lens
23 August 2022

This is a delightful tool to capture images. We made, easy to use with razor sharp images. The combination of GFX 50 S II + 45-100 f4 lens provides the range needed for my needs. Simple kit, excellent balance and takes care of my needs. As a film user with HASSELBLAD of 35 years, I felt that Fujifilm excellent lenses and GFX format would allow me to produce good images. I have not been disappointed, but truly impressed. Availability of Fujifilm products and high quality optics is my reason for using their equipment for landscape photography.

Great Image Quality, Even Handheld
13 December 2021

The quality of the images I've been able to capture is outstanding. I've been surprised at how successful I've been when shooting handheld, the camera's IBIS is just that good. After switching to APS-C and Fuji cameras 9 years ago I was ready to get another larger sensor camera. I could have chosen any of the great FF offerings, but I shoot mostly landscape and tabletop and the larger sensor of the GFX 50sII made more sense to me.Not yet 5 stars but getting there, the last star is on me. The camera has a steeper learning curve than I anticipated, especially after shooting the Fuji brand for nearly a decade. The custom settings (C1 to C6) behave in a different way versus the X-Series and the command dials and buttons are also taking more time to get used to. Great Upgrade for Pros
8 February 2022

This is an impressive camera and brings a ton of value for those looking to bring a noticeable upgrade to their professional work. If you create images on a regular basis and you have a lot of control over your shooting environment, you'll appreciate what this camera brings to the table. Video? Sports? Action? Night? Well, if that's where you do most of your work I'd recommend looking at another camera.

Great improvements to the GFX system!
30 November 2021

I feel like Fujifilm has been listening to user feedback and incorporating it into these new Medium Format Digital Cameras. Even though it has the same sensor as its predecessors, the 50S II greatly improves in terms of usability and features. The in-camera IBIS is incredibly useful, a new face focus selection feature makes focusing on subjects in groups even easier, and overall the camera feels great to hold and shoot. I'm super excited to see where Fujifilm takes the GFX in the future, and will continue to invest in this system.

Near Perfect

Coming from the professional world of film photography, this is a welcome addition. With the rising price of film, I looked for an option to my hasselblad. With its affordable medium format sensor this fit the bill. Using an adapter so that I can use my old lenses, the transition was almost seamless. Though somewhat skeptical of image stabilization, this has greatly streamlined my process. I can get away with using just a monopod where I previously had to use a tripod. And the sensor is beautiful. I only shoot in raw and have so far loved the sensor. I only wish it was more like the raw format in Black Magic cameras. Over saturated colors seem out of place in this camera. The build quality of the camera is very good. No it doesnt shoot like a sports camera but neither did my hasselblad. That would be a misuse of this camera. But Fuji has a made a couple odd choices. Most notably the joy stick. Its too small and nothing like some other cameras I have owned. Also the viewfinder level is a bare minimum. Just a line across the screen. With a medium format camera this is an essential item and should be more in line in what you get in mid-range Nikons. The tilting viewfinder is nice but for medium format not that useful. Some have complained about the evf but Ive had no problem with it. The image is what matters and its beautiful.

Sensor Movement is Probably IBIS
25 November 2021

I couldn't reply to the other reviewer, but I believe the sensor movement is the IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) at work. It adjusts for pitch and yaw (horizontal and vertical) movement to allow more stable shots at lower shutter speeds.Overall: What this camera does well, it does better then almost any camera on the market, which imo is still image quality via greater dynamic range, color tonal depth, and the unique compression of lenses at wider dimensions courtesy of being medium format. You are losing class leading AF, burst shot, and overall flexibility. If you want a hybrid do-it-all camera, this is not for you. If you seek those benefits and can live with the costs, with some digital perks then this will deliver. If the sensor was upgraded and the camera had phase detect AF instead of contrast detect. This would solve most of the problems it has, but would jack the price, but would also merit a 5th star in my book.

THE must have MF Camera
12 February 2023

After enjoying the 50r for 14 months I made the "lateral" move to the 50sii only the find it is a HUGE upgrade. The AF is better as is the face/eye detect. I really like the ergonomics (with an added baseplate) and it's much easier to adjust SS and aperture without pulling the camera from my face. As someone that has worked with pro digital MF cameras for over a decade, this is the one to buy for commercial advertising, studio work, travel, street, and personal work. It's NOT A SPORTS CAMERA. It isn't supposed to be. The 50sII would be a good deal at twice the price.
