GearWrench Point XL Gearbox Double Box Ratcheting Metric Wrench Set - 12 Piece
The GEARWRENCH XL GearBox double box ratcheting wrenches feature a non-ratcheting box end for breaking loose stubborn fasteners and a ratcheting box end to make quick work of loosening and tightening fasteners without having to remove the wrench. The wrenches are up to 40% longer than our standard double box ratcheting wrenches providing more access and strength to fasteners. The ratcheting box end is designed to need as little as 5° to move fasteners versus 30° for standard wrenches. The wrenches are made from a strong alloy steel with a bright, full polish chrome finish. The ratcheting box end features off-corner loading for a better grip on the fastener and reduces fastener rounding. The 0° offset on both ends and slim profile of the wrench provides greater access to fasteners in the tightest spaces. The 85988 is a 12 piece metric set that includes sizes 8 mm to 19 mm and comes with a tray for storage and organization.

At $116 plus tax at the time, I was taking a leap buying these. However, I realized that ~$9.00/ wrench is not a bad deal at all for something quality, and I have had good fortune with gear wrench products in the past. I work as a mechanic and use these at least every other day, and I like them a lot. The longer than normal size is a plus, and I was contemplating buying flex head wrenches of the same style, however the straight design and fewer moving parts makes them more robust. Another plus is that there are no skipped sizes- a common pet peeve of mine when buying metric tools. I have not had an issue with these so far and I would definitely buy these again!! I do recommend keeping the ratcheting mechanism as clean as possible after a long day of work, because I ... MoreAt $116 plus tax at the time, I was taking a leap buying these. I absolutely love these wrenches. The set I received was made in Taiwan. A set of wrenches from Gearwrench I received about 1-2 years ago was China made, and the wrenches are absolutely horrible. These wrenches are more like the older Gearwrench ratchets, a quality and straight wrench. Straight is no joke, the China wrenches often came with a banana type shape when looking at the end-to-end.I have three Craftsman 26 inch toolboxes. Nothing professional, but I am a DIYer and have no need for the more expensive boxes. The tray the wrenches come in is about 1/2 inch too long to fit vertically in the drawers. The issue exists with all three of them, from an old 80s style, to the 75th anniversary box to a normal about 2000-ish box. This has no impact on wrench ... MoreI absolutely love these wrenches. This has no impact on wrench performance though, so I did not even reduce a star for this. The wrenches themselves are great. The non ratcheting box ind has very thin walls, which if it were not for a lifetime warranty, I would complain about. I do see this helpful in allowing access in the very tightest of spaces. For the reason I purchased this, and I Am sure the reason most others are looking at this, the length of the wrenches is about perfect. I have worked on a few Asian cars now where the bolts are very close to the fenders or other parts of the car. It makes getting a socket and ratchet in there nearly impossible. The length and offer of the non ratcheting box end make this a perfect wrench in those situations. If you need wrenches that provide greater access due to length, give these a shot.

I have the Metric & SAE sets in both regular and extended sizes. I am trying very hard to like these wrenches, but overall maybe I am too much of a tool snob to be in love with them. I will provide a pro/con (this applies to all the Gearwrench (GW) long ratcheting double box wrench sets): PROS: 1) Reasonable price 2) Good chrome and finish 3) Nice holder (fits in tool box drawers perfectly) 4) Overall, seems to work OK CONS: 1) Wrenches are just not thick or strong enough. They bend and flex all over the place (especially the smaller sizes under about 17mm) and this can be very unnerving if you value your body parts. 2) Fit is not the best. This series of GW's has more slop in the fixed box end than ANY of the box ends on my other 12 point wrenches (I have Proto, ... MoreI have the Metric & SAE sets in both regular and extended sizes. This series of GW's has more slop in the fixed box end than ANY of the box ends on my other 12 point wrenches (I have Proto, SK, Heyco, Wright, Dewalt, & Wera besides GW). 3) I am having a very hard time believing these wrenches are forged correctly or made from quality steel. I have some pretty nice wrench sets and they all ring out when struck, except for these double box GW's. Though not scientific, it seems like ringing is a sign that the part is stiff and has been heat treated properly. I wonder if these GW's are either made by another method (e.g., casting, sintering, etc.), or just use crappy soft steel (possibly why they flex so much). These double boxes just go "tink" when you strike them on another metal surface. They do not ring out and to me this is a sign that GW cheaped out on these particular wrenches. I have other GW regular combination wrenches that do "ring out" when struck...so it is really just a complaint about these double box sets and not the entire GW line. 4) Returned 2 sets for bent wrenches out of the box...poor quality control. But, I have also had this problem with the "premium" brands as well. If GW would make these have a thicker beam and better tolerance on the fixed non-ratcheting box end...they would really be a great set of wrenches. As is...only 3 stars. I want the Snap On sets of non-ratcheting long zero degree double box wrenches...but they are simply too expensive for a DIY person like myself ($600 for both Metric & SAE sets).
Ever since I got my first set of GearWrench ratcheting wrenches, I've been greatly impressed with their high quality and thoughtful design features. This 12-piece set of extra-long pattern metric double box ratcheting wrenches is no exception. It includes wrenches from 8 to 19 mm in 1 mm increments made of chromed vanadium steel. The ratcheting box end uses their patented "surface drive" design that helps prevent bolt heads from rounding over. These wrenches are up to 40% longer than standard box wrenches so you can reach a hard-to-reach nut or bolt head with less pain and strain. Some other manufacturers make great tools, but their storage cases are poorly designed and you can't get the tool out easily. Not so with GearWrench. This particular set is made in Taiwan, but is comparable in quality to any American made product.

The boxes are of 12 point design. The finish is always good, and the strength is fine as well.I like that they organize their wrenches in flat trays that can be placed right into a toolbox drawer, or hung on a wall. They won’t come loose if shaken upside down. Nice.An added benefit is that you’re buying a complete set with no missing sizes in-between.These were compared to a similar set from Snap-On and we found that these are longer and therefore give better leverage. With the strong construction of them, they will not break when applying this added leverage. That makes them a better buy than the competition.A professional mechanic's review rated them at least as good as any other brand.Overall Thoughts:If you’ve come to really like the GearWrench tools, you’ll love these, even if a little more expensive.
GearWrench Extra Long Pattern Metric GearBox Ratcheting Wrench Set (12-Piece) - a Home Depot Seeds Program ReviewI was looking for a ratcheting box wrench for a project I was working on and realized that, despite having lots of ratchet sockets, I didn’t have any box wrenches. The range in length from 22cm (8 5/8 inches) for the 8mm to 39.5cm (15.5 inches) for the 19mm wrench. This is considerably longer than the identically sized GearWrench Combination set which range from 14cm for the 8mm and 14.7cm for the 19mm wrench. The extra length lets you get into some far reaching spots and provides greater torque. This comes at the expense of not being able to get into some tight spots and the greater torque may mean sheared bolts.I have several GearWrench tools and have had no issues with them. The wrenches are maufactured in Taiwan from some sort of alloy steel and the finish on them is full polish chrome. The sizes are etched in very heavily so you’ll be able to read them even after significant abuse. The packaging says there’s a lifetime warranty on them but I didn’t look into what that entails. The come in a hard plastic case with the sizes marked on the slots as well. The case does not have a lid and acts more like a rack that keeps them visible and locked well into place if you need to carry them around. There’s no reverse lever on these wrenches so you need to turn the wrench over to loosen/tighten a nut. The ratchet has a very light action which I really like since you don’t need to have the nut or bolt tightened very much for the ratchet to work. The ratchet also has 72 teeth so it will operate in as little as five degrees. I’m not sure what the material is for the actual ratchet but it’s a different material than the wrench material. It didn’t scratch and it seems pretty sturdy so I don’t expect them to fail. There’s no offset on either the ratcheting box end or the standard box end but on the standard end the box protrudes slightly from the handle for a little better access. This is a pretty good set of wrenches if you want two box ends with only one end ratcheted. They’re well etched with their sizes, the alloy steel used has worked well in other GearWrench tools I have, the polished chrome finish is attractive and the carrying case locks the wrenches in well. The action on the 72 tooth ratchet is light and will loosen and tighten nuts and bolts that are only lightly finger tightened. The extra length provides great additional torque and allows for use in some very hard to reach spots. I like the set and will be making use of it. I normally like having some offset on the ends which should certainly be possible with the non-ratcheted end but with no reverse lever, doing so on the ratcheted end would be inconvenient.
I got these as part of the SEEDS evaluation program. I have combination Gear Wrenches in SAE sizes up to 1", but not metric, so these were a score. These are what you'd expect for typical Gear Wrench quality, nicely made with polished chrome plated finish. They are also long pattern, which is a plus. What I had a problem with was they had no offset at either end. This is not typical of most combination wrenches, there is usually a small angle at the box end so you can torque from the open end without busting knuckles. And these are ratcheting wrenches, they are going to get swung back and forth, they are designed for it. But their side profile is as straight as a Kansas country road. This is an extra long metric double box end 12 point wrench set with one side that ratchets. Overall this is a good set of metric wrenches. I tightened a torque wrench into a vice with different size hex sockets on it and tested the wrenches to see how much torque they could handle. The 19mm ratcheting mechanism was able pull against 150 ft lbs without any damage to the wrench. When I tried the 16mm ratcheting mechanism it too was able to pull against 150 ft lbs but after the test I realized the ratcheting mechanism was frozen. Fortunately, I was able to flip the wrench over and pull the opposite direction on the ratchet mechanism and it broke loose and began functioning properly again. I did not test the smaller sizes against the torque wrench as I feared I might permanently break the mechanisms. The extra length of the wrenches and the extra wide surface on the fixed box end make it easy to break loose nuts and fasteners. The ratcheting mechanism with five degree movement is very helpful for working in confined spaces. The kit includes 12 wrenches from 8mm to 19mm in 1mm increments. The fixed end and the ratcheting end are the same size and there is no offset on the ends. Etching on the wrenches for size and part number is deep and easy to read.I have two concerns with the set. First, the blow molded case is only a tray (i.e.: no lid) with no carrying handle so the wrenches can come loose during transportation and there is no easy way to carry them. The tray does feature tabs that can be popped out to screw to the wall but only on one end. Second, there are grind marks on every wrench near the fixed box end. Whatever polishing process they use at the factory is missing this area. It is not so noticeable that it detracts from the look of the wrench but it does make me wonder if this area will be susceptible to rusting.
Tools a craftsman will take pride in. Finely finished forgings. Easy to keep clean. Slim profile and excellent balance. Five degree ratchet allows plenty of maneuverability in tight spaces. (A three degree feature is available in flex-head wrenches by the same manufacturer.) The XL pattern reaches confined fasteners. Often handy in congested engine bays, confined transmission tunnels and about congested chassis. Also highly useful on fixed motor bases and nut-on-stud leveled base plates. The original packaging is useful in ones roll cab drawer. Most common sizes are included in the set. 24 and 25mm XL wrenches are available separately. The corner-loading socket pattern is less likely to round fasteners than do open ends and flat style sockets. One can use the non-ratcheting end for aggressively loosening stubborn fasteners.
