Thanks to a new type of lens design, it has been possible to avoid the optical distortion that typically occurs with ultra wide-angle lenses; digital correction is therefore unnecessary. This feature contributes to the high resolution performance of the lens down to the corners of the image. The optical setup consists of 10 elements in 7 groups, including 2 aspherical lenses and 3 extra low dispersion ED lenses. The edges of the seven aperture lamellas are rounded to ensure the highest image quality. This lens is truly a must own lens even if you don't shoot wide often. The lens is sharp and with little to no distortion which is truly amazing for an ultra wide angle lens. Comparing this to my Nikon 14mm f/2.8, the fuji is superior being sharper in the center and in the corners with lower distortion. The fact that its also a fraction of the cost is a bonus. Wish: it was a little smaller to match the compact form factor of the fuji cameras. A must own lens in my humble opinion.

The focusing ring is combined with a clutch for easy switching between manual and autofocusing which is a nice idea. Focusing speed is good but I wish the manual focus ring was more damped. Not quite an issue as I zone focus most of the time when using manual focusing with this lens. Aperture ring clicks are well defined, unlike on some of my previous Fuji lenses. It's absolutely cracking in the centre of the frame right from f/2.8. Corners are still great at this aperture albeit not exceptional but of course it greatly improves by stopping down and the sweet spot is between f/5.6 and f/8, which is the most commonly used setting for the large depth of field it provides at this viewing angle anyways. All in all, it's a brilliant performer, if it had weather sealing this would be the perfect landscape lens to me but it doesn't stop me from using it outdoors. I find it remains attached to my camera most of the time which is a telltale sign. I tend to combine this lens with the 18-55mm zoom on most of my trips as they share the same filter size and these two lenses cover most of my needs and comprise a fairly light setup. Highly recommended buy.

As one of the older XF lens designs, one's expectations might be overly, um, managed with regard to the image quality this 21mm equivalent lens can produce, especially on the 40MP X-T5 and X-H2 sensors. Well, unmanage them. This rather surprisingly small lens produces technically outstanding photos, with excellent color and contrast. The lens is well suited for real estate, urban, and landscape photography. It also seems to produce almost no side exaggeration distortions when photographing larger groups of people. All in all an excellent tool in one's kit.

I line them up in three categories...lenses that do a great job with no particular weakness(ie, kit lens, 35/2, etc,. Then there are lenses that are tack sharp...80 macro, 60 macro, 90/2, 50/2, etc. Then there are lenses that are visually interesting...35/1.4, 23/1.4, the 16/1.4, and the lens in consideration...the XF14/2.8. People will use the word 'rendering' as well to describe this. The best way I know how to define it is that the lens brings something to the table that is added to the photographer's skill to make the image more appealing. In a sense, a wide angle lens does that inherently anyway, but the 14 seems to go beyond that a bit and create that ... But when the situation calls for it, the might XF14 will answer the call and be standing along side the first generation Fuji XF lenses to make life a bit more interesting.In terms of handling, I find nothing objectionable about this lens at all. The aperture ring is not loose, the manual focus slide is never in the way, and the 14 is in now way 'large' or heavy. The newest Fuji lenses will focus a tad faster...ie, the 16, 23/2, 35/2, and the 50/2. They are also weather resistant. They all have their strong points...and my perspective of shooting a lot of frames with the 14 over the past two weeks, the strength of the XF14 is its visual personality. I simply find it an interesting lens that produces interesting images. And since I own the 16-55 zoom lens, the 14 provides me with a prime that is not replicated in anything else I own.

It has a metal body that is solidly built and is well balanced on my Fujifilm X-E2 camera. I knew I would put it to good use when taking pictures of the ruins and topography of the land. I was very impressed and happy with it until it stopped focusing in the heat of the day. My other Fuji lenses continued to work in the heat of the day, but not this wide-angle lens. Indoors, away from the heat of the sun, it worked great. This failure probably had something to do with the electronics. When I returned home I returned the lens as defective. However, the aperture ring operates smoothly but needs more friction because it is easily dislodged from the A mode when carrying it. The focus system operates in a different manner from the other lenses in the Fuji lineup. The focus ring has two positions. To focus manually, you pull the ring back towards the camera. This operation uncovers a distance scale. Push the ring forward and it locks in auto focus position and will no longer rotate. Focus is electronically driven in either mode. Auto focus is quick, with no searching back and forth. The plastic petal-shaped hood will reverse on the lens, making for good storage. Be aware that while using the camera's flash the hood creates a shadow across part of the picture. Always remember to remove the hood when taking flash photos. This lens is a genuinely wideangle, high quality prime lens.

Having just been shooting in the Highlands of Scotland, the 23mm lens of the X100s felt limiting--zooming with my feet would have meant falling off cliffs! I'm v ry happy with the 18-135 but needed/wanted a wider angle lens. I was between Fuji's 14 and 16, and had planned on renting one of them for an forthcoming roadtrip. A fabulous offer from B&H made the idea of renting ridiculous: for $200 more dollars, this lens could be mine. Color reproduction, in Fuji fashion, is astonishingly good. But this past Xmas my wife and I travelled to my son's and family's place for Xmas. And to experience our first Christmas holiday with our new grandchild. I brought along my 50, 35 and 14 lenses. I don't know what I was thinking, the 50 inside just doesn't work. The 35 was still not giving me the views I was after. I pulled out the 14 and it worked like a charm. Why did I only give it four stars? The loose aperture ring which really isn't that big a deal, but to get 5 stars the lens has to be perfect. This lens is just nearly perfect. My XF10-24 was in for repair and I had no wide angle option for my vacation, so I decided to try the 14mm as a small alternative and as a nice complement to my 18-55. I kind of knew what to expect from reading all of the reviews and seeing great photos shot with this lens but I have to say it performed admirably. My reason for getting it was primarily for travel due to its small size but I found that I liked it so much I actually sold my 10-24 to finance other gear. I may regret that some day but for now the 14 does the job. My reason for getting it was primarily for travel due to its small size but I found that I liked it so much I actually sold my 10-24 to finance other gear. I may regret that some day but for now the 14 does the job. From a handling aspect I liked the marked aperture ring, as opposed to the unmarked one on the 10-24 (why?), and the focusing clutch.The close focusing ability and sharpness right from the get-go at f2.8 makes this lens useful as a walk around, especially in an urban environment. At least 60% of my photos from a recent trip were shot with the 14 and my 35 f1.4 and 18-55 rounded out the rest. Coupled with an X-T10, it made for a very compact travel setup that yielded great results.Being a prime lens there is that compromise on versatility compared to a zoom. But the prime lends itself to thinking a bit more about composition and pre-visualizing angles of view. I find the 21mm equivalent focal length offers that wide-angle view without getting too carried away. As an old film photographer I find it is a classic view.
This is one of my favorite lenses in the Fuji lineup. For a decently fast wide it sports an excellent performance with not much to complain about.Good: Very sharp across the frame at most apertures and always sharp in the center. Contrast - while not up to the level of excellence that some of Fujis other primes reach, is still great. AF is quick enough. Build quality is excellent and size is just right. Little-to-no distortion is quite a feature. It has no issues with flaring or ghosting.Not so good: Coma isnt a huge problem but does exist to a moderate extent at f/2.8 and mostly vanishes by f/4 - not the best for astro but with some clever processing and framing you can work around it. Sunstars dont have much definition.IMO this lens makes a great all-around wide angle, its always in my bag when I need a wide.
