Girlhood by Maggie Dent

(8 reviews)

Commonly known as the 'Queen of Common Sense', Maggie Dent has become one of Australia's favourite parenting authors and educators. Maggie is the author of eight major books, including the bestselling 2018 release Mothering Our Boys and her 2020 release From Boys to Men. She hosts the ABC podcast, Parental As Anything and in July 2021 released a book of the same name. Maggie is a dedicated advocate for quietly changing lives in our families and communities. She is an ambassador for Telethon in WA and a champion of the Telethon Kids Institute. Maggie is also a proud ambassador for mindfulness app Smiling Mind and The Sanctuary, a crisis shelter in the Sydney Hills for women and their children who are fleeing domestic violence. Maggie is the mother of four sons and a very grateful grandmother to a growing tribe of precious little boys and girls. She lives in the South Coast region of NSW with her good bloke Steve Mountain and their dear little dog, Mr Hugo Walter Dent.

I thought it would be more of a how to parent so your daughter turns out brilliant guide but instead it's more of a fyi about child psychological stuff. References a lot of other dr's. A good read but not what I expected

I gifted this book to my daughter and niece
10 July 2022

Both my daughter and niece have young girls, and gifted them each a copy of Maggie Dents book Girlhood. They both intelligent women, and thought the book both insightful and offered useful tips to communicating effectively with little girls in contemporary times.

Irresponsible anecdotes
18 September 2022

In the first few chapters Maggie describes two 18-month-old girls saying "Can I have a biscuit please" and "stop taking photos Mama," as well as another reciting every word of Jingle Bells. I think it is irresponsible and flippant that she didn't explain how unusually advanced this is, even for girls. Toddlers generally start stringing sentences together when they are closer to 2 years of age. These anecdotes had me worried about my 18-month old daughter who says plenty of words but is yet to combine them, until I started chatting to other parents who were equally baffled by these stories.

Maggie's down to earth and very practical view of parenting is just so relatable.
