This was a gift for our grandson. He was so thrilled with it, he was on the phone with us for almost an hour going on about it. It appears that it is more than he would ever expected about it for gaming and it is perfect for using for his online classes. I certainly got value for my money, given that I bought it in late 2014. However, by April 2023 it was on its last legs. So I needed to get a something in a hurry. The GE70 also put me off MSI a little bit, since it was very loud and also constantly hit 100 degrees C when gaming.Overall, I think I have been quite fortunate. I checked a lot of the competition on notebookcheck dot net, but there was no review of the Gigabyte AORUS 17 BSF when I made my purchase. I took a punt on the battery life, guessing that the 99Wh battery would be as good as I can get and it has turned out to be fine.So here are the pros and cons, from my perspective:Pros:* This laptop meets all of my selection criteria listed above.* It runs cool and quiet. I use the laptop in Power Saver mode most of the time. The CPU temperature rarely gets above 45 degrees in this mode and the fans never run. In this mode it gets about 85-100fps in DOOM2016.* In Performance mode, DOOM2016 achieves around 200fps most of the time at 1920x1080 and 150-200fps at 2560x1440 (16:9 aspect ratio modes fit the screen without black bars). The fans run, but the sound is just the hiss of moving air. There's no whining or low droning. I have see the CPU temperature reach 84C in this mode, but it's still cool on my lap.* It's good value for a 40-series NVIDIA GPU, from what I've seen.* Lots of USB ports, including one Thunderbolt port. There's also an HDMI and a mini DP port.* It didn't come through on the Scorptec web page, but there's also an SD card reader, which was a pleasant surprise.* The keyboard layout is quite standard and includes a numpad.* On light duties (web browsing with normal screen brightness), the battery life is about 4:50. It takes about 3:55 to discharge to 20% battery.Cons:* Gigabyte don't offer any support for Linux users. In fact they strike me as downright hostile. The only software they provide is for Windows 11. BIOS updates are provided as a Windows executable only. I asked them for help diabling UEFI secure boot and they just said they only do Linux. I also asked for technical information on controlling the USB HID keyboard lighting and they refused. I got it all working despite them.* There's some noticeable backlight bleed visible in the corners of the screen if you have a completely black background. But its very minor and I work with dark mode editors and terminals all day.* There are no LED indicators for the caps lock or numlock keys. Perhaps that is a function of the Gigabyte Control Center (GCC) software, since I believe each key can have its own colour.* Disabling secure boot (only Linux users will care) is an obscure operation, but doable. In the Security tab of the BIOS, you select the option to erase all UEFI keys and that puts the system into Setup mode, with secure boot disabled.* The boot menu includes an option for the BBS PopUp Menu. Never in my 40 years of using computers have I heard of such a thing. It's Gigabyte-speak for "let you select an external USB device to boot from".* The BIOS is the slowest part of the my boot process: 20 seconds just for it to list the keys to press to get into the BIOS, another 8 seconds before I get the password prompt for my Linux disk encryption. And then Fedora Linux is ready to log in 12 seconds later. So two thirds of the boot time is their BIOS.* Unlike the old MSI, there's no brushed aluminium here, it's all plastic. There are some grooves etched into the case that strike me as a bit of a dust trap.* The white power button indicator LED is fairly dazzlingly bright in a dark room. I blacked it out with permanent marker.Some information for Linux users:* Generally, all the important hardware works out of the box on Fedora 38: power management, NVIDIA GPU, WiFi, wired networking, HDMI, USB ports and card reader. The Bluetooth is a little flaky, but then I always find Bluetooth a bit flaky.* To get the proprietary NVIDIA driver (kernel module) to load, you either have to disable secure boot (as described above) or do some magic with mokutil to enlist the signing key for it. If you search for "linux NVIDIA key UEFI secure boot" you'll find some articles on how to do that.* Due to Gigabyte's unreasonable secrecy about their keyboard, there's no software to control the lighting. However, the keyboard comes with undocumented built-in functions for controlling the animation type, animation speed, solid colour and brightness: hold the Fn key and then press PgUp (animation type), PgDn (brightness), End (colour when monochromatic), left- and right- arrows (animation speed). Fn plus up- and down- arrows also adjust the brightness, as does Fn+Space. Gigabyte's manual only documents Fn+Space.* Gigabyte Control Centre (GCC) doesn't run in a Win 11 VirtualBox VM with USB passthrough. I have yet to test a Win 10 VB VM, but I know that some people have used that with Wireshark to reverse engineer other AORUS keyboards.* There is software to control a different AORUS keyboard on github: look for paul-ridgway/aero-keyboard. He also wrote a blog post in which he describes the reverse engineering results. I think I can probably adapt this but I haven't tried just yet.* Under Linux, only the Sleep, Airplane Mode, Mute and Volume function keys work out of the box. I presume I can get the others to work with a bit of fiddling.Overall, I'm pretty happy with the new lappy and will probably run this thing into the ground like the old one. It's a pretty safe bet for Linux users, despite Gigabyte's ridiculous attempts to be unfriendly.I have minor quibbles, many of which arise from my choice of operating system. If you're running Win 11, I'm sure it will be even better.

It serves it's purpose and I may just continue to ignore the ControlCenter software because I need it to control the fans. There's some sort of ControlCenter replacement software that I read about on Reddit, but I have to do that research again and I'll probably try that. However, I shouldn't have to do that. Regardless, Gigabyte will not get any more patronage from me in the future. I wish there were more desktop graphics cards available when I made this purchase so I wouldn't even have to deal with a laptop, but credit card deals with no interest don't grow on trees and so we sleep in the bed we made.

This it a great gaming laptop don't get me wrong. It plays most game well at 1080p and is very well built with a super nice keyboard and screen. But reviews are about being open and honest so that potential buyers know what they're getting in to. You need to fix your buggy Aorus Control Center and for goodness sake, allow us to disable Nvidia Optimus! It really kills gaming performance. If I want efficiency I will turn it back on. I average a 20 fps gain across about 8 tested games. Feels like a completely different laptop. GIGABYTE really needs to address this.

I found the mechanical keys feel a bit different and make a different sound to my previous laptop but it feels nice to type on, and the touch pad is well positioned and more importantly easy to turn off with a function button. Also nice that it has a physical cover on the camera so no need for tape or bluetack. I have not used the camera so can't comment on quality.Screen is great. The only OEM software I'm aware of is a lightweight Control Center utility.Honestly no downsides that I can think of. Would definitely recommend it.Also, I got great service from PC Case Gear, so I'd recommend the shop as well as the laptop.
This laptop is just stunning at the price. Display is sharp and you can’t complain when you get a numpad as well. Fitting in the 99 WHr battery makes portability easy. Considering the cost and putting in a mux switch, it’s an easy recommend. Only downside is there are not a ton of ports for the price. Definitely pickup a usb c dongle or dock

There is no manual, only a quick start guide. There is zero documentation for any of the included software. The advertised per key rgb (fusion 2.0) comes with software that does not allow you to create per game profiles, nor does it allow you to save custom settings. I had to reconfigure my Realtek software to have properly functioning audio. The Nahimic software is nice, and makes my PC37Xs sound amazing. The control center software is not the most user friendly, and is not quick to realize that new drivers have come out.***Be wary of the Azure AI***Mine kept OCing my CPU and switching my fan profile to standard, resulting in temps of 91-94°C (without cooling pad). I would highly recommend disabling the AI, setting a custom fan profile, and only OCing when needed.tl;dr Great hardware, horrible software. It'll take a little bit of work to get working out of the box. I would still recommend it though.
This is my 2nd i bought for my wife after being replaced. The first had a broken keyboard that im sure was internally not connected between the lack of detection in devices and the fact its lighting wasnt turning on. After contacting both newegg and gigabyte for help newegg immediately responded and provided the awesome support they always have with a next day label and immediate replacement. The second laptop has normally ran fine but every time she has run a game on it, it suffers a different and unique (4 so far) blue screen and dies. I have updated the bios and all drivers and have come to the conclusion it is a hardware error/issue and not something i can fix since not 1 issue can be detected. I would recommend this to any laptop owner, as it gives access to Bitlocker, allowing you to encrypt the hard drive. If the laptop is ever stolen, you won't have to worry about the thief gaining access to any credit card numbers that might be lurking about. I also took the time (and money) to add an additional 1TB of nvme storage. Opening up the back was relatively painless, but it's worth noting that the screws will require a star tipped screwdriver. I had to make a run to a local computer store to get a socket set that would do it, but that's a minor complaint on my part. Just know that if you do open it to upgrade, you'll need the right tools. Once I got it open, it was very easy to add the storage. I was also impressed with the fingerprint reader. Login is FAST. I mean, practically instantaneous. The fingerprint reader is located in a small square on the trackpad and works very well. What truly impressed me was wifi performance. Being a network engineer I went so far as to replace my FIOS router with a wifi 6 capable router. I have 75mbps throughput at home but I have tested it at 83mbps. During setup, I had the laptop downloading World of Warcraft and all my OneDrive content. Wifi 6 was using the entire 83mbps to download everything, which floored me. No disconnections or latency was noted, either. This was a terrific surprise. The keyboard looks really good and is very responsive. It is a mechanical keyboard of the old school type you don't see in keyboards anymore, so there is some clicking as you type. I found this, again, to be reassuring. Anyone who touch types will enjoy this keyboard. My only gripe is the sound coming out of the laptop, which isn't great. Most of us are probably using headsets, however, and the sound is perfectly acceptable for most tasks. I would suggest using either speakers or headphones if you want to listen to music or movies on the laptop, however. Overall, I am very impressed with this laptop. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who wants a solid, quality gaming laptop at a reasonable price.
Well, the packaging was top notch and the protection for the keyboard keys to not damage the screen was of microfibre cloth level. The actual case is super solid. It reminds me of what Batman's armour would look like. It doesn't look old and clunky. It's solid construction. And the Aorus logo on the top of the lid lights up like the Apple logo. Nice touch.The clickity-clack of the mechanical keyboard is super satisfying. I just downloaded my games and can't wait until I can play something competitive online. The fans do ramp up when under load, but no where near as loud as the Dell G5 that I just came from, so that's a non issue. It doesn't do bad in Time Spy. I'll tweak to see how far I can go, but where I'm hurting are the 2D scores. This device was not something in stock and needed to come from Taiwan. This wasn't communicated to me and I had paid for the express shipping option. All I needed was some communication proactively and that would have garnered a 5th star. Otherwise, now that I actually have the device, I have no regrets. I'll be gaming tonight to check out how smooth it plays. Recommended laptop and recommended Gigabyte overall.
