Google Pixel 7 Pro (128GB+12GB, Hazel)
The Pixel 7 Pro comes with the usual chipset upgrade, a camera tweak here or there, and a refined design, on top of a handful of software novelties. One of the two key differences this year, looking at the spec sheet, is the new telephoto camera, which trades in the larger sensor size for a longer zoom reach - that doesn't immediately strike us as an entirely positive development, though the 5x zoom is appreciated. The other new bit is the chipset. The tailor-made Tensor G2 comes with some new CPU cores and a new GPU, as well as who knows exactly how many under-the-hood improvements, but is still manufactured on a 5nm process, when competitors are at 4nm. Physically, the handset is the same as last year, but also different. The camera strip on the back is still here and just as prominent, only now it's part of the aluminum frame and not a separate glass piece as last year. And that's more or less what's changed for the 2022 Pixel Pro.

I really wanted to like this device but it is a major downgrade from my pixel 3a XL in a lot of waysThe battery life is absolutely horrendous, it drains at a rate of over 1% per minute doing nothing but reading in a web browser. This phone feels like it weighs 5 times as much as my Pixel 3a XL yet it still manages to get less than 1/3 the battery life. This phone also gets HOT HOT HOT.I guess that would explain the battery issues. They obviously don't know how to design a processor that has TDP worth a single F.Another major problem is backwards compatibilityI never experienced this issue before until now.I have a few apps that will not install at all on this device, even with sideloading.Android 13 security is extremely overzealous and prevents you from ... MoreI really wanted to like this device but it is a major downgrade from my pixel 3a XL in a lot of waysThe battery life is absolutely horrendous, it drains at a rate of over 1% per minute doing nothing but reading in a web browser. This phone feels like it weighs 5 times as much as my Pixel 3a XL yet it still manages to get less than 1/3 the battery life. This phone also gets HOT HOT HOT.I guess that would explain the battery issues. They obviously don't know how to design a processor that has TDP worth a single F.Another major problem is backwards compatibilityI never experienced this issue before until now.I have a few apps that will not install at all on this device, even with sideloading.Android 13 security is extremely overzealous and prevents you from installing older appsAnd they are planning to make it 1000x worse in Android 14.I have apps that control devices that are hard wired into my walls that are only a couple of years old that I can't control now because the phone will not let me install their apps, not even through sideloading which they are planning to block almost entirely on the next version of Android. Also Google still hasn't bothered to fix bugs that were present on my old pixel 3a XL that is 4 years old now, the same old bugs still persist on the new device and the new OS, Google never fixes bugs so when you get a new device you get all the bugs from before plus a whole new set to seal with, YAY.Migration from my old device to this one has been an absolute nightmare.Apps won't install, the Chrome browser and all it's derivatives will not migrate tabs or history. The password manager still absolutely sucks and doesn't work for about 40% of sites and apps.Even when you use "log in with Google" it still manages to F it up and still asks for user name and password which somehow doesn't know or auto fill even though it popped up askit you of you want to store the password and you hit yes.So plan on resetting all your passwords if you can't remember them or don't have your old phone.Yeah it has a decent camera and it is faster than my old phone but what good is any of it when the battery life is garbage and the phone is slow to charge.

I was generally shocked at just how nice the Google Pixel 7 phone is at the price this point. As someone who has been on iOS since smartphones came out, I was proud of how fast I was able to adapt to Android in just a matter of minutes. Having a Google email account already made setting up the Pixel 7 a breeze. Since I'm using this phone strictly as a work phone, and having all my contacts already tied to my Gmail made importing all my contacts super easy and convenient. This little phone packs a punch and goes toe to toe with my personal $1200 phone. Right out of the box you notice just how nice the display is and the snappiness of the 90Hrz screen refresh rate is when scrolling through texts and photos. Right out of the box you notice just how nice the display is and the snappiness of the 90Hrz screen refresh rate is when scrolling through texts and photos. The face unlock feature is sneakily one of greatest features, in that as soon as it sees your face, it will immediately unlock your phone without having to also swipe up, whereas coming from other phones this now seems like a waste of time to also have to swipe up. The camera is very nice, in that it takes amazing photos, Google has implemented some great tech here. I don't know how to exactly explain how it works but when focusing on the object you want to shoot, the object on screen doesnt look like the best quality on screen but once the photo is taken it upreses the photo and looks 10x better, truly some impressive tech. And having to ability to change setting like resolution right from the camera app and not having to go to the settings app, is nice quality of life addition,Another cool camera feature that I accidentally stumbled upon is the “Google Lens” feature, where if you take a picture of a product box it will then analyze the box and show you youtube videos of it or take you to where you can purchase the item directly. A really cool feature that I can see myself using a lot when it comes to things like price matching, finding an item in stock or watching a Youtube review on a product before buying it. Another one of my favorite little things about the haptic feedback when typing is that it almost feels like typing on a physical keyboard and I notice myself making a lot less typing errors with this keyboard than other phone keyboards. I only cons I’ve really had with this phone is the placement of the wake/power button being right above the volume rocker buttons, where I have accidentally hit the wake button multiple times when trying to turn the volume up, where I guess this will go away over time when I get better muscle memory of the location but just a minor inconvenience. Also, I also highly recommend putting a case on this phone because of the glass back for protection and fingerprints just cover the back real easy. So, overall you can’t go wrong with the Google Pixel 7, where you get a top end phone for a fraction of the price compared to the other phones on the market.

Seeing the positive press about the new devices and seeing how happy my wife and mother are with their Pixel 6s, I decided the 7 Pro would be my next phone. Unlike my previous phone choice, I definitely made the right call this time.Even though smartphones are phones, I don't think people pay much attention to that essential functionality when choosing a device. People, myself included, often prefer other forms of communication because of the pain points involved with making phone calls, particularly when calling businesses and getting stuck going through a seemingly endless series of menu options, only to be put on hold. I am thankful that Google has put effort to improving the experience with Direct My Call and Hold For Me to make calling businesses less painful. On a related note, the spam filtering and call screening features also work well. One of the biggest the features I pay attention to when purchasing a phone is the camera, and the Pixel excels in this regard. The images are sharp and the colors are accurate. While I predominantly use the main shooter, the wide angle with macro mode and the telephoto lens are great to have. The photos in daylight are wonderful, but where the Pixel truly differentiates itself is in lowlight situations. The ability for night sight to pick up colors and details barely visible to the naked eye is seriously impressive. The additional AI features with the camera, such as magic eraser and unblur, are also nice additions. The Pixel 7 Pro is a nice looking phone that feels well made. I typically opt for black phones, but I really like the Hazel color to change things up. While looks are important, comfort is more so. Google chose rounded edges that make the phone comfortable to hold rather than straight sides with sharp edges that make it uncomfortable in the hand like my previous phone. The screen is large, sufficiently bright, and the curved glass give it a nice feel. Speaking of feel, I was concerned that the phone's size would mean I wouldn't be able to use it with one hand, but its slim and rounded design actually mean I mostly use it with one hand for things like web browsing and typing. As for the operating system, I am a big fan of Android and the attention Google pays to user experience, with its customizability and excellent notifications system. However, it would be nice if there was an option to remove the search bar from the bottom of the home screen, but this is not a big deal.Setup and moving all of my apps, messages, photos, calendar, etc from my old device to the Pixel was very straightforward and quick, allowing my to be up and running on it in about 20 minutes. The battery lasts me a full day with average use, as expected, and the charging speed is about average. Improving the battery life and supporting higher-speed charging are areas for improvement, but the current battery life and charging speed do not take away from the experience.I understand Google did not design the Tensor 2 chip to be the most powerful mobile processor on the market, but I have found it to perform well in day-to-day use, such as rendering websites and moving between apps. I am not a gamer, so I cannot comment on how it performs in that regard. In all, I am very pleased with the Pixel 7 Pro and foresee getting years of use out of it.

I've been a Samsung Note consumer since the Note 2, and when the Note 20 was the last of the Note models, I decided to look for something new. I thought that a Google phone had the highest probability of being the best of the Android devices. They run the play store, they have good reviews, it's a company with a reputation for quality, innovation and advanced tech - of course I would give them a whirl. I was not as impressed as I had hoped. The phone is quite attractive and has a good size screen. There are easier and more convenient interfaces with all of the Google tools I use, but some features that aren't very day to day, but are important when you need them, are lacking. For example - I attempted to cast or screen mirror my phone to my TCL Roku TV as I had done countless times from all my Samsung phones, with no success. My TV didn't appear as an available device under the "cast" list of available devices. My wife's Samsung Galaxy found it immediately. Issue #2 - I play CoD:M on my phone a few times a week. There is something related to the video on the Google that was never an issue on Samsung. Every time the game launches the visible screen shrinks to about 2/3 of the actual screen size and a button appears in the lower right with the message "tap here to relaunch app in full screen". I do that ... every time ... But the even more confounding glitch is that the button remains on the screen after it relaunches in full screen mode. Here's why that's a problem: The lower right corner of a game screen always contains primary controls to the game, since that is where your right thumb is located. With this unmovable "relaunch" button sitting in that space, I accidentally relaunch the app two or three times a week, in the middle of intense gameplay. VERY frustrating to have to be continuously conscious of a button that doesn't need to even exist, other than for the reason that the phone won't automatically launch the game in full screen mode when you start it. One more that pops to mind is a rarity for me but may be frequent for the photographers out there. One of the big marketing points of the Pixel is the camera and associated editing software. When my daughter pulled out her Samsung the other night and snapped a picture of the full moon in crisp enough detail to see the larger features on the surface, I thought I'd put the Pixel Power to the test and show her a thing or two ... LOLI was mistaken. The camera couldn't zoom in as close, couldn't compensate for the glare off the moon, and couldn't get a good focus. My daughter got a picture of the moon and I got a picture of a big, white, nondescript ball in the sky. Very disappointing. I will work around these minor issues for the life of the phone, since it does do everything I need it to do, but when it's time to trade in, I'm going back to Samsung.
Long story short: I like this phone!Short story long:I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max as well that I use heavily for work. The main reason I got the Pixel was because of the "Hold for me" calling feature that is available only on Pixel phones. This magical feature just removes the annoyance of dealing with interactive voice response systems when calling businesses, especially airlines and credit card companies for routine customer-to-business calls. Yes, this is a lot of money to spend just for a calling feature, but once I experienced it there is no way I am going back to calling anyone from a non Pixel device. That feature aside, this phone has a fantastic camera just like the iPhone, so I am indifferent to camera performance. The swipe from the side gesture to ... MoreLong story short: I like this phone!Short story long:I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max as well that I use heavily for work. Yes, this is a lot of money to spend just for a calling feature, but once I experienced it there is no way I am going back to calling anyone from a non Pixel device. That feature aside, this phone has a fantastic camera just like the iPhone, so I am indifferent to camera performance. The swipe from the side gesture to navigate back takes some time to get used to, but now I miss that gesture on the iPhone. The phone itself feels delicate even though it is built very sturdy, so I ordered a cheap kickstand case for it that makes the phone super grippy and it now feels like a tank in my hands.I love the face unlock and fingerprint unlock on the phone that makes it easy to use while wearing a mask.I also have a Pixel watch that works great with this phone.Battery life is way more than adequate, and I typically have about 30% left over after 24 hours of using the phone fairly heavily.Everything is smooth. There is a scrolling problem in the default configuration, but it goes away by toggling off the "Use graphic driver preferences" setting in developer options. The one annoyance is that the font sizing is not uniform across the device. Fonts are either too big or too small, and I have tried just about every combination of font and display size. The Samsung user interface in comparison is a lot better with font sizing. One star taken away for this annoyance.
I have been a Google phone user since the Pixel 3, this is my third one, and Google seems to have, if not hit it out of the park, at least got a triple with the Pixel 7. Due to my age, I finally decided to move to a "big" phone, after swearing I would never get one. My eyes have thanked me. The screen is very bright and sharp. It has met every function that I want a mobile phone to perform. Calls are clear, and the improved "On Hold" handling service is pretty useful. Due to my age, I finally decided to move to a "big" phone, after swearing I would never get one. My eyes have thanked me. The screen is very bright and sharp. It has met every function that I want a mobile phone to perform. Calls are clear, and the improved "On Hold" handling service is pretty useful. I have noticed that music playback, especially over ear buds, it MUCH better than previous models. Stereo separation is superb, and everything sounds extremely clear and volume handling is great. Bluetooth connections also seem to operate a lot better than in previous models. The real treat, of course, is the camera. You can seriously use up tons of time editing and tweaking your pictures to your heart's content. I like the improved zoom capability. I will say that the camera seems to perform better in light conditions, I wasn't super impressed with straight up Night Sight on the 7 at first, and some of its choices taking pictures of Christmas light displays were downright odd, but I have been able to figure out how to make adjustments, and sometimes it does better with Time Lapse, you just have to kind of work with it. The Magic Eraser functionality is, really, about as close to "magic" as technology gets, you will have a blast playing with it. I have not noticed issues with battery life that others have noted, I've never come close to depleting mine in the course of a day, but I'm not really a power user either. The only downside I have noticed with the phone so far is something that, really, Google has always, to my mind, had issues with the Pixels, and that seems to be memory management. Apps will swap in and out too frequently for my taste, and every so often (certainly not frequent, but enough that I have taken note), I have had issues where apps that have behaved perfectly will suddenly either stop working or just sort of freeze up. A restart always seems to fix it. I think this is just something Google needs to work on in general, but I'm a little disapointed that they haven't seemed to make much progress in that area yet.
Like many other companies, Google tends to update the Pixel lineup of phones every year - and this is the latest (and greatest yet) version of that, the 7th version of the "main line" of Pixel phones (not including the "a" models) and my third edition, having had the Pixel 2 and Pixel 4a 5G before it.Upgrading from the 4a, the 7 brings a LOT of new features, but the biggest thing you notice out of the box is the impressive performance upgrade. In benchmarks, I'm seeing nearly 3x the graphical performance (from ~1700 to ~5200 in 3dmark Wild Life) and nearly double the single core CPU performance (from 569 to 985 in Geekbench). While the multi-core performance is less of an impressive improvement (a still respectable ~40% or thereabouts in Geekbench), you can really ... MoreLike many other companies, Google tends to update the Pixel lineup of phones every year - and this is the latest (and greatest yet) version of that, the 7th version of the "main line" of Pixel phones (not including the "a" models) and my third edition, having had the Pixel 2 and Pixel 4a 5G before it.Upgrading from the 4a, the 7 brings a LOT of new features, but the biggest thing you notice out of the box is the impressive performance upgrade. While the multi-core performance is less of an impressive improvement (a still respectable ~40% or thereabouts in Geekbench), you can really feel the difference in day to day use, with apps working more quickly and overall the phone feeling more responsive. The design is familiar though I'm not sure how I feel about the camera bulge on the back - my case will smooth that portion out but it's generally a matter of personal preference. Speaking of cameras, the post-processing here is impressive - including the night sight option and all the various settings, options and additional processing makes it easy to take great pictures and cinematic videos. As with all Pixel line phones, you get a clean build of Android which is great and you get updates to new versions (including major versions and security updates) much faster than custom builds you would find on other phones. Really, the only downside I can see is that they've moved from the physical fingerprint reader on the back of the phone to a reader integrated into the screen which does WORK, but it isn't as faster usable as the ones that are built into the back. The face recognition is usable, but I tend to keep it off since it is less secure than other options. All in all, if you don't mind a slight downgrade in the fingerprinter reader (very slightly), then this could be a just the update you've been waiting for!
I got this phone over two weeks ago and have truly been impressed by everything from the screen resolution, responsiveness of the OS, image quality and image editing features, and the uniqueness of the design of the device. You can read all the reviews online about the features in more depth and detail but I have to say this phone hits the spot. The image quality is remarkable. Even better is the ability to edit photos after the fact by adding a portrait blur, unblurring images, or using the magic eraser. The magic eraser is probably one of the coolest photo editing features I've experienced in a while. You simply circle/highlight the area of an existing photo you want removed and voila, it's gone! The magic eraser is probably one of the coolest photo editing features I've experienced in a while. You simply circle/highlight the area of an existing photo you want removed and voila, it's gone! Additionally, the unblur feature is really neat too. If your hands aren't steady and the image seems blurry or distorted - you can "unblur" the photo, which also works surprisingly well. I also haven't used Android OS since it's infancy and am truly impressed with how snappy and responsive this phone is when opening/closing apps or changing pages on your home screen, etc. The OS is uncluttered and visually attractive. The Pixel 7 Pro is also devoid of any bloatware that carriers or manufacturers may add to other devices. The screen itself is remarkably clear and bright and doesn't ghost. The response time of the screen may be less than some other devices, but it was plenty fine for me. There are reviews talking about how the battery is unimpressive - I'm not sure what those reviewers were doing but if you use your phone for work (e.g., Outlook, Teams) and personal (e.g., Instagram, Reddit, texting) - I can tell you I get about 18-20 hours of life before needing to charge it. Also another cool set of features is how you unlock the phone - you can set it up to recognize your face or if you're wearing a mask or something you can also use the under screen fingerprint reader. Both ways of unlocking your phone are fast and I find it convenient to be able to use the finger print reader as I travel often and sometimes that requires wearing a mask. Overall, I've truly been impressed by this phone. I tried hard to think of something negative to say since everything above is so positive but I couldn't think of any complaints. I truly enjoy using this phone and recommend it highly to anyone in the market for a phone that is feature rich that will bring some enjoyment to your life in an area that's been stagnant for some time.
While I haven't had the phone for very long (roughly 2 weeks now), it has been working well and I've been pretty pleased with it. I've used nothing but Samsung Galaxies for the last 10 years now, and the jump was done so quite anxious, if I'm being honest. But after so many terrible review on the battery life, storage, etc, I decided to research alternatives that felt more compatible for my personal needs. The storage on this thing is incredible, and it works like your average Android, so while you may miss the heavy customization of something like a Samsung phone, I'd say it's the closest thing to it. The screen resolution is phenomenal, and the camera is wonderful! Personal biggest gripe is that it doesn't have its own Gallery app, but instead uses Google Photos ... MoreWhile I haven't had the phone for very long (roughly 2 weeks now), it has been working well and I've been pretty pleased with it. The screen resolution is phenomenal, and the camera is wonderful! Personal biggest gripe is that it doesn't have its own Gallery app, but instead uses Google Photos as both gallery and GF. Also, the notes app feels pretty bare bones, could definitely use some improvement. Overall, it runs pretty well, and it runs quickly, and I've been quite satisfied with it. Battery life depends on your usage, I would say, as sometimes it feels like it'll last a long time, and at other times it feels like I have to charge it maybe up to 2-3x per day. I do use my phone a lot, and even have games on it, so do take that with a grain of salt (also, Chrome typically uses up more battery/memory in my experience). Would most certainly recommend this bad boy, but as always, do your research first and make sure it fits your needs and budget accordingly. There is no SD card, but I believe it has the option for 2 SIM cards instead. Cases and protectors are a bit limited for the PP7, so do keep that in mind going forward as well. Biometrics work well most of the time, and facial recognition is okay at best in my experience. Overall, while I do miss my Galaxies, I've been more than happy with my Pixel Pro 7, enough to not feel too jarred even after having to adapt after so many years now.*Images include: comparison to Apple iPhone 11, comparison with Samsung Galaxy S10 (and S7), screen protector and case not wanting to get along, and an image of the back side (with Otterbox case).
