Now, although you likely won’t be outputting in 8:7, this aspect ratio allows you to capture in this near square format and then you can punch in for either vertical or horizontal formats using the same clip. So you could use horizontal if you wanted to upload to YouTube or Facebook and then re-crop to vertical or square for Instagram. I can’t tell you how useful this feature is for being able to re-use content. In terms of the accessories, the Volta grip is pretty handy where it serves quadruple duty as a grip, a tripod, an extended battery, as well as a remote control. For me, I value the extended battery and grip functionality a lot and also find the tripod handy, but its not necessarily the most versatile in terms of camera positions where you can’t really tilt the camera. You can rotate and pivot the camera but tilting it from one side to another isn’t possible which is something that would make it better. The Hero 11 already captures surprisingly good audio but the media mode takes it up another level with very good audio from the built in mic on the mod itself. In addition it also comes with a foam wind cover for reducing noise from wind. And if you want even better audio from an external mic, you can do that too as it has a 3.5mm audio jack for plugging in your favorite external mic. Along with that it has an HDMI port and USB C port And it also has a couple hot shoes built in so you can attach other accessories like the LED light that also comes with this kit.In terms of value, this kit delivers a lot and if you’re looking to get into content creation whether it be for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and better yet, all of the above, this is a fantastic value for the money.

There are two buttons on the camera itself and a very small screen to check what options or settings you’re thumbing through but most everything is done via the app, which can be a pro or a con. On the plus side, it’s dead easy to point and shoot, but on the negative side it is a bit of a hassle to spend some time going through menus with just two buttons and a small screen or having to whip out the app. The app is another aspect of the Mini that, being so prominent, can be a bit of a downside. It requires a subscription for things like unlimited cloud storage and auto uploading, which I find to be pretty essential features for a camera. Fortunately the subscription fee is about fifty USD, so not an insanely hefty amount, and does include other perks like discounts on other GoPro merch. It just is a bit of a downer that to get the most functionality out of this camera, you need to shell out an additional subscription fee. The camera also does not feature a removable battery like other digital cameras I’ve used in the past, which does lead to some concern about whether in the future battery wear and tear will render this little camera unusable. The lack of a viewfinder on the actual camera itself is also somewhat jarring and harkens back to the mild inconvenience of having to defer to the app for everything. All that being said, the actual camera capabilities of the Mini are astounding. I was blown out of the water by the quality of the capture for such a relatively tiny device. I don’t believe this would work well for extended use, such as in, say, hiking videos, as in my own experience the battery lasted about an hour on average. But for fun things like a daily vlog or cooking videos or experimental pov footage, this camera would work excellently and is easy to mount. It works decently well even in night conditions, too. Ultimately, this camera has some considerable benefits and detriments to weigh and would, in my opinion, work best for the amateur enthusiast or as a secondary camera. It is definitely a lot of fun to experiment with, though, and if you can manage to not mind the limited controls and the marriage this has to the app (which isn’t bad, but requires payment on a subscription basis to fully “unlock”), this is a neat little camera for sure.

Stills are shot at an impressive (for an active cam) 24mp, and the same quality can be still grabbed from a video using their app.Stabilization is incredible, and seems to get better every generation of camera GoPro releases. Levels of stabilization are adjustable, as well as a mode for “AutoBoost” where the camera will adjust levels of stabilization as needed. It also now features a horizon lock if you’re doing aerial shots with this, but seems a feature that will be used by relatively few.The “Media Mod” takes this camera from a standard action cam to a full production-quality camera. This gives you the ability to add on up to 2 “hot shoe” accessories (NOTE: This is NOT the same size as a standard camera hot shoe, so while it does give you options, it’s not fully compatible with flashes or external mics you might use with a larger DSLR). The Mod unit gives you expansion with a passthrough USB-C (charging), Micro HDMI (larger attachable video screen), and a standard 3.5” mic port (adding a mic or a lavalier setup). The mod also adds its own directional mic (the user can control the mic priority – front or back, so if you’re shooting forward & live narrating from behind the camera, you can prioritize your voice from behind and not make it sound like you’re actually BEHIND the camera) with an attachable foam windscreen. This simply isn’t a vlogging camera without it. (Though you have to remove a battery door to attach it, which to me is annoying, but more of that in the “cons” section).Attachable to the Media Mod hot shoe is an included LED light. The light has 3 different brightness levels (as well as a 4th mode which flashes SOS if you get lost while out shooting with this), which are nicely diffused with the removable diffuser cover. The light works nicely on closer-in subjects or objects, but know the thing measures maybe 2” across, so it’s not going to light a wide area for wider shots. The camera also includes the Volta shooting handle for mounting, holding, and controlling the camera, which also can recharge the battery (though not while shooting, see “cons” below). The handle connects to the media mod with a curled USB-C cable for powering the camera, but controls the camera via Bluetooth. You can essentially start/stop recording or take stills and change modes with the handle. The handle also includes a tripod for setting the whole rig down for recording, though it’s short, so you’ll need something to sit it on if you’re recording anything taller than the ground. The base of the handle includes a standard thread for further mounting to a tripod or desk mount if you’re using this as a table-based video camera (ex., for streaming).Because of the high quality and framerate of the camera, make sure you check GoPro’s website for supported SD cards. It’s critical you get the highest speed microSD you can buy. I purchased a 64Gb card and it lasts all day recording, so you don’t have to go overboard with capacity. Speed is key here.I love the case that the whole unit comes with, a semi-hard sided zipper case with a nice cardboard inner system that everything comes from GoPro in. Being cardboard though is one of the disappointments – I would have loved to see this come as a plastic inner organization system so it was able to be used in perpetuity. If you’re careful with the cardboard, it may last long enough for you, but getting things out of it on a routine basis will likely tear the cardboard at some point. I’ve since remounted everything in a ruggedized Pelican case, but the included case is nice & compact to carry in a backpack. The Cons:Battery life continues to be an issue, despite the Enduro batteries that have a higher capacity. I was getting less than 30 minutes of recording time in. Moreover, you cannot charge the battery with the Media Mod while the camera is recording. So while you can get (advertised) up to 4 hours of battery life with the included Volta handle, it doesn’t do any good if it can’t actually shoot that long without stopping to swap batteries or recharge. THE ONLY WAY AROUND THIS is to remove the battery & run with nothing but the Volta or an external power supply attached. Again, to me this makes little sense, and limits that ability to move from “plugged in” to “portable on battery”. We’re clearly able to charge pretty much everything else in the world while using the device (your phone comes to mind), so not sure why GoPro continues to limit this. (Note that battery life is heavily based on the video quality & framerate you’re shooting and whether you’re using the front and/or back displays. I recommend turning off the forward-facing “selfie” screen if you don’t need it to help save battery).I would have also liked, on a package this expensive, for GoPro to have included more than 1 battery and perhaps their available battery charging bay. There’s no one out thereThe mic sensitivity isn’t the greatest. Again, recording in close is fine, but recording anything more than say 6 or 8 feet ahead tends to lose audio quality. I suggest use of a lav mic if you’re recording anything more than arm’s length from the camera. To attach the Media Mod, you have to fully remove the battery door (though the Mod does a good job of resealing the door). If you’re planning on going back & forth between using the Mod and not, you’ll find yourself having to remove or re-attach the door constantly. Since the door is only connected with a couple of very small teeth, this is a high-probability item to break. (Note that it does come with one replacement door, though it is a door with a passthrough opening for the USB-C port).Zooming isn’t as easy when using this out & about as my other “dedicated vlogging” camera that is essentially a full mirrorless DSLR with a pop-out 24-70mm zoom lens. Expect to essentially stay in a single frame while shooting, and if you want to zoom you’ll have to work on that in post. Also, the way to switch modes (video/photo/slo-mo, etc.) is to swipe left or right on the rear display (you can also single press the mode button on the side). The touch screen is very sensitive, so it’s easy to accidentally (and annoyingly) switch modes while trying to access options on the camera or just brushing up against it.Summary:While there are certainly a couple of cons, they don’t take away from the amazing quality and versatility of this camera. This has replaced my usual go-to “on-the-go” vlogging camera solely because I’m no longer worried about it getting wet or dropping and damaging it. I love the ability to easily add on accessories like a lav mic without a lot of trouble. GoPro seems to check all the boxes with this camera, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Front and rear LED displays offer live color view. The rear LED is touch-enabled to allow quick access to camera settings. The fold-down legs allow mounting without a separate shell. The HERO11 uses the same high-capacity battery (1720 mAh) as the HERO10 and HERO9. Lightroom has a camera profile for HERO 11, but no lens profile yet. Downloader Pro (part of my normal photo workstream) could not accurately recognize EXIF in GoPro RAW files (*.GPR).Media Mod Design:The Media Mod for the HERO11 adds a much more capable microphone and two mounting shoes for the Light Mod (one on the top and the other on the right side). There are also three additional ports, a Micro-HDMI, a USB-C, and a 3.5mm port for an external microphone. The Media Mod has no mounting legs of its own. A slot in the bottom of the housing allows access to the camera’s mounting legs. While there is a molded cutout in the shell, the mounting screw is cumbersome to use (at least for me).Light Mod Design:The 10-LED light is quite bright. There are three selectable brightness levels and two-pulse strobe effect (for which I see no useful purpose). A diffuser is included to soften illumination. A USB C port is used to charge the internal battery. Note, this is not a flash! The shoe on the Light Mod has no contacts for synchronizing with the camera. It does come with a two-footed mounting shoe toVolta Design:This is, perhaps, the most useful component of the Creator package. The integrated battery and capability to use as a remote are well considered. The Volta has a USB C male cable that can be used to charge the HERO11, Light Mod, or any other USB C device (e.g., smartphone) and a female USB C port for charging the internal battery. The Volta has two mounting positions. The top position includes is a three-leg mount with a “nut” for use with a mounting screw. The side position has only two legs and can only be used with another three-leg mounting attachment with a mounting screw nut. There are two such mounting attachments with the kit, but they only attach to a slip-in mounting bracket. It is not clear how the side mount can be used with the Creator accessory Mods. The Volta includes an additional battery door that allows access to the HERO11 USB C port.GoPro Quik Software Design:The GoPro Quik Software is designed to allow control of the HERO11 using a smartphone. It is easy to setup and use. The app can be used to turn the HERO11 on and off and to control all features of the HERO11, to preview the image on the sensor, to live-stream audio and video, and to upload images to the GoPro cloud (a trial subscription for the latter is included). The app also has access to all images and photos on your smartphone, your local network, and cellular data. I am not entirely comfortable with default settings. On my iPhone, I was able to restrict access to images, local network, and cellular data. Because the connection between the app and the camera is via WiFi, the contents of the SD card cannot be viewed unless local network access is enabled.GoPro Player Design (for Windows 11)I could not get this app to perform reliably on Windows 11 using a local admin account.GoPro Webcam design (for Windows 11)Could not get app to connect with HERO11 using a local admin account.

The GoPro Hero11 Black! In the box you get the GoPro Hero11 camera, a mounting screw, a mount, a USB Type A to Type C charging cable, and an Enduro battery!Coming from the GoPro Hero10 Black and looking at the specs of the Hero11, i was not too impressed until i actually starting using it. I love playing tennis and occasionally will bring out the GoPro Hero10 with me to record myself so i can work on my form, technique, and footwork. With the Hero10 and Enduro battery, i notice that the hot weather usually causes it to overheat around the ~30 minute mark, more or less due to the temps outside. With the Hero11 and the Enduro battery, i encountered overheating issues around the ~45 minute mark when shooting side by side with the Hero10 in ~95° weather… At first glance, it appears that the Hero10 & Hero11 are identical in terms of the body, so there may be something else that is affording better heat management (perhaps a more efficient CPU).When reviewing the footage, i did notice that the color reproduction of the Hero11 was much more rich, and this is due to the 10bit color recording feature! Just wow! The banding is just so much more smooth and very evident, especially if you are recording backdrops with gradients. Another great feature that i appreciated was that the Hero11 has full horizon lock, meaning regardless of the tilt of your camera, the video would be locked per the horizon. On the Hero10, i bought the Max Lens to achieve this same effect as the tilt limit was ~45°, but no more need for that on the Hero11! This was a very much appreciated feature because when the balls come flying into the fence where my GoPro is mounted, it may tilt due to the sheer force but because of the full horizon lock, video footage still appears as intended! Hypersmooth 5.0 on the Hero11 also faired very well on this particular shot as well, as there was much less noticeable camera wobble/shake when the tennis balls made contact near the fence where the GoPros were mounted compared to the Hero10.Because the Hero10 & Hero11 are practically identical, i was able to use all my mods from my Hero10 on the Hero11. Technically, if you have any mods/accessories for the Hero9, it’ll work with the Hero11 as well :PAs i mentioned before, from a specs to specs comparison with the Hero10, the Hero11 seems a tad bit underwhelming as it’s appears to be small spec bumps here and there. However once you try it out for yourself, there is no doubt the Hero11 is indeed the best and you can’t help but just marvel at how GoPro manages to keep bringing great improvements to what it always seems an already awesome action cam!I would highly recommend the Hero11 for hardcore active users! If you’re on a budget though, the Hero10 is still a great option for $50 less :)

Great Camera and Suite - Some Poor Design Choices

GoPro has established itself as the one to beat in the realm of action/lifestyle cameras. They make outstanding versatile cameras. They make outstanding versatile cameras. And while you can find thrilling and flashy captures of snowboarding and whatnot on their site, I think the best advertising they have for their products can be found on their YouTube channel: see GoPro: Pelican Learns to Fish (filmed on a GoPro HERO4) and GoPro: Lions – The New Endangered Species? (filmed on a GoPro HERO3). The video captures from much older cameras hold up beautifully and GoPro technology and video quality has escalated SIGNIFICANTLY since then. Recent cameras have truly mind boggling capabilities. And the new HERO11 is stellar in almost every way. This new offering boasts a few new features that differentiate it from the HERO10: a larger sensor, 10-bit color, improved video stabilization, better battery life, and a new 8:7 aspect ratio capture that allows you to select video/photo cropping that best suits your audience (think: Instagram vs. YouTube – Vertical vs. Horizontal). The options for this camera are a little bit overwhelming for people like me who are unfamiliar with GoPro cameras. There is NO product manual included with the camera (or with this suite of tools) - the full manual is nearly 160 pages in the English-only version so I can understand the difficulty in providing this in multiple languages. However, there are plenty of resources online to hold your hand and get you started quickly with the navigation and features on this magnificent camera. The base camera without any accessories is waterproof to 30+ feet. And while this is a very desirable feature, it also leads to one of my strongest dislikes about the design of the camera itself. To charge the camera, you must either remove a side panel to charge below the inserted battery (which is not locked-in) or use a separate side panel that does not appear (?) to make the camera’s charging port waterproof. This full panel keeps the charging port protected from water, but there are plenty of options that could have protected this port on the exterior of the camera. It is such a crazy inconvenience that I cannot understand how it is part of a release from a company with over 10 years of experience with these cameras.Included with this extended creator edition is a media mod – an enclosure for the camera which provides stellar ,clear audio capture, and ports for charging and for an external microphone input – the enclosure closes around the camera with the side panel off (the same panel that must be removed to charge the battery directly). But since the media mod ports are waterproof, I don’t understand why some simpler port protection could have been in place for the base camera. Why not simply have a base camera that charges directly and can also be enclosed in a case that provides additional options? The camera mounts on stabilizing units by way of pull down flaps. The creator edition includes a multipurpose grip/tripod which can be charged separately to provide extended battery life to the HERO11. The tripod, when connected directly via USB-C to the camera, is supposed to allow you to control the camera by way of buttons on the grip – I was never able to get any of these controls to work through an established USB connection. However, the grip can also be used to control the camera via Bluetooth (which works completely once the camera is turned on and connected). The grip/tripod is very well constructed and is easily the best selling point of this suite of items in this creator edition. But I’m disappointed that it can’t control the camera directly when connected. The camera sports some truly impressive features for low-light and night photography and time-lapse video, but these options really need use of a tripod. Night captures can be amazing but tend to require longer shutter speeds that aren’t useful for human subjects. A curious and welcome addition to this kit is a rechargeable led light with an attachable diffuser to provide fill-in light for close subjects in low-light conditions.Because this camera has front-facing and rear-facing screens, even this new extended-life battery seems a little bit weak – especially for people who are much more active than I am. I’m getting usable base camera time of under an hour – with the charged grip attached, I can get closer to three hours. I really think a complete creator edition might be better served by an extra battery. Usable times I’m getting are considerably short of advertised operating estimates.Overall, this is an outstanding five-star camera with some external problems that make it something less than five-star recommendable (at least to me). But as for the photo/video capabilities of the GoPro HERO11, this is absolutely the one to beat (and, for sure, the one that any other contender is going to be compared to). My own objections to technical details aside....there are countless GoPro videos online that capture lifestyles way more exciting than my own and I have never seen a single one that I would argue is an inauthentic representation of what this brand is capable of.

Great Camera, But So Many Pieces, No Instructions

I've been a fan of handheld cameras since the defunct Flip. I love my DJI Pocket camera, but I've never owned a GoPro before.Comparing the two side-by-side, the GoPro is absolutely more versatile than the Pocket in terms of environmental situations, and falls in line with the new Osmo Action series. The glaring difference between those two options is that the GoPro has a vastly different software offering and accessories pack. In this case, when you open the box for the GoPro Hero11, there are two full layers of accessories, add-ons, different kinds of case attachments, and very, very little information on what each one does.In terms of the software, the GoPro operates perfectly without it, but it seems to offer a lot in the way of automatic uploads of clips, ... MoreI've been a fan of handheld cameras since the defunct Flip. I was able to use the app AND the on-screen interface to change modes, modify settings, and get things working how I wanted them to.During testing, I recorded a 2-hour long speaking event. The video was fantastic and easily customized and adapted to audio was very, very good and the battery lasted for the entire event while attached to the tripod handle thing (which also has a USB-C charger - and a similar lack of instructions). What I could not figure out was how to attach the tripod and have it connected to power the GoPro and also have the exterior mic case all at the same time.On unboxing, I had no clue what all the various attachments were or how to utilize them, the style of how to open/attach/detach is spring-based and also hard to figure out with no tips, and there's no included instructions on how to set up the various attachments for different scenarios (this is the ONLY reason for a 4 out of 5) -- any time you have to have an app to figure out how to do assemblies of pieces, that's a recipe for wasted time and frustration. The *only* thing missing from the mountain of accessories in-box was an extra battery. All in all, this GoPro seems really well suited for folks upgrading from another GoPro; as an intro to GoPro, it's a little overwhelming but if you have time before the thing you want to film, it's not as big of a deal. The attachments seem to allow you to do all sorts of great things on the go, and in terms of the one thing you want it to be able to do: film good video in a number of different environments, it's perfectly suited.

Great package for content creators - and everyone!

GoPro has done it again - every time you think that they've gone and created the perfect action camera, they find a way to one-up themselves. I've recently upgraded to this HERO11 package from my old HERO8 (which I've loved over the years) and it's a much bigger improvement than you'd think! The color front screen - added from the 9 series on is the biggest improvement - but the Enduro batteries really change the battery life paradigm and the added resolution makes a big difference EVEN if you don't intend to have a finished video on 4K (though, why wouldn't you?). Having a higher resolution / more capable sensor allows the SuperView / image stabilization to work far better than on my older 8 series and significantly better than on the 9 or 10 as well. And, really, isn't that what you want from an action camera? Higher framerates and the new "easy" mode (which really does act like an easy button for great footage) also improve the video experience and make for faster (and easier) editing in post-production.For content creators, this creator edition package really shines - you get everything you need in one nice carrying case. The camera of course, but a whole bevy of accessories that improve the experience. You get the absolutely essential Media Mod which I've had in prior flavors and includes a vastly better microphone (plus the ability to connect an external mic for even better sound, always a GoPro weak point out of the box), an output for a monitor to view footage on a bigger screen as you're shooting (big for creators so you know what you're getting) and the ability to charge while you go. Plus two cold shoes! One of those will be occupied by the rechargeable Light Mod that also comes in the package (the other likely by an external microphone) - the Light Mod is adjustable, BRIGHT and long-lived on battery, in other words, everything you want from a light for shooting action footage. Also included in the package is the Volta grip which is not only a handy grip, but also a tripod, remote control (via Bluetooth) and a battery that can charge the GoPro on the go to vastly extend battery life. You can use this with or without the Media Mod (the package also includes the USB passthrough door which you can use to charge while on the go without leaving the battery exposed, a big plus). All in all, it's a great package of items for content creators or ANYONE looking to take great videos. One thing that doesn't come in the package is a MicroSD card and I HIGHLY recommend a V30 capable card for best performance at the high resolutions and high framerates. In fact, the camera will warn you if you don't put in such a card. Add the card, charge the batteries and you're off!I can highly recommend the GoPro HERO11 for action cam fans, content creators or anything looking to take great videos on the go.

I was so impressed by the detail on different items/areas in the picture, the 27 MP camera/sensor works perfectly. Now the biggest things that makes GoPro one of the best at what they do is the software and how easy everything is to use. For instance as with any product there is always an update when you open it now a days and at times the updates are a pain, this was not the case here. The updated downloaded and installed easily and without issue and after that the gimbal updated by it self when it was plugged into the GoPro, couldn’t have been any easier. The settings in the GoPro are simple and its such a plus that the app allows you to change them instead of having to only adjust them from the camera screen. Speaking of the app (Quik) its great and very easy to use and the cloud feature are a nice to have feature, i personally enjoy the Mural portion of the app which groups together your selected videos/pictures and creates little videos for you to view/edit. The free version works well but the subscription does have its perks to help with editing but I wouldn’t say its something that’s going to replace your laptop. GoPro does a great job with their software and has improved on how well hypersmooth works and added a new “horizon lock” feature which locks the sky in place regardless of how your holding the camera. I know this may sound gimmicky but its anything but that, horizon lock does wonders when shooting moving action. There are so many time lapse features to mess with that it would make this review even longer than it is lol but the features in Timelapse make it so easy to do certain things (startrails, vehicle lights) that otherwise would take some time and know how. Like I said this little camera is loaded with features and is a must have.

Instead of "viewfinders" now they have fully integrated dual full color digital LCD screens. One smaller one on the front and a wider touchscreen version on the back with all of the details right there on the screen with bright clear color icons as well. The features on this thing are crazy! 3 Viewing fields, 16:9, 4:3, and now 8:7. You've got the option of 4k or 5.3k, 60, 30, or 24 frames per second. The newer 8:7 ratio at 5.3k now gives us 24.7 million!! pixels, compared to the older 5.3k at 16:9 ratio which was a mere 15.8 million pixels. You've got ProTune options that allow you to adjust Bit rate, shutter speed, white balance, your iso ratio, and your exposure value. And now a 10 bit capability versus the 8 bit they used to have which was roughly 16 million and now 10 giving you roughly 1 billioooon megapixels (Dr. Evil in Austin Powers voice) haha which gives you a real clarity upgrade and richness in color. The lens options they give you are Linear + Horizon Lock (full 360 degree rotation) which in my opinion was the coolest because you could basically twist the camera all the way around upside down but the video stayed straight forward the entire time upside down or right side up, Linear 19-39mm, Wide 16-34mm, Superview 16mm, and Hyperview 12mm.Another really cool option is night mode! You can really get some trick shots that you normally see only done with DSLR's. One mode is Star Trails which if you set your camera outside aimed up for a while its a time lapsed shot that captures the stars moving but gives the effect that you see when you're watching Star Wars and about to jump into hyperspace where they all become lines instead of stars. The next one is Vehicle Lights, again time lapsed shots of cars or traffic passing by giving you a constant stream of light which makes for some awesome shots. Then there is Light Painting where you set the camera out and you can take any light source in your hand and make designs in the air or even air write your name or make shapes and the camera time lapse gives you that full shape or design. I've done this with DSLR's which you have a lot more settings to deal with to get this right so being able to do these at the touch of a button here makes me love this little camera even more.Everything included is the HERO11 Black camera itself , a nice hard shelled carrying case that's big enough for all of the included accessories and camera itself, Enduro Rechargeable Battery, curved adhesive mounts, mounting buckle + thumb screw, USB type C cable and free SD card.I would definitely recommend this to others!
