A great GPS and good Launch monitor?

I've had all the Garmin products over the years. Currently using the S60 watch and this G80. Both devices are amazing but this handheld is next level.. the on coarse GPS is fantastic, detailed and easy to see/use.. the launch monitor adds a whole dimension to this device. The readings are pretty accurate, especially to the average golfer. Being off by 5-10 yards isn't going to make much difference to an average golfer.. the driving range experience is so much more interesting now. This will definitely help improve your game. Many more features than what I have mentioned. Is it pricey, 100% .. but it has a boat load of features that help compensate the price tag. I'm glad I bought it.

Good device but ........

Let me first say the device is in excellent condition. Have used this product for the past two years and found it to be very reliable. Unfortunately, the power button is not allowing me to shut it down or power it up. The only way to do either is by plugging the device into a power source using the USB cable. Very frustrating. Contacted Garmin support but they were unable to help. My only recourse is to replace it through them at a cost of $200 + GST. So more money for a device over $700 continues to rise.

Great GPS, Score keeping, Training and App features!
16 January 2022

I've had the G80 for a year now. I like:GPS, Score card, phone app, tempo, virtual rounds. Not liking:Launch monitor inconsistent measurements. No spin #'s.Although, you get an idea of carry distances, swing speed, it's not consistent. Recently had a fitting using GCQuad and my swing speed and carry #'s were closer to what I experience on the course. GPS is very accurate and to be able to pick a landing spot on a second shot, it gives you the exact yrds. For the price, you get a lot of great features.

This is a very useful tool for me. Of course your mileage may vary. As an average golfer who doesn't have access to professional level equipment things like club head speed and distance were always very directional guesses for me. The launch monitor feature has allowed me to better understand, with more certainty, the more technical aspects of my swing which adds confidence on the course. On to the GPS. I do not belong to a club and my local munis/public's are usually packed so I play whatever and wherever I can. This means I'm usually playing a course for the first of second time with no context on where anything really is. The GPS is great at being able to help me navigate the various courses. Launch Monitor was not accurate
9 April 2021

I bought this to use as a launch monitor in a garage / practice net set up. It was registering my 7 iron total yardage (carry + roll) between 110 and 125 yards. I would have expected between 150-170. Similar issues with all the other clubs, registering 30% or so off expected yardages. I spent hours looking for product support and was generally unsuccessful. During my research, I located mostly positive reviews from other purchasers praising the accuracy of the launch monitor, but I did find several similar stories from other purchasers. Perhaps I received a faulty product. I have always used Garmin for GPS and have no doubt that GPS on the G80 would have been fantastic on the course. Packed with Features not one done well.

I bought this thinking of all the cool features but mainly just wanting GPS on courses that are new to me. This product is packed full of awesomeness and if you are reading this you are already aware of them. The launch monitor was ok but had trouble registering accurately my 10 year old sons shots. He doesn't play tournament golf but is generally better than any kid on our local course as well as 75% of the adults and his shots were easily picked up on our Skytrak. The virtual round is a joke with lame graphics and a bizarre hazard feature. If you buy it and read this review you will smile when you try it thinking, that guy was right, this is a joke. I returned this promptly and purchased the Garmin Approach S62 watch and because I'm addicted to golf the SkyGolf X400 for my GPS device. The S62 is the best golf watch I've ever owned, if you buy one make sure you update it before using. The x400 is 100 times better at providing on course data and the graphics blow the G80 away.

Pretty good

As a GPS unit, it's fine. The yardage was a little different from what was marked on the course I was playing. Not sure if an update was needed for the course, but it was 5-10 yards off whenever I had a course marker to compare with. The radar feature for estimating how far you hit the ball was interesting. I tried that at the driving range and probably 90% of the estimates were reasonably accurate, the remaining 10% were way off. So you gotta have some idea of what you hit to know if you should pay any attention to the distance estimate on a shot. For the price, I would have liked to have a way to specify a club to track the distance hit on individual shots while playing a round. Pretty good... sort of
12 July 2021

First... for an on course GPS unit, its larger size and ability to use your finger to "drag' around the screen to get distances is very nice. If this was $300 and that's what all it did, it's probably worth it.The launch monitor is fairly good but limited. As I understand it, it's simply taking your swing speed and calculating what that would convert to on distance. I found that shorter distances were reasonably accurate but the longer the club, (in my opinion) the less accurate the numbers were. Today, I hit a 4 hybrid on the range and then grabbed my 3 wood and swung somewhat similar but the distance was noticeably different (in real ball fight) but the G80 said the distance was almost the same. It's kind of cool to play different courses while on the range ... MoreFirst... for an on course GPS unit, its larger size and ability to use your finger to "drag' around the screen to get distances is very nice. No... If it's on sale and you like a larger screen GPS unit, then this is it.I have zero doubt that in 5 years, Garmin and others will be producing units like this that use far better technology but for now, not a bad unit.

Returning this Product
7 March 2020

While I understand this device is not supposed to achieve the accuracy of say a flightscope or trackman, the launch monitor function needs to achieve reasonable levels of accuracy when providing distances to be useful. It does not. I tested this device at the range and at a golf fitting studio with access to much more expensive/accurate launch monitors to get a feel for the accuracy of the Garmin G80. I found the ball speed numbers to be quite accurate on the Garmin, but all other metrics were mediocre to poor. On stated yardages I found the Garmin to consistently be off by between 8-12 yards, which is close to a full club on the high side. I also found that when the Driver was tested the inaccuracy was highlighted to even greater extremes.
