Like most people, since everyone has a smartphone in their pocket I was wondering if stand along GPS units were antiquated and redundant. However, there still may be a need for a stand alone GPS for longer trips, to save your smartphone battery from burning up, or to avoid cross border exorbitant data roaming fees. If this sounds like something you need, then this GPS will suit your needs. Your should know that the Garmin Drive 51LM is a solid but very basic GPS unit, with no bells and no whistles. Many of the standard smartphone features are left out from this unit, i.e.: no Bluetooth, no voice command, and the overall software experience feels laggy and somewhat antiquated. However, personally I missed these other features. Be forewarned that due to the lack of voice command, hands on use is required likely making use of this electronic device on the roadway illegal is most Canadian Provinces and U.S. States. My user experience was also mixed. The lag/ delay in pressed buttons was frustrating and tough to get used to. Also, perhaps not a common experience, but this GPS could not find 2 locations that I searched in moderately populated areas (note, my smartphone didn't have this problem for these locations). Conversely, the turn notifications and visuals on the larger screen were good.Overall, for the reasons stated above, if you need GPS mapping for a specific purpose (i.e.: long journey, cross border travel, limited data plan, etc.), then this very basic GPS will do the trick. Personally, this Garmin Drive 51LM will not replace the more often used smartphone app that I use, however it will be used on longer trips. However, I would opt for an upgraded unit that includes the now commonplace features of voice command and Bluetooth.

i bought this GPS, because an older one i had paid big bucks for bit the dust. i figured it would be basic, and not very good for $100. i was very pleasantly surprised!! i was in the beginning stages of a 6,000 mile cross country road trip i needed something to find hotels i had booked, places i intended to visit. It worked flawlessly out of the box!! better than my expensive old one!! it only failed me once, and it was a hotel that was just built. I'm sure if i had been able to update it beforehand it would have found that too!! I feel like the people who didn't like this GPS are expecting way too much from the device!! It's a $99 GPS!!!! But works so much better than the price lets on!! I highly recommend it, and would buy it again!! Oh and i had absolutely no trouble updating my unit, without giving any sort of special permissions for remote computer access. Garmin is a reputable company, have never had an issue with any of the people or products at this manufacturer.

First the cons: This feels "cheap". It is lightweight and plastic and the viewscreen is small. That explains the low price point. Also the only American English voices (Samantha and Michelle) sound like real dullards.Pros: We've owned several Garmin GPS devices over the years. This one combines all my favorite features from previous models, so I'm very happy with it.Summary: While the unit itself is not the highest quality, the software is. And you can't beat the price.

I have decided to upgrade my GPS since my old GPS was 10 years old with no map updates. After research, I settled on the Garmin Drive 51LM. It is very nice, easy to mount and dismount. The screen is nice and clear with many interesting features. However, I find the software problematic. Some of the warnings come through even though not selected. The most disturbing item is that the route selection/calculation is bizarre. I have tried the 2 selections, shortest route and fastest with similar results. Example 1:My destination is to my left and I should be stepping to the left, the GPS is sending me on a detour to the right. Example 2: My destination is in a strip mall to my left, the GPS is sending me to the right into a major mall parking lot, in a large circle to ... MoreI have decided to upgrade my GPS since my old GPS was 10 years old with no map updates. Example 3: Destination to the left on a side street, the GPS sends me past the street where I should turn and then U-turn to come back. All this within the first week, in other words everytime I use it. The only reason why I did not return it is because it is the highest rated one the Canadian Tire website and because it has free software/maps updates. I just keep hoping that someday soon, the software writers will do it right. It is actually worse than my old 10 year old GPS. I called Garmin to discuss the issues and ask if they had a great GPS and the representative said they are all pretty well the same.
Bought this after having a bad experience with a new Tomtom; what a mistake. Got it home and went to their website to download the software for my Mac. Software downloads and says it is successful but then crashes the first time it opens. Subsequent tries to open software produced a "Garmin Express is unable to connect to the background service and will close." error which kept happening. Uninstalled the software and the same things happened again. Opened my macbook air just in case it was my desktop computer causing the issue and the same errors happened again. I checked both computers to ensure they met their minimum standards and they do. I'll be returning this tomorrow and I returned a Tomtom the day before. Nobody makes products like they used it at all. Learn ... MoreBought this after having a bad experience with a new Tomtom; what a mistake. I will NEVER buy from JGS ever again. They sell USED products. The product was USED. I got a USED item. It was not a brand new item. It obviously was opened and resealed. Even the box where the round plastic seal showed fingernail scratches showing where the original seal was removed - please see picture. I opened the box and the product did not have the usual protective film on the screen surface.
A waste of money buying this. Extremely user unfriendly. Horrible interface, spent over 30 minutes trying to set it up but couldn't do most. Was told at the store it spoke the street name but it doesn't. When travelling I don't want to hear in 500 feet turn right - give me the name of the street. It told me to turn onto the train tracks instead of the street about 200 feet ahead - thanks for trying to injure me. For the price you pay, it is NOT worth it. Worst part, within an hour tried to return it & there is no return on open box. How can I see if I like it if I don't open? Total waste of my money, I almost threw it out the window on the way home. Horrible, horrible, absolutely horrible system. I regret the purchase & would never recommend Garmin to anyone. I ... MoreA waste of money buying this. Extremely user unfriendly. I have an older version of the Garmin GPS so I have to say that I was very impressed with the improvements they have made over the last 3 years. Love the touch screen as it is so easy to quickly touch a location. I like the "Recently found" feature too as I can just hit that and go to places I have visited previously without looking up the address again. Very pleased with added features such as touch screen, the ability to have the device beep if in a school zone or if I am going over the speed limit. Equally pleased that I can turn off many features if I do not want to use them. The best feature is the Garmin GPS tells me to turn at a specific area ie turn at ABC street then when I am within a couple hundred metres it will say turn at next stop lights which is an ... MoreI have an older version of the Garmin GPS so I have to say that I was very impressed with the improvements they have made over the last 3 years. The best feature is the Garmin GPS tells me to turn at a specific area ie turn at ABC street then when I am within a couple hundred metres it will say turn at next stop lights which is an excellent improvement from previous models as they would just say to turn in 200 metres and there would be confusion if there were more than one street close by. Telling me to turn at traffic lights lets me know exactly where I am turning. I also was thrilled at the customer service I received from Garmin's call centre assistance. The customer service agent was very knowledgeable about the product and asked me pertinent questions so he could help me set it up the way I wanted it. Way to go Garmin customer service!!! Overall I loved this product from its slim design to its clear voice directions and the easy way it mounts on my dash. Would I buy this product or recommend it to a friend? Definitely because it always gets me to where I am going and lets me know how long it will take me!
So, the reason I purchased this device was because I thought I lost my older GPS. I'm honestly awful at directions and I need a GPS device in my car. The Garmin Drive 51 LMT-S is even more robust than my older GPS (Nuvi 3490LMT) - details are more precise, directions are more accurately by the extra visual information in the screen, loads information faster while connecting to satellite link. The only drawback I can think of is when I type on the screen, it's a tad bit more difficult than my 3490's screen. Maybe it's just a matter of adjusting considering it's a new type of screen from the older device? Other than that, this GPS is definitely terrific (note: please stay away from those cheap under $100 GPS you see on Amazon; their update comes only once a year, ... MoreSo, the reason I purchased this device was because I thought I lost my older GPS. I'm glad I snatched it up while it was on sale.
I absolutely love this Garmin Drive 51 LM GPS. It is very accurate and reliable. It gives great directions and is not confusing like some others can be. It was able to find addresses that my last GPS couldn't find, even after updating it many times. The packaging was nice and compact with little waste and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. Setup was a breeze and I even updated a fun pack that made our vehicle into a red monster truck, which my kids loved! The amount of information in the GPS is amazing, not missing an animal crossing sign or business of any type. It was great to use on the 401 and got us to where we needed to be when we had no idea. I would definitely recommend this GPS as it is an awesome product that gets an A+ from me!
