This unit is a hardware upgrade to the prior version. The screen is bigger and a bit more clear. It is slightly easier to manage moving through the screens. And, supposedly, the batteries last longer... I could not tell. However, the absence of a GPS map reduces it to being just an expensive emergency communication device. That is what it is. Garmin simply wants you to also by one of their GPS units. And the idea of pairing it with your iPhone in order to use the phone's touch keyboard and to see a real GPS map sounds great until you see how fast your phone battery drains. All in all, it is a step in the right direction by Garmin, but does not create a WOW! experience. If you want the "insurance" of having a means of communicating brief messages or an SOS anywhere ... So far it has been two days and they still can't activate this unit and they don't seem to be too concerned. Before I bought it I read reviews saying the customer service was terrible. I had a conversation with a rep saying everything was fine and it could all be managed online. Nope. Two days later it's not functional and no answers. We leave soon on our trip and this unit is not functioning and nobody gives a darn. Unfortunately I don't have time to source another unit so I guess I'll go without a safety transponder. Thanks Garmin. Last Garmin product I'll ever own and because this one has yet to be activated it will go back. Worst customer support in history.

Travel a great deal in the backcountry. This device was very easy to setup and activate. Activation does take sometime so make sure you do it before your trip.I can text message to any phone number as well as send emails. NOTE: People can only send texts and emails if I have sent them a message first. Messages are easy to do as you can pair the device to your smart phone or just type on the device.Weather updates take sometime (about 10 minutes) to come through. Still playing with the tracking. No maps on the device but you can download a map of North America to your phone.Plans are great as you can your plan up to 12 times in a year. This device worked well on my Alaskan Caribou hunt after a very rocky start. It had several versions older firmware when I got it. It would not sync. I tried everything - different cables etc. i also sent an email to Garmin support which was never replied to. Since it was Labor Day no phone support was available. Asked them to call me when they got in but they did not. Finally sfter going onto the inreach site and and entering some "fake" positioning it synced to the latest version of firmware and has worked flawlessly since. It was great to have this device deep in the tundra alone for 8 days. I love it. The issues with support and also the very flimsy micro usb connector are a serious concern. That aside I highly recommend it. I suggest that Garmin not sell any ... MoreThis device worked well on my Alaskan Caribou hunt after a very rocky start. I have been using this device for 2 years now. Mainly use it for text messages as I'm away from cell service for most of the summer. I only turn it on at set intervals to check for messages or send messages ( first thing in the morning and at 18:00). Battery life is fantastic using this method. Weather reports are accurate but take 10 minutes or more to come through. Make sure to sync the device before you leave home so you have the latest OS. I love being able to change my subscription to the lower monthly fee when I am not using the device as much. I have had no issues with this device in the last two years.
Love this model. The SOS button is hidden behind a hard cover so it can not be accidentally activated. Text messaging is very easy and can be done on the device itself or on your phone paired to the device. Messages are sent after a few minutes and you do get a confirmation that they have been received. You are also able to send email messages as well. Weather reports on two forms are also available for your location. Simple reports just give the temperature for the next 3 days.. Detailed reports give more detail and are for 7 days. Have had no issues with the device. It works very well and love the plan options available for using the device.Setup was very easy, but you must follow the directions step by step for it to work.
I’ve owned this for just barely two years and it’s no longer even turning on. It was working perfectly fine until it was plugged in for a recent software update. About half way through the update the device turned off and never turned back on. Not even the charging indication came on and a factory reset attempt did nothing. When I contacted Garmin about this they said there’s nothing they can do since it’s outside the 1 year warranty period. A device worth this much should last longer than 2 years and should be backed up with better product support and customer service.
I have had this Unit for several months now and have used it in remote locations in Canada and South America. The battery life is outstanding, even with the tracking feature on (10 minute intervals) for several days the draw on the battery was not significant. It syncs well with a cell phone for easier texting and mapping. Constant bluetooth connection do draw on the battery. Signal acquisition is great in open areas and less so under dense forrest cover. Weather forecasts are good but seem to cover less time time than promised. The unit seems to be well built and very robust. With the low cost plans, that require no contract, and can be suspended at any time and the access to GEOS this device is a game changer when compared to using a sat phone. The map-share ... The map-share feature works well and allows folks to keep track of you, if you wish. If you need voice coms then a Sat phone is a must, if not this device is your best choice for two way coms.
Since purchasing this device, I have been 100% satisfied with its ease of operation and dependability. Never has a message failed to go through. I have read several reviews where buyers complain about having to "data-point" each letter of a message, and that recipients must log into the Garmin InReach response platform to issue a reply. SO WHAT??? Remember why you buy this device: it is intended to allow communication using the Iridium Satellite Network from any location in the world. Literally, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, are there any cell towers around? Of course not. People lose site of the basic service that this unique device provides WHERE ALL OTHERS FAIL. Check your phone bill when you get home after sending a message on your American cell phone ... Literally, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, are there any cell towers around? Of course not. People lose site of the basic service that this unique device provides WHERE ALL OTHERS FAIL. Check your phone bill when you get home after sending a message on your American cell phone while standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, and you'll soon learn about international "roaming charges". I subscribed using the Garmin "Freedom Plan" and this device is VASTLY LESS EXPENSIVE BY COMPARISON! I find myself deferring to it now even when traveling in the United States. It's just that easy to use and that dependable. If you are a mariner or an international traveler, without question, buy this device for SAFETY sake. And remember... in a time of an international crisis such as 9/11, the cell phones will be one of the first forms of communication to be locked down. The Iridium Network could conceivably be your only long-distance operational method of emergency communications. Another word of advice: in addition to the Garmin InReach unit, I also travel with Motorola MURS-frequency 2-watt radios. If you got separated from your loved ones, those frequencies could also save the day for you. Have fun when you travel, but be prepared for the unexpected.
An almost indispensable aid in the backcountry; and great for anywhere in the world where you want to track and communicate when there is no cellular service. But when Garmin took over from DeLorme, the inReach Sync application for countless of us became a nightmare. This worthless application basically bricks your device from updates and syncing. Note: I have the DeLorme inReach. However, internet searches verify that even the upgraded devices cannot sync, especially with Mac computers. Beware: you may not be able to sync or update any firmware until Garmin gets their act together.
