I bought this thermostat because I am away from home often and wanted the convenience of controlling my thermostat when I am away and the ability to make sure my furnace is running smoothly when I am away. I live in an area where it gets well below freezing and so it is very important my furnace keeps my house warm to avoid freezing pipes. My furnace is only 2.5 years old and I have not had any issues with it. This thermostat has been an issue from the beginning. It is very common to come home and see the thermostat is set at 70 but my house is only 66 (it has gotten into the 50s and won't come back on until I restart it or turn it off and then back on from the app). I can get it to come back on from my phone and that sometimes works but more often than not, I need to turn it on and off multiple times before it finally follows its schedule. I had my furnace checked out by a technician and they said my furnace was fine. I have called Google multiple times and they had me check wiring and my schedule to try and rule out any problems on my end. After determining it was not on my end, they sent me a new thermostat and this one has not worked. I called and requested a refund but they would not refund the purchase since I did not purchase it from the Google store. While the promises of this thermostat are amazing, the product was a massive disappointment and waste of time.

Decided to take the plunge this year and start introducing some smart home devices, starting with the Thermostat. installation was a snap and can be done by any DYI novice, as long as you take a look at google compatibility before hand and cross reference with your existing wiring. I don't think this quite has the learning smarts of the Topend Nest Tstat, more like you setup a custom schedule and it adjust intelligently between home and away using your phone geolocation. App seems easy enough to use letting you hold temp, adjust schedules, and generally being in control of your homes temp from afar. Last I checked warranties were intended to protect the consumer not companies that take short cuts in software development and testing. The issue was caused by google and yet they refuse to replace the unit they broke and for that reason I will never recommend google. This is an unacceptable business practice and further supports the common theory that tech companies intentionally brick their devices to force consumers to purchase new. Save yourself the time and energy and just go with a different offering. Seems that the Ecobee Thermostat is rated higher than the nest anyway...

Google has ruined Nest

My electric bill has gone up $100 per month over the last year because of the Nest algorithm, despite my earning "green leafs" which is energy savings. The nest doorbell I activated a subscription for less than 1 hr and they refused to give me a refund as their policy is "No refunds". The doorbell is very glitchy and it's difficult to pull your video now and it used to be great. Video takes forever to load now and by time you can see who is at the door you might a well have answered it. It has no alerts unless you subscribe to the service, so it will not tell you if someones at the door before it rings and it won't replay any video you can just see images. Pretty much any smoke at all sets it off and Im not even sure it can detect carbon monoxide. If you don't use alkaline batteries only heaven help you it will beep every other day and it is loud and painful o your ears. When you stop alarm it will keep going off repeatedly as if it is an alarm clock.Another thing you might not be aware of is you also have to purchase a Nest system adapter which is also expensive and takes up an outlet for the system to be cohesive.Save your money get a cheaper ecosystem with less fees.

Horrible support
17 December 2022

Just to clarify not saying that the people working in support are horrible just the actual support they are able give you is horrible. I purchase a nest thermostat on December 1 and installed it that night woke up at four in the morning to a cold house because while the fan on my thermostat was running it was not producing any air. Spent over an hour on the phone with someone from nest thermostat customer support for them to tell me that that was not functioning properly. Requested that I send it back and so they could look at it. I was told that they were trying to fix and if they cannot be fix it I would receive either a new or refurbished unit. 12 days later I receive my refurbished nest monitor and a box without any markings on it with just the thermostat no ... MoreJust to clarify not saying that the people working in support are horrible just the actual support they are able give you is horrible. Called over to nest who wants me to mail that thing back to them and they would send me out a another replacement unit in approximately 10 days from the date that they receive it. I complain saying seems kind of crazy to send back the whole entire thermostat unit just so they can send me out the mounting plate and the hardware. They finally agreed to just send out the new mounting plate and hardware but state that this again is going to take 10 days. At this point I’m just fed up with the fact that I purchased some thing That wasn’t working and it’s gonna take over 25 days to have it rectified. At that point I said I would just rather return the nest thermostat and get my money back because at this point I don’t want the nest thermostat at all. Well because I sent it back to the company for repair/replacement under their policy now that’s not even an option. If this is the support you have for a newly purchased malfunctioning unit then what will the support be six months out? Not very promising. Save your money, don’t even purchase it. Go with another brand.

My boyfriend just drew out his second attempt at a wiring schematic. And we've posted in the forums, too. The Nest support is incredibly shallow and missing all kinds of basics. We are long past the point where Nest advises to hire a professional. But you shouldn't have to hire a professional to wire a thermostat!

Crap product! I will be replacing the Nest with a different thermostat as soon as my refund is applied. And definitely a different brand. Although it should be compatible with my heat and air until, it never fully worked. I spent so much time learning how to install the damn thing. Not simple. Don’t believe the hype. After hours I determined that the C-wire would not connect. (I became an expert in thermostat wiring during this whole mess.) I went through online chats and multiple calls over several days with customer service and spent a LOT of time troubleshooting with an agent on the phone for ~1.5 hours before he determined it was not going to work and that I would have yo return it. Only it is unable to connect to my wireless network (so I cannot set it with the app on my phone) and it is not getting enough power to work properly (it needs the C-wire yo do that). So yeah… not a very “SMART” device after all. The special “power connector” I had to order (and wait a week for delivery) was supposed to fix the whole C-wire thing. But to install the power connector I would have to either open up my heat and air unit and screw around with wires (oh HELL NO) OR pay more than I paid for the thermostat to get a professional to my house to install it. What the hell kind of piece of junk is this thing?

NICE thermostat.. MISLEADING C Wire boast.. Shameful installation instructions

Once installed properly the thermostat will be awesome BUT... installation - if you don't have a C wire at the thermostat - was the most frustrating experience. Google's misleading and inadequate instructions are shameful. You DO need either a C wire or external power source along with the Google power connector to provide constant power for this device to run properly on wifi. (Unless you have a good understanding of electrical systems) Instructions both written and video do not actually tell you how to connect the wires either. Bottom line.. installation should not be rocket science. Once installed the thermostat is awesome. Be forewarned... if you get an error message scour the forums and watch user videos before contacting Google for support - their support amounts to no more than referring you to an expensive HVAC tech when you really can do this yourself!

Nest no longer works after a year
6 July 2022

I installed the Nest about a year ago and it worked fine, up until three weeks ago when it would short cycle my AC. My AC unit would click on and off constantly, sometimes it would turn on and be fine other times it would continue the short starting pattern. When my AC repair person came out, he told me Nest are only good for about a year - two years, then something like the issue I am having will happen. I thought he had an axe to grind with Nest so I shrugged off his comment and stuck with the Nest after he did his routine maintenance. It worked or about two weeks and then the issue came back. I decided to put my old thermostat back on and it worked, no problems. For anyone wondering, I had all the proper wires, it was running 27 volts, no coolant leaks, and the ... MoreI installed the Nest about a year ago and it worked fine, up until three weeks ago when it would short cycle my AC. I decided to put my old thermostat back on and it worked, no problems. For anyone wondering, I had all the proper wires, it was running 27 volts, no coolant leaks, and the coils weren't frozen. The issue was the Nest. I contacted customer service and they told me that I wasn't eligible for a refund but they would send me a base replacement unit. Maybe that would solve the problem, but should a thermostat really only be good for two years? What if this happened during a snow storm? What a liability this could be for them. I'm disappointed in Nest as I had hoped for a better outcome but just another example of a bigger company getting away with a poorly made product. I know Nest's are trendy but please save the 200 dollars and go with another system.

Very Amazing Smart Thermostat!!!
26 July 2022

I bought 2 Honeywell Thermostats and the first one I bought was able to function my A/C when it was installed it but, when winter came, my heating wasn’t kicking in. I bought another Honeywell thermostat and the same problem occurred. My home didn’t have the C wire that caused the issue for both thermostats not to work. Had to put the original thermostat back on. My furnace was working fine for winter and when I switched to A/C mode, it wasn’t kicking in. My HVAC guy didn’t rewire the thermostat correctly and I was losing it!!! The summer has been brutally hot over the last 2 weeks. I saw the Google Nest Thermostat on sale and before I decided to purchase it, I watched some videos that inspired me to try and install this device on my own. The summer has been brutally hot over the last 2 weeks. I saw the Google Nest Thermostat on sale and before I decided to purchase it, I watched some videos that inspired me to try and install this device on my own. I also bought the trim kit and performed a DIY. I missed a step when I snapped the the thermostat to the base as I wasn’t seeing any power to the thermostat. I didn’t realize there were 2 batteries that needed my attention where I had to remove a sticker. Once the thermostat powered up, I followed the instructions and it conducted a test. I heard my A/C compressor kicking in and my furnace fan going on. The Wi-Fi connection was also a success and I was jumping for joy!!! It’s amazing that I’m also able to control the temperature anywhere from my mobile device and that it goes into eco mode when nobody is home with presence sensing. I regret not buying this thermostat a few years back. It’s pure brilliance and I’m loving it!!!
