Got this a few days ago & finally got the chance to use it. Initial setup was very easy & I had no problem getting it to sync with the app on my phone. Once I started using it I kept getting a message saying there was interference with the unit, and finally figured out that it was the fluorescent light that was directly overhead in my garage. Once I turned that off, the message stopped popping up. Alos found it was having difficulty picking up just a regular golf ball. I found myself having to hit several shots to get one to register. Sounds like the use of the RCT balls by Titleist will fix this, so I ordered a box and hopefully that fixes the problem. I’m continuing to be surprised how awesome this R10 is. Do not waste your money. Maybe it works great outdoors but like most people, I bought this to use in my home. I was very excited to use the driving range features and the simulated courses. Unfortunately, this experience has been a nightmare. First, they don't tell you that you can't use wiffle or foam balls. So I bought the Titleiest RCT special balls and indoor net. Now it picks up the shots but everything is about 50% the correct distance. They said to move the net back and I did to the safest possible distance and used a 5 iron to make sure I didn't go over the net; distance was still 50% off (on the pure shots, it said my average carry with the 5 iron was 110; while it should be around 160. My 8 iron was only carrying 90 yards according to the device. ... MoreDo not waste your money. Maybe it works great outdoors but like most people, I bought this to use in my home. Overall I’m fairly satisfied with my purchase. It allows me to play a round of golf I’m my backyard any time. That’s pretty cool. The major problem is the distance calculation. It’s about 30-40% short on all of my shots. So it is frustrating to play some of the games when I can only hit my driver 100 yards, on longer corses a nice drive will get me to the last tee box lol. I’m not a strong golfer I can usually only hit it 175 on a great day. That’s really my only complaint. All of the other readings and trajectory seem accurate. It is easy and quick to connect to my phone. I did find if I change the elevation a few thousand feet it will show the correct distances of my shots so I’ve been playing with that at the range to figure out what is accurate. Somewhere around 2000-3000 feet elevation more than my location. This still doesn’t help me if I wanted to play online because that is preset so I am at quite a disadvantage unless everyone is having the same issues. Other have said 10-15 yards but sometimes it’s even 50% short. I have 8’ of travel for the ball and 7’ behind the ball to put the r10. If the distance was accurate I’d give it a 5 star but it’s way off.
I purchased the Garmin R10 Approach a few weeks ago. Set up is easy, but one of those things it is trial and error to find things out along the way. Such as it will only sync to one device. I thought I would also use my iPad instead of iPhone, but apparently cannot use an iPad as it is made for only the phone. It is relatively accurate, but my main issue right now is registering shots. I would say that about 1 out of every 6 shots do not register. I read quite a bit and I am using it in my garage and have a net set up. But read where the concrete floor can give bad readings, so I put down a carpet. If you have a raised mat, you should raise the R10 unit to the mat level which I did. But continue to get shots that do not register. I did try support and after the main questions of did I download current software, did I calibrate, etc. they only said there is a lot of info on the website and should go through all of that. One thing they did ask is if I have a waggle before my shot. I do but apparently that is not good as it may register a waggle as the beginning of a shot, and when you don’t take a swing it will then will take time to re-set the device for the next shot. So if you waggle, apparently you have to wait until the unit goes back to green and then take your shot. I have not yet had a chance to test, but apparently after you waggle, you need to wait until it turns green again.
I wanted to wait several weeks before giving my thoughts, in order to fully give this device a solid evaluation.I came to this monitor from a Flightscope Mevo (not the Mevo+), as I didn't want to spend the $2000+ for the Mevo+, and I went all in on the Garmin Ecosystem, buying the R10, S62 watch and the CT10 sensors.Living in the Northeast, I've not yet had the opportunity to use this outside, so my thoughts are based on my experiences with indoor use. We have a golf simulator in my apartment building with foresight technology, which is highly accurate. I've been using this monitor largely with Titleist Pro V1 RCT balls for the best results. My experience thus far has been mixed; the numbers for all of my clubs (even after calibration) are consistently off by anywhere from 10-15 yards. The spin numbers with the RCT balls are pretty accurate, usually within 200rpm of the GCQuad, which is impressive. It's possible that once I'm able to practice outdoors, the numbers will be more accurate, so I'm adopting a wait-and-see approach for now.
I purchased this less than a month ago and have used It at an outdoor range for 6 sessions. This is a range I have gone to for years and have laser Ed all the pins pins to gauge distance and carry in the past. Right out of the box this was easy to set up and connect to the phone but the numbers were grossly off. I watched my gap wedge fly over a pin at 115 yds and say my carry was 90yds. Similar for a 150 yd pin getting readings in the 120’s. I went through recalibration of the device to make sure I was using it properly. No changes. I have started to ignore all the distance and carry reading and use this for ONLY club path, angle of attack, club speed amd ball speed. For the driver, the back fence of the range is 250 yds and my ball is landing at 245 if not hitting the bottom of the fence on the fly and I rarely get a reading longer than 225 for carry. Really disappointed that a device this expensive could be so wrong with read outs. I play off a 1.4 hdcp, so I am very well versed in my normal stats.
The only function I have used with the R10 is the Driving Range. The numbers I am seeing are well below my normal averages. So, at first I thought it was the setup I had in my basement (hitting into a net). However, I took the R10 to the PGA SuperStore (used the practice bay) were I compared the figures with the Foresight setup. The only reliable figure was ball speed (R10 was usually 1 mph faster). The R10 was usually 2 degrees greater for launch angle and the spin numbers (back spin and side spin) were all over the place. Many times it would show a draw when I hit a fade or vice versa. As I went from wedge to 7i to 3H to 3W to Driver the numbers got worse, especially the carry and total distance. My best drive carried 265 with a rollout to 292 on the Foresight. ... MoreThe only function I have used with the R10 is the Driving Range. The numbers I am seeing are well below my normal averages. As I went from wedge to 7i to 3H to 3W to Driver the numbers got worse, especially the carry and total distance. My best drive carried 265 with a rollout to 292 on the Foresight. However, the same numbers on the R10 was 251 and 266. This was probably due to a higher spin rate and launch angle with the R10. Also, my hybrids and woods would many times have a smash factor greater than 1.50. I have seen smash factors as high as 1.62. My R10 is up to date (says the latest version is 4.00) Having said that, I was schedule to get my R10 in late Feb/early March before they stopped producing them due to the chip shortage. Supposedly, they were going to different chips due to the supply constraints. If that is the case, maybe they don’t have the firmware/software optimized just yet (much like the issues when the R10 first came out last year). The other issue is with the app (android). When I want to look at the stats from my sim session the app is kind of clunky. For instance, it allows you to filter the clubs used. So, let’s say, you only want to look at the Driver. After you look at the shot you are interested in and go back to the home page, the filter has been removed and all the shots appear again. Also, if there are more shots than you can see on the screen you have to scroll to get there. The issue is when you come back to the Home Screen it may or may not take you back to the same place. Most of the time that doesn’t. So, you end up at the first shot and have to scroll again if you want to see shots around the one you were just looking at. I know one of the great features is the sim capability. However, with inaccurate numbers it could be a very frustrating experience. As of now, as the title says, I wouldn’t recommend this if you are planning to use it indoors. As far as The Indoor Golf Shop experience, it has been amazing. While this whole delay with the R10 was completely out of their control, they were great in keeping me informed with the latest updates coming from the manufacture and even offered compensation for the delay. I have never come across a company that offered compensation for a situation totally out of their control. Talk about great customer service. And this was the first time I have ordered anything from them. But it won’t be the last time. Thank you to The Indoor Golf Shop for an experience that exceeded all expectations.
The R10 really has potential as a cost effective launch monitor, but it has some deficiencies mostly with the software app that, for now, give it a lower rating. First, good, it’s small, light, easy to setup and fast. It tracks shots quickly and accurately (compared to stats from my SkyTrak).Where the R10 fails is the iPhone (only!) app. First, there needs to be an iPad app to use the larger screen size. Next, the driving range functionality is limited. There are wonderful stats for each shot, but getting to those stats from the range view is a 3-click process, it’s terrible. Furthermore, only the default range features allows the iPhone screen to turn horizontally which is a must for indoor ranges with a screen projector. Even the very nice course-playing features (with LOTS of courses included) is vertical only, which limits the experience. MAKE THE SOFTWARE BETTER, FAST!Also, while the R10 picked up every one my swings (47 years old, 4 HCI, 95 mph swing speed), it missed a lot of my daughter’s 3W and driver swings (19 years old, college golfer, 85 mph swing speed). Not sure why, but I have videos capturing the problem.Overall, I really want to keep the R10 and sell my SkyTrak because I see the R10’s potential. It’s just not there yet. The software needs a major upgrade first. Maybe next year.
Have used it twice indoors and once outdoors so far. Indoors I feel the yardages are way off, I normally hit my 7iron around 155 (carry) and the Garmin has me consistently 133-143. Outdoors it was much closer to normal, around 145-155. I do like the shot tracer which I feel is accurate, I can tell when I hit the ball what it’s flight should look like and it’s spot on. I like the video playback of your swing, eye opening to see what your swing actually looks like. Mapping of your shots on the driving range is nice and the Par 3 challenge is interesting. Haven’t tried the simulator aspect yet, in fact I’ve only used a few of the many options and data collection metrics that are available. My intention is to use it mainly indoors during the winter. In a nutshell I guess, if you want to use it to know how far you hit the ball, it’s not very accurate. It does have other good qualities that make it not a complete waste of money.
