Garnier is that one brand that made me realize that often, all you need to do is scour your friendly neighborhood drugstore to find effective, but reasonably-prized skin products. \n\nMy skin is oily to combination, and very much susceptible to clogging, impurities, and blackheads. That’s why the Garner PureActive Intensive 3-in-1 charcoal anti-blackhead scrub is perfect for me. It is 3-in-1 in two ways: firstly, you can use it as facial wash, as facial scrub, or as facial mask. Secondly, it purifies, unclogs resistant blackheads, and to neutralizes shine. For a single product to be so versatile yet particular enough to target your usual oily skin problem is a great thing. For a single product to be so versatile yet particular enough to target your usual oily skin problem is a great thing. Not only does it simplify your routine, you also get the most use for your purchase. \n\nIt contains charcoal, blueberry extract, and salicylic acid, with the last ingredient being your ultimate friend if your pores are susceptible to clogging. \n\nI personally think it smells amazing (a little musky but still very clean), but if you are particularly sensitive to scented products, you might have to consider whether it is something you can tolerate, more so because it lingers for a while even after washing. Its consistency is quite smooth and watery compared to other charcoal masks, but this does not pose too much of a problem when applied. One trick I’ve discovered to minimize mess is to squeeze quite a thick amount on your fingertips and then apply it on your face by spreading it evenly. It dries up rather quickly too, which is good if you’re concerned about leaving a mess on your sink. It is also easy to wash off.\n\nBecause it contains salicylic acid, you may want to consider how to best use it depending on where your skin falls in the oiliness spectrum. I’ve found that because my problem area is really my t-zone, using it as a daily scrub has helped minimize blackheads. As a mask, I've also noticed the oiliness on my chin has been reduced. All in all, I’d recommend this product.\n

I really enjoyed this product. I have an oily skin type which is prone to blackheads and acne, so a product like this is perfect.\n\nI used this product as a mask twice a week. I would not recommend using this as a daily wash for oily skin types, as it physically exfoliates the skin too often. This would cause dehydration and ultimately more oil production. To use as a mask, I would take a pea size amount onto my fingertips and rub it evenly over my face. A little bit of this product goes a long way! I would then leave it for 5 minutes and remove it. A con is that this product makes quite a mess when removing over a sink. \n\nThis product left my skin feeling clean and smooth. I do feel that if I leave it on for longer than 5 minutes it strips my skin slightly, making it tight and shiny. The salicylic acid really minimized the appearance of pores and worked well to remove blackheads. I found that I was also producing less oil on my skin with consistent use. \n\nI believe this is more of a 2 in 1 product because there is no real difference between using it as a scrub or face wash - you'd be exfoliating your skin regardless. It also has quite a strong fragrance, so if you have sensitive skin you need to be cautious. I would recommend using this for oily and oily combination skin types. \n

What first attracted me to this product was that is was charcoal based product and as an oily skinned lady that appealed to me greatly. I’m also a big fan that it’s a multi use product. I wouldn’t necessarily classify the cleansing and scrubbing functions as two separate properties because you’re going to be doing both regardless of which you choose to emphasise, but I did like that you could make it a mask.\nIf I’m giving my honest opinion I would say it’s an average cleanser at best. The beads in the scrub aren’t too harsh (pretty mild actually), but I still wouldn’t want to risk to using this everyday if you have sensitive skin. I couldn’t say that my skin was any better or any worse after using this compared to others out there on the market. I mean my skin didn’t react negatively to it and this product does clean your skin, but there are definitely better ones out there. The mask does does draw out some of the dirt in your pores, but again I’ve had better results from other masks. \nI found it to be a little messy to use. Putting it on is fine, but when I wash it off the dark water seems to go everywhere. Maybe I’m just a messy washer, but I don’t seem to have this trouble with other products. \nI like using this to take off my makeup and as a precursor to my other cleanser. I will definitely keep using this and use up the tube I have, but if you’re looking a really good cleaner/scrub/mask there are better options out there. \n

This is one of those products that I like but it doesn't scream YES to me. I have oily/combo skin and I felt it did a good job at minimising my oiliness after use, that's the only big thing screaming at me that I truly like. Now, I'm not saying this product didn't remove dirt, leftover makeup or other nasties from my skin but I feel it could have been more effective. As a charcoal and anti-blackhead wash I thought it'd do a better job at keeping my impurities at bay, however, I saw my skin at its worst while using this product. My hormones were all over the place and they really affected my skin and breakouts but there are plenty of other products I've previously used that have been able to combat this. Another con is the application being quite messy and I mean I get it everywhere and after using my fingers to apply to my face I'm left with charcoal marks covering my hands instead of a slight residue. It's not a big issue as I use it while I shower but it is something to mention. I'm not saying throw out this product never use it (cause I know I still am using it) but there are other drugstore and even other Garnier washes that may be more effective for you instead of this. If this isn't for you, you might be better off trying the sensitive anti-blemish garnier wash which was a much better product for me personally.

Such an interesting little product this one as it is able to be used as a wash, a scrub and a mask.... i do personally find it best and easiest to simply use as a scrub but that might be personal preference.\n\nthe colour of this is a deep charcoal that is quite disconcerting when first used. it seems like it is going to stain everything, the shower floor, your fingers, under your nails, your face.... but it doesn't! I'm excited to see the results continue.\n\n

The product was dark grey coloured due to the charcoal, this unfortunately does stain white towels if you do not wash every single bit of product off. The product was also very fragrant, I am not actually a big fan of the smell, it was very off putting. Initially I was worried that the strong perfume would make my sensitive skin react. After a patch test it seemed fine but after a couple weeks of use I did find it stung any dry skin around my nose. Looking at the ingredients I was hopeful that it would help my acne because it contains salicylic acid and also contains charcoal which are proven to benefit the skin. My first use of the product was hopeful I noticed that it did help to reduce some of the many blackheads on my face and in turn make my pores look less visible. The smell of the product almost made me gag. After repetitive use for a couple weeks I didn’t notice any changes to my skin, the product did not help with acne and I believe that it was too harsh to be used as a daily cleanser. The grainy texture of the product means it is a good exfoliant but seemed to be somewhat drying on my skin after everyday use. \n\nAlthough the product is 3-in-1 I did not use it as a mask. The fragrance was too unbearable to be left on my face for 5 minutes whilst waiting for the mask to work its magic. The 3-in-1 is also a bit of a stretch, when using the product the ‘wash’ and ‘scrub’ use were exactly the same. \n\nI would not recommend this product to those with sensitive skin or dry/cracked skin as the strong perfumes will most likely irritate your skin. The product would be suited for those looking to reduce the appearance of blackheads. \n

I found trialling this product to be interesting, as I had no idea what to expect from a product that claims to be ‘3-in-1’. After using the Garnier Pure Active Charcoal 3-in-1 for about a month, in all of the three capacities, I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of the product. Firstly, I found the product to have a very strong, very odd scent that is reminiscent of some sort of cheap minty lolly. So strong is the menthol/minty scent, that I found that it stung my eyes, especially when applying as a mask. No matter how you use the product, the scent is quite strong, and it has the same warming tingly/slightly burning/stinging sensation, although this is intensified when using as a mask. No matter how you use the product, the scent is quite strong, and it has the same warming tingly/slightly burning/stinging sensation, although this is intensified when using as a mask. I don’t mind, because the sensation is mild, and it feels as if the product is working effectively. The packaging is just a simple plastic squeezy tube, that is quite uni-sex in appearance. \n\nUsing this as a wash, I have to say that I find it to be too harsh for an everyday use. I also fail to differentiate between using this as a wash or a scrub. There is no way to use this product with no exfoliation. It does not foam, which I like, because my skin is sensitive to a lot of foaming agents. When mixed with water on damp skin, the texture changes from a gritty gel to a milky grainy consistency. If using this as a ‘wash’, this product will last quite a while, as you do not need much. It does not effectively remove makeup, nor does it seem to clean my skin very effectively.\n\nAs a scrub, I enjoyed the product quite a bit. Although it is not the most effective scrub I have ever used, it is a very decent scrub for the price tag. I only used this as a scrub 2-3 times a week, as it is too harsh for everyday use. After removing my makeup, and washing my face with my regular cleanser, using this as a scrub to exfoliate and get right into my pores I found to be quite effective. The addition of salicylic acid and citric acid seemingly helped my skin stay relatively clear during the Christmas/New Year period of indulgence, although in no way did I see a complete improvement.\n\nMy favourite way to use with was a mask. I found it to do the job of purifying my skin, as well as smoothing and exfoliating. I also found that it helped to shorten the life of any breakouts. I did find that using it as a mask used quite a large quantity of the product. I found myself having to repeatedly squeeze out more product in order to get an even coverage over my face, or even just my t-zone. When washing the mask off, if I just applied a little water and massaged my skin before rinsing, I found that it was as good as using it as a scrub. The claim of having removed up to 96% of excess oil is only temporary, and in my opinion, exaggerated. The result is not long lasting, and I still got quite oily during the day after using this. The effect of excess oil removed is seemingly only immediately after use. Although it was not mentioned as a use, I have used this as an overnight spot treatment, which was reasonably effective, and I will continue to use it but nowhere near miraculous.\n\nImmediately after any of the ‘three’ uses, my skin did feel softer and smoother. It also felt oil free, but for my combination skin it left my skin feeling too dry and tight, and I felt the need to lather on moisturiser. If I did not moisturise after use, my skin would end up dry and flakey, but still oily and shiny (go figure!?). While it did improve breakouts and blackheads, I didn’t see any drastic improvement. I think an oily/very oily skin type with a few occasional blemishes and some blackheads would be most suited to this product. I would not recommend this to those with sensitive skin types, or sensitive to fragrance or harsh exfoliants. I will continue to use the product, and overall, I do like it. I do not love it. There are better products on the market, for each of the ’three’ uses. In my opinion, the Garnier Pure Active Charcoal 3-in1 tries to do too much. By trying to be every step in your skincare routine, it fails excel in any of the ’three’ uses, and is only consistently mediocre, aside from being a terrible idea of an acceptable everyday, or even twice daily facial 'wash'. I wish I had enjoyed this more, as the concept sounds great, and would be very convenient for travel. \n

I bought this for my son who works on a jobsite, getting dirty, dusty and grimey .. most days. He complained he noticed blackheads around his nose and creases so I bought this from the local Coles store. It wasn't too expensive and had no idea if it would work for him or not. After a few days of use, it was me that actually noticed his skin had become bright, smooth and clear! He still uses it to this day. He is wrapped with the results needless to say .. I'm the best Mum ever! ;) [brand:influenster]

First impressions aren’t always right

Not to start off negative, but when I originally used this product my skin went insanely flakey - and I didn’t even have super dry skin. So obviously I tossed it away somewhere and never looked back. Over the period of time where the mask was never to be found I was moisturising daily and just elevating my skin care routine in general. Then one day I stumbled on this again and decided to give it another shot. Genuinely one of the best decisions I’ve made because the scrub is absolutely phenomenal. It’s practically become a staple for me, and I use it every one or two days. Personally, the scrub is the best out of three because it makes your skin feel baby smooth and the tiny granules help exfoliate your skin without tearing or stripping your skin away - which is always a plus. So I highly highly highly recommend this product to anyone who has OILY TO COMBINATION SKIN and also has PAST EXPERIENCE WITH SKINCARE. If you’re looking for a first time scrub or wash maybe this isn’t for you, and you should probably try something lighter. Also make sure you MOISTURISE IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS because it helps retain the moisture your skin needs after exfoliating. The product is rated a 4, only issue being the harshness of it to the skin when it’s being focalised on the T-Zone area.
