Gibson SG Special - Ebony

$1,877.86

(245 reviews)

The SG Special returns to the classic design that made it relevant, played and loved -- shaping sound across generations and genres of music. This early 60's style SG Special has the vibe and sound heard on countless classic rock recordings. The comfortable, slim taper mahogany neck and bound rosewood fingerboard is well known for fast, effortless playing. The two P-90 pickups are noted for their fat, snarl when driven and for their smooth, sweetness when played clean. The SG Special is equipped with the 3-way toggle switch, handwired controls and orange drop capacitors. P-90 Single Coil Pickup Legendary Tone First introduced in the early 1950s, Gibson's legendary P90 single coil pickup produced a raw powerful tone that helped define the blues and rock and roll in their formative years. Today, the P90's traditional combination of high output and brilliant tone is still considered a favorite among many top musicians. Known by such familiar nicknames as the "Soapbar" and the "Cobalt," the P90 still cuts through any type of music, all while displaying amazing tonal sensitivity for everything from blues and rock to mellow jazz riffs. It's perfect as a vintage replacement, and features vintage, braided two-conductor wiring. It's also fully wax potted to eliminate any chance of unwanted microphonic feedback.

Beware the neck and beware the return policy if you use easy pay

Overall:First off, this is a nice guitar and there's nothing wrong with the workmanship. I grew up on Sabbath and SG's. I was REALLY excited to buy this guitar. I couldn't play the Epiphone Iommi signature because it had the wide flat D shaped neck like a '61 and it doesn't fit my hands. This was advertised as being based on his '65 that had a rounded profile (I own 2 SG's with this profile and LOVE them) so I immediately paid $2400 cash on my easy pay account in good faith and ordered it. Beautiful guitar. Probably sounds great but I never even plugged it in because as soon as I pulled it out of the case I felt that super wide flat '61 neck and knew I'd never play it. Disappointed to say the least my dream guitar turned out to be something it wasn't supposed to be, I immediately called to see about sending it back. I was told I'd have to pay shipping (which I would have done since the misleading advertising was on Gibson's part and not theirs) and they wouldn't refund my cash and reinstate my account the way it was, basically just giving me store credit instead. I looked it up and that technically follows their policy. I suppose I can't fault that, I own a lot of gear now I wouldn't have otherwise if it weren't for that plan. It's just disappointing to say the least, especially right on the heels of the disappointment of the guitar. Anyway, if you like the '61 Special you'll probably love this guitar; it's clearly a fine instrument. If you think you're gonna get a '65 rounded neck profile you'll wind up like me choosing between having a $2400 painting hanging on your wall or the hassle of selling it on Reverb. My low rating is not for the quality of the guitar but because it isn't as advertised which means a lot more in these times when you can't go to a store and try before you buy on a lot of gear. You just have to roll the dice. Who knows, maybe mine was an aberration and they accidentally stuck the wrong neck on it and you'll have better luck. Just be careful.

Great guitar but the color is off.

I purchased this guitar about a year ago from Musician's Friend. It's really great. I love the bridge/tailpiece, the plek'ed neck. It's well worth the money and I highly recommend it.The only problem is that the color shown here is NOT faded Pelham Blue ... it's dark Pelham Blue with a twist of turquoise. And, I own three faded Pelham Blue Gibsons and this guitars color doesn't even come close. I did not return the guitar because it played well and the action was excellent. However, again, it's not faded Pelham Blue as advertised.

Great guitar!!! Definitely has that P-90 attack and snarl. Sounds great clean, and with overdrive. The controls on mine work great. Volume and tone is smooth and even, 10-0. I like my string action nice and low with just a tad of neck relief. I had no issues setting this one up just the way I like it, and with no string buzz. The wraparound compensated bridge was easy to adjust and surprisingly, the intonation is great. The reason for the 4 stars is due to cosmetics. The first one I ordered had unacceptable defects in the body wood which include two quarter sized indentations right by the bridge, a very sloppy neck joint where the sides of the fingerboard meets the body, and sloppy binding. Also, the fingerboard was stained which leaves your fingertips black after ... MoreGreat guitar!!! Definitely has that P-90 attack and snarl. Sounds great clean, and with overdrive. Overall happy with the gibson sg special. You can see on the guitar theres a couple of minor marks from the gibson factory. Nothing major. The string alignment is a little off. But dont mind. The low E string is closer to the top of the neck. I use my thumb alot so works out. If it was the other way around I might of sent it back. The electrics look good under the hood. Musicstore got the guitar very quickly to Ireland. Really good service with great updates. Very happy with the purchase:)

I am astonished at how quiet the P90's are in this SG. The hum is negligible -- substantially less than the high gains in my Rickenbacker and only barely more the Lace Sensors in my strat (which are 99% silent). I had anticipated ordering some hum-canceling Lindy's to go in there, but that won't be happening. These sound phenomenal. They're just about all I could ever want from a pickup. The guitar came with the neck set almost completely straight. Just a smidge of relief (the perfect amount, really). Fretwork is essentially perfect. No sharp ends, frets are perfectly even and well-polished. The action was set a bit high, but was fairly easy to remedy. So why 4 stars instead of 5?The lower set screw (high E side) on the lightning bar wraparound bridge arrived ... MoreI am astonished at how quiet the P90's are in this SG. So why 4 stars instead of 5?The lower set screw (high E side) on the lightning bar wraparound bridge arrived stuck. Under no tension, it could not be adjusted in or out with the 1/16 hex key on the included Gibson multi-tool. I had to use an extractor plier to get it out out of fear of grinding down the end of the hex. Upon inspection, some of the threads near the cup point on the screw were malformed. There were no issues with the screw on the upper (Low E) side. Tracking down a replacement #5-40 3/8" set screw in small (< 100) quantity was actually kind of difficult. A stuck screw on a bridge is not catastrophic, but it does seem like something that should have been caught in QA.Aside from the one issue, everything else was immaculate. Also, great service from Musicians Friend.

It arriived sealed new in the Gibson box totally unplayable. The setup was the worst of any guitar I have ever purchased. The high E string was totally dead. No notes would ring out at all on it and it buzzed elsewhere. I thought Gibson had stepped up their quality control but whoever was responsible for this should not be working there. I almost sent it back, but instead I took it to a pro tech I have used for many years and I'm happy to say that he dialed it in with a proper setup and it now plays great. He couldn't believe that Gibson would let a guitar go out like this, I know you usually have to setup a new guitar when you get it to your personal preferences, but they should at least be playable out of the box. I've bought many of their products. I'd recommend always calling them instead of emailing if you really need something. The Wow Factor:I'd rate it 10/10. It's a sweet looking guitar. You could live without it, but why would you?Overall:The guitar was setup right out of the box. Action was really low; it was well intonated. That's rare for new guitars; Gibsons included. It could use some fine tuning for your liking, but what guitar doesn't? It also has a chunky neck. Not 50s, but it's still chunky. My Gibson SG Diablo Tremolo has the rounded profile, but it's not this chunky. :]I tuned it down to C#, and the tone is very dark. Very resonant. Colors, and woodgrain vary with Gibsons, and I like that. Mine is a very nice shade of Vintage Cherry, and it has some nice woodgrain. Overall, I'd say this is a must have for any Tony Iommi, or SG fan. I can't afford the Custom Shop version, but this one isn't a bad second choice. Get yourself one today!

Alright, so the first one of these new SG Specials in Pelham Blue showed up with a giant crack (not finish checking) that wrapped from the input jack to the control panel. I knew I had to return it but tuned it up and noodled a bit and tested pickups to make sure it was worth the exchange. The guitar was so good I almost kept it. My girlfriend convinced me to return it for a new one and it's the best decision I've ever made regarding gear. I've had the new one for a few days and it is just better in every way compared to the damaged but also incredible guitar I originally received. The resonance, sustain, comfort, aesthetic, playability, P90s, even the smell... all perfect. Gibson even learned to cut a nut. It just feels and sounds better. There is no neck dive on this one, although the first one did have a neck heavy feel (nothing a leather/suede strap couldn't fix). I say all this to remind everyone that every guitar is different and just hope you get one with mojo. I went to a competitor today and played a new Les Paul Standard that was tagged at $1K higher than this SG. No comparison. I was laughing at how much better the SG was in every single department. I can't wait to take this on the road as my new #1 and I seriously doubt it will ever be topped. New or vintage. Gibson is taking this rebuild seriously, and these Original Collection models are the best step they could have taken.

The Supernaut of SG's!
13 September 2021

I'm not typically one for signature models, but Tony Iommi is probably the only guitarist I could ever put on that level, personally. I was going back and forth between grabbing an SG Special and the '61. Each had elements I wanted on an SG. Then, they announced the Tony Iommi Signature SG. It was exactly what I was looking for, because I was actually trying to get something as much in line with Tony's Monkey guitar. This guitar hits just about every check box. Plus it is the most beautifully crafted guitar I've ever owned. You can tell Gibson had some top notch people crafting this guitar. I couldn't be happier.
