Having had the old Garmin edge 1030 for some time I decided to take the plunge and invest in the next 1040 solar. I have not regretted it. A great new user interface has once again peaked my interest in using the decide to its full potential.The battery life is a thing to behold. On the old device I struggled to ride 100 miles without the thing running out. During my first week of owning the 1040 I road over 300 miles in the space of a week (half of it using navigation) without the need to charge the device - at the end of that week I still have over 50% charge!!Very happy indeed!And the quick service from Sigma Sports only served to enhance the overall experience.

I’ve had this for about a month now having used the 1030 plus for a while. I had a lot of sensor dropouts on my 1030 plus especially the Garmin radar but all sensors would drop out all at once whilst riding. This doesn’t seem to happen with the 1040 apart from the radar which will disconnect for a second and then reconnect immediately but all other sensors seem to stay paired through the ride. This is more than likely due to issues with Garmin software. User interface is different but not necessarily better as the 1030 still works fine but graphically is easier to read and has more customisation options. The solar aspect works as it should. Route calculation times are a lot quicker than the 1030 plus and the screen is better to use on the fly. Sending routes from my ... Garmin's power guide has definitely changed the way I ride. I simply don't do a ride without this thing anymore. Power guide will analyze your planned course and segment it according to the profile (ascend / descend). For every segment and based on your FTP (that it calculates) and effort scale that you can adapt, it recommends a power output. You'll need a power meter though, which is an extra cost.The major downside in my opinion is Garmin lack of support for it's both lights used together (headlight Varia UT 800 and RTL 515) I own both and you cannot operate both individually. This is unless you download a Connect IQ app "Smart Bike Lamps".

I was previously using an older Edge Explore for MTB and an Edge 1000 for road/training and bought the 1040 Solar to replace both.The training and navigation is a step up over both my old units and it works much better with Garmin Connect for routes etc. Particularly off-road. The built in maps are excellent and routing in general seems to be more reliable without the rerouting glitches the older units were prone to suffering.I went with the 1040 solar rather than the new 1050 because I do a lot of multi-day events and so far (on brighter summer days) without having to use power save mode, I haven't had to charge it once. The solar almost keeps up with usage and leaving it in bright light for a few hours switched off has been enough to fully charge after a ... It hasn't disappointed, it needed topping up once from a power bank on a 3 day trip of constant navigation, the solar charging being really impressive on the sunny 3rd day. There are so many features that I'm not sure I'll use them all, the workouts function is most likely the next I try.
Great computer when the GPS works. If you see "GPS Version 0.00" during the first couple weeks, exchange it with the store you bought it at (go to 'System,' 'About,' and 'Copyright Info' to see the version). If you wait to get a warranty replacement, Garmin sends you a recertified Edge. PS watch for Firmware Updates to see if it messes up the GPS.I like all the features - multiple profiles with customized screens and tiles on each screen. I like all the data I get with cadence and speed sensors. Are power pedals next?
I wanted a garmin for the added training insights over a wahoo, plus needed the larger screen size to aid reading prompts during a ride.I was nervous of returning to a touch screen garmin after previous poor experience (screen locking up at the first sign of rain). This has been a flawless experience after the first month of use.After a bit of getting used to the menus and personalising the widgets (weather, music, etc) I am really pleased with the performance, battery life is awesome and maps are brilliant to use.The unit itself feel very high quality, with an alloy case rather than plastic. It all looks and feels more modern and slick than my old Wahoo Roam

Solar charging works well when the unit is powered on and on the bike. It is supposed to charge even when off, but when I put it against my window, even on sunny days would only charge up 1%. However, when I finally took it for a ride, it went from 84% to 91% during 45 minute long ride with overcast weather. Solar charging feature was the main reason that I chose it over 1040, because it looks like I won’t have to charge it at all - it will charge itself while riding. I have SRAM wireless shifting and power meter on my bike and Garmin found them with ease. Power meter calibration reminder pops out before every ride (it has ... I have no issues with the use of the product; however, I have tons of issues with the product's power management. The solar charging is weak at best and the battery drain while riding is significant...25% in 1.5 hours in full sun. Will not charge off any DC charging block...requires very specific amp input. Also, once fully charged and unplugged and turned off, will turn on with the slightest movement and run the battery down to close to zero even when left in a sunny spot. Sadly, I am returning a product I had high hopes for.

I bought for solar feature and with UK touring in mind that's prob'ly the only technological marginal gain I could appreciate, and It replaces my Edge 810 which needs retiring after a decade of service. If that could have held on 'til a 840, or 540 was released I may have chosen one of those instead.Any road, I'll admit it needs a bit of a leap in mindset. And investment in peripherals. I don't have a power metre, or fitness watch/whoop, so most of the health stuff in Garmin Connect is useless: Resting Heart Rate, HRV, stress Score, Fitness Age - all unusable. If I keep this for 10 years also I may end up with a fitness watch and then toggle on a few more options, but for now it's almost justified as a investment in futureproofing.
