A gem of a camera, with lots to discover

I bought this as a camera that I can take with me everywhere I go. It fits snugly in my coat pocket, it's a bit bulkier than it looks in photos. It is easy to use in EXR automatic mode as a point and shoot camera, but it has many other modes and features which repay study - I recommend buying Alexander White's book on this camera, which really covers all its features and potential. It's extremely well built and feels solid, the controls are firm and well placed, and the image quality far exceeds expectations from a camera with a relatively small sensor of 2/3 inch. The various film simulations are great, results are good under most conditions, and it's fun to use. Charming cult classic, solid performer but expensive compared to better featured Lumix bridge cameras

Cult classic, but you can beat its specs with wider and faster lenses in the Panasonic Lumix LX series. A used Lumix LX 3 goes from $50 to $100 depending on accessories, condition; LX 5, bumps that another $50 and the same for the LX 7. LX 100 would start around $200 but anything under $350 is reasonable. I say that comparing the similar sized LX series dollar for dollar to the Fuji X10 -- well you are going to pay a premium for the pleasure of owning one. And the LX series offers EVF and optical view finders as well as an 18 mm lens attachment -- although there often are as pricey as the cameras themselves. I outfitted my Fuji X10 with retro accessories: leather roll film holder converted to hold data chips; Takumar lens shade case now holds batteries

Ideal camera for travel-a decent range of focal lengths in a metal, compact body that feels old-school quality. f2.0 lens, useful for low-light use.Never used the flash! Excellent quality image, capable of considerable enlargement from excellent sensor-forget the mega-pixel count, just look at the images.Has a useful optical viewfinder for people like me who hate trying to compose on an LED screen, especially in bright sunlight and whose close-focus is not as good as it once was! Like it so much I bought one for all three of us.Does not replace a DSLR, but a very useful alternative when travelling light. Think of it as a fixed-lens Leica and you get the idea.......

Fuji X10: The smartest Super-model on the planet?
10 February 2013

I read all the reviews of course before I bought it. It has lived up to expectations too. Has a bit of a learning curve (which I am still on) and as I bought it used some parameters had been set up already. Took me a while to realise I was shooting RAW and converting in-camera. Once I changed the setting everything started to fall into place. Amazing construction, very tactile and packed with useful features and performance. Bought a half-leather case from rokkor999 on ebay and it completes the retro look. Looks like you dropped a grand on it. Picture quality is incredible... Nothing negative to say. Battery life isn't amazing but spares are small and cheap and I got 2 with my purchase. The only issue is, I am looking at my Lumix GH2 and wondering if I should join the Fuji eco-system instead. Had written them off as a manufacturer although my first digi-cam was a Fuji 602 which was brilliant and I made 10x8 prints from that '3MP' beauty. If you are wondering whether you should - don't - just get it. If you have grown up with manual cameras you'll love the feeling this camera gives you - with no compromises. I can't imagine what they'll do next. Will the X20 be even better?

Great camera (but not one-size-fits-all)
16 June 2012

Pros: Large Clear LCD, Small / Compact, Nice Body Color, Good in Low Light, Good Image QualityCons: Difficult user interfaceOther thoughts: I'm still learning the ropes on this camera, being used to a Nikon DSLR. I found that if I expected it to be able to do everything my DSLR does, I was bound for disappointment. The key for me was embracing that it's different with its own particular strengths. Also, I have grown to have certain ways of working with my Nikon that aren't familiar or even possible with the X100.In some ways the X100 not as versatile (prime lens only, two hands required to focus, slower to turn on/reawaken, limited timer and long exposure options) BUT in practical terms it can be more versatile due to its compact size and low-key profile. The ... MorePros: Large Clear LCD, Small / Compact, Nice Body Color, Good in Low Light, Good Image QualityCons: Difficult user interfaceOther thoughts: I'm still learning the ropes on this camera, being used to a Nikon DSLR. Its automatic white balancing is exemplary. It takes gorgeous shots and I look forward to learning it better.

Great camera to use!
9 July 2023

Got this near mint Fujifilm X Series X10 12.0MP Digital Camera from Japan. Easy to use but does take some time getting use to Fujifilm system as I am a Canon camera user. Despite some minor scratches, the product looks good as new tbh. The film simulation is such a great tool. Havent gotten to use it extensively, but as far as it goes, Im enjoying using this camera so much.

Great little camera for travelling if you don't want to lug all your kit.
1 June 2012

I was looking for a compact to carry about rather than my Canon EOS SLR so quality was of importance to me. Having been involved in photography for 44+ years I wanted something that was unobtrusive and wouldn't attract attention. I couldn't afford 3000-4000 for a Leica or the Fuji X1 so I looked around. Although the camera isn't without its faults (which is) this provided a very good balance of quality and price, The sensor is about twice the size of most compacts so is able to retain detail so often lost in typical point and shoot compacts. The viewfinder isn't as good as I would have liked but the rear screen quality is brilliant. The range of the lens being 28-112mm is all I need (and most other people) in everyday photography. If you want to do sports, wildlife or insects you are looking at the wrong sort of camera anyway. As a travelling companion with one of the cheap drop front cases it is just what i wanted. I have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the images taken under very poor light and the camera is easy to use even for beginners. Being larger than most gives you something to hold onto and helps avoid the dreaded camera shake. The metal body also inspires confidence and the feeling that you have something special in your hands not another plastic toy. The style of the camera leaves most people ignoring you thinking its just an old camera, great if you don't want to attract the wrong type of attention in city environment. The provided software Silkypics is in my opinion awful, get either Adobe Photoshop element 10 or Lightroom 4 if you want to use RAW files (both will process the images as Fuji X100 ones). Bottom line if you want a really great handling compact that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and produces quality images buy one, I did and am so glad I did.

No DSLR, but great shots
14 July 2012

I have been looking for a small camera that I could take to family and personal events and everywhere and not miss photo opportunities and get some decent pictures. I am happy with this camera. You can tell the difference from my professional cameras, but it is not bad. It has a really good AI mode, so most of the time I do not fiddle with the manual controls and just use it as a point and shoot.I got a camera cover manufactured or at least labeled by EZphoto, made of really good leatherette. The Fuji case was just too expensive. You will want to get a case. I also got two extra batteries from a third party because the battery life on this thing lasted about 225 shots. It looks like a high quality compact German camera from the 1960s with all the little knobs, so it is quite non-threatening. I have had some great shots with this thing. That often described "orb problem" is not an issue for me. I would just remember the particular weakness of the device and compensate for it.

Old School style... dated performance...?
2 February 2017

A useful all rounder- the X10 offering style- with a fast lens, good stabilizer and decent image quality. Those looking to make LARGE prints might want to look elsewhere due to the mediocre resolution by today's standards- but good optical performance and good colour balance ( and higher DR in 6mp mode) makes the best of what it has. If budget allowed- the X30's high-resolution viewfinder and much improved AF performance might be the way to go- but if you're in no hurry- a useful second-hand buy at sub- 150... if a fully functioning, cared for example...

The best point-and-shoot digital camera?
6 September 2012

- Why did I buy it? My friend had bought one and let me inspect it. It felt robust and the overall build quality seemed good. I realized my SLR film camera was going to be impractical in future, unless I was processing the film myself. In addition, the Fuji X10's smaller size seemed desirable compared to the SLR camera. The zoom lens has good specs with its f:2.0 @ 28mm and I managed to get a few good test pictures on auto setting just by pointing and shooting even when the light was poor. - What I like most about it: The aspherical zoom lens, which in my opinion, is really great and covers the most common motives. Also the macro is fantastic on the X10 where one is able to get as close as one half of an inch of the subject. The built in flash, which is handy for "fill in" when the subject is back lit. The vast amount of settings which is possible (probably a bit of a learning curve before they are all mastered). - What I dislike about it: As it turned out, the build quality had a shortcoming. The shutter release button base is made of plastic, and it broke one my friends X10. So I need to be careful and not to use the soft release button which came with my camera. Around the Internet, people says that there is problem with the image sensor in that light reflected from surfaces tends to be burned out and loose details. The phenomena is referred to as "orbing" or "blooming". However, newly produced cameras probably has another sensor than the cameras which was produced from the start. I have not experience to much problem in this regard. The battery capacity is rather "meager" and you need to have an extra at hand at all times so as not to run out of juice. All in all, however, I think the X10 is a good camera.
