The unit is supplied with a Hema Rasta and a basic Garmin map, you can get better and more accurate mapping on your iPhone. I really loved the mounting and functionality of the unit but was very disappointed in mapping data. I ended up buying additional mapping software (Hema & Garmin Topo) for an additional $300 just to make the units mapping data just under par of a Hema HX1 (which is half the price!). My recommendation is DO NOT buy this unit until Garmin & Hema work out a better deal and install Hema explorer & garmin aus Topo on this unit. I understand the unit is awesome in the US as Garmin has better supported US mapping then they do in Australia. You have been warned aussies.

This is a really good device for a traveller like me as it gives me the ability to take the roads less traveled. But in order to do that one must have the patience to plan the route well in advance and learn to use Garmin explore. Coming off of using Google maps it may be a bit cumbersome to get your head around some of the navigation features but all in all very intuitive. I feel the maps have some rendering issues. There is a bit of lag while trying to zoom into an area. Having had locus maps for most part (the maps load really, really fast in comparison) I feel Garmin can do a bit more to optimise the speed of rendering and make it faster, given the dedicated flagship hardware I would expect a faster load time. Another thing I noticed is this device still runs on Android 6.0.1 which is a huge negative given the flagship specs (this could explain the rendering being slow) Zooming in and out to view an alternative route can be quite daunting but not a deal breaker, you eventually learn it. Don't really need network, just being under the sky is all you need to do to get connected and navigate where you want. Happy with the purchase. Postage however took a while as it was posted using standard parcel Post with signature (I was expecting express), I may have chosen this at checkout but given the price I had to wait quite a while to have the device in my hands. The reason I give it 4 stars is the device needs improvement in terms of OS and rendering speed only, everything else is above and beyond. JA service and support is impeccable, thank you!

This was a replacement vehicle GPS. It's ability to save tracks is a great feature when you don't spend too much time on roads and make your own tracks. It feels robust enough to withstand the conditions I often experience (the last GPS did not). It is less accurate for regional road maps but that is not a major issue if you record your tracks (you can always backtrack). Many of the places I visit are not covered by mobile phone coverage so the "connectivity" features are not a huge part of my use of this GPS. However, this unit fits my bill of a large screen vehicle GPS that can be used in remote travel.

Very nice piece of kit and happily installed in our fire truck. Easy to use and intuitive, especially if you have previously used Garmin GPS's. Only downside is that by the very nature of who we are (a Rural Fire Brigade) most of our driving is off road and the standard topo maps lack detail when you zoom in. Happy to pay for a SD card with 1:25k topo but this has a different OS (Android) and they need porting. Request put into Garmin for this port but nothing heard. Would also be good to be able to navigate to a given 6 figure UTM map but this is a nice to have as well. Overall pretty pleased.
The device and how it works is great and i believe Garmin is on to something with it. However, it is very lacking with the real world R&D. Firstly the unit is big and only comes with a window suction mount and a ball for RAM mount. Window mount is useless as the unit is really too big to be placing on the window, also when you do it bounces around off road. This leaves you with no choice but to source a RAM mount system that will work. However, dont think you can then run a RAM mount and put the unit in portrait mode as it only works in the Hema maps not the Garmin maps, this being the case you are forced to use the unit in landscape mode, to which is very limiting when mounting due to the size. Tan surround looks terrible and stands out like mud on a white sheet. ... MoreThe device and how it works is great and i believe Garmin is on to something with it. Simply Garmin have hit a gold with the idea but seem to have put on the market before real world testing. Sorry Garmin wish I didn't purchase.
This unit is my latest added to my collection, and is pretty amazing to use and deal with ease. Still learning its full potential in all conditions, however it is better than expected. The downside is that it does lose a lot of the old ways Garmin would that would work well, like adding voices or vehicles to suit your desire, as it locks its folders , which I find quite irritating. Really why take that out? It also is useless connecting with the app "Base Camp" in which I have grown to love, I mean; its a log of where I have been over the years, using all the Garmin units put together. So if you are new to the Garmin it is indeed a rewarding experience and if you are in for the long haul then you will know they add, subtract and mess with cables. We currently run Hemma HN7 units in our work vehicles but continue to have various issues with these units. We were looking at a more reliable 4WD navigator when our existing units needed replacement. The quality and ruggedness of the Garmin Overlander impressed us. Time will tell though.
This item does work. It has some serious issues which could easily be fixed with a firmware update. 1. When switching on it defaults to the 'explore' map. It should switch on in the same mode that was being used before it went to sleep. 2. In the drive mode, It does not remember the choices one selects for what appears on the map so this needs to be done each time. 3. If you purchase additional, more detailed, HEMA maps, they appear in the 'drive' view instead of the 'explore' view. 4. Contacting Garmin support gets you 'form letter' type responses instead of responses that actually address the issues you are asking about. 5. In the explore view, the unit beeps with alerts that do not show up in this view. The alerts are not spoken alerts, but rather require you to ... MoreThis item does work. Overall, not worth the money. Poorly programmed. Better off with something like GAIA gps on a tablet or mobile phone.
Off the bat it has to be pointed out that this IS a very expensive unit for what really is just an Android tablet with a bright screen and Garmin's navigation apps sitting on top. This is really apparent when navigating through the menus and switching between on-road and off-road maps - there are inconsistencies between in the GUI, and each app has its own map update settings, as an example. Localisation is baffling too, where you must set metric measurements multiple times, and yet barometric pressure can't be set in metric. For the price, I would expect it to be more polished and better integrated. It's also somewhat disappointing that the Hema off-road maps are not as detailed as if you bought Hema topo maps from say Memory-Map, and with no option to download ... It's also somewhat disappointing that the Hema off-road maps are not as detailed as if you bought Hema topo maps from say Memory-Map, and with no option to download third party maps, I'll continue to use an iPad for detailed maps. Another disappointment is features like Garmin SmartPhone Link don't work with this device. Why is this important? The bundled Traffic Receiver (which the Johnny Appleseed site says isn't included), is next to useless and the over the air updates it provides are hit and miss at very best. With the Garmin SmartPhone Link app linked to my Zumo 396 provides much better traffic updates and better aids at routing around traffic jams exceeding 10km long, where the bundled Traffic Receiver didn't even show the jam at all. There are positives, the screen is very bright, the device is very fast compared to my Zumo 396, and for on-road mapping, has a very familiar interface. Having reversing camera functionality built in is also a major positive, but as I bought my device on sale, I don't know that I could justify paying $999 for a device that doesn't allow installing 3rd party maps.
When first using this device and traveling from the GC to Gympie. The device went kept going into sleep mode. I thought it was a power supply issue. We rang Jonny Appleseed and they were very helpful as they confirmed my thoughts. It turned out that the unit even though attaching itself to the magnetic mount was ever so slightly resting on the dash carpet. That was enough to intermittently disconnect it from the power supply. I raised the mount slightly and it has been fine ever since. Purely my fault.
