The Volta Grip also pairs with the camera over Bluetooth, and can also work as a wireless remote as long as you're not too far away from the camera.I really enjoyed using the camera to capture all sorts of memories and content. The image quality was amazing and the battery life was more than I expected, but I ran into 2 odd scenarios that caused me to bump the rating from 5 to 4 stars. First, while you can connect the GoPro to a Mac or PC over USB-C cables, I had trouble reliably porting videos from the camera's SD card onto my laptops. Since I usually keep the GoPro inside the Media Mod case, I rely on the camera's USB-C port for connecting to my computer.I ended up having to remove the case, which takes some work, remove the memory card from the camera and plug it into my laptop in order to successfully transfer videos. Since the Media Mod case is meant to be a rugged type case to allow for connecting different accessories, this is a pain since the Media Mod case's release clamp is very tight.And since we're on the subject of USB connectivity, I also noticed that GoPro offers an app that lets the camera be used as a webcam. I thought, 'Cool, I can use this for content on the go as well as creating content directly from my laptop.' However, I found that for some reason, GoPro limits the camera's video resolution to 1080p and, what I imagine is 30 FPS. With such a beefy camera that can record video in 5.3K HDR video, this feels like an artificial limitation over USB-C. I have not yet tried to use my 4K capture card yet to see if this works, so your mileage may vary if you go that route.All that being said, I really love creating content with this, and I feel much more secure using this camera in the outdoors for more exciting, high-speed fun recording!

Since the cord is coiled, it is pulling on the connector which made be feel a bit uncomfortable with the longevity of the USB-c port. Also, when you are not using the Hero12, donât leave the Volta grip plugged into the Hero12, it will continuously drain the Volta Grip Battery. Overall, the Creator Edition just enhances the value that the GoPro Hero12 Black already has in terms of video quality, stabilization, and portability. With the Creator Edition, it makes the GoPro Hero12 package a must carry everywhere because of how versatile the package makes recording high-def videos anywhere so easy.

Of course, a computer is needed, and the camera should be charged at least 50% and you NEED a microsd card (whether updating via the sd card with the software or having the sd card in and setting up on the smartphone app. Otherwise the update cannot proceed.I do also have a remote control accessory being the GoPro Remote Control, which I have used with my older GoPro, and was able to use it with the Hero12 and automatically updated the remote flawlessly as I havenât used it in a while.The menus and submenus differ just in a different order; There is a menu option of camera controls of having either easy or professional (which then shows the option of turning on and changing the level of the boost/smooth action for more stable movement and then changing what levels.I havenât played much with regarding recording and capturing footage, taking pictures, etc., but I believe the battery life will be much better than my previous GoPro, as comparing the battery sizes, this is a bigger battery and would last a bit longer even with the max settings on. I mostly plan on doing linear aspect ratio recording in the meantime which is good for gatherings and public events. As I do occasionally go cycling, I just may change it up a bit with a common 16:9 ratio.Also, thereâs a screw hole at the bottom (along with the 2-fold out hinges for GoPro tripods and mounting accessories); meaning youâre definitely not limited to just the GoPro accessories but can use any single screw tripod or mounting accessory which I even have an old on from the previous camcorder days. So anything of a tripod or a camera mount from way back when, definitely can start putting it to good use!

The lens on the front is water-repellent for capturing crystal clear footage underwater and the camera itself is waterproof up to 33 ft deep without any additional housing, as long as the battery bay door is completely closed and sealed. The camera is compatible with high capacity microSD cards with rating v30 or UHS-3, and I have a 512 GB card installed which can hold nearly 8 hours of footage at the highest resolution.When taking photos, the max resolution is 27 MP and it has a night mode that slows down the shutter speed for longer exposures. The front facing LCD on the camera is bright and hi-res and while smaller, is great for selfies and vlogging from in front of the lens as you can monitor your footage and framing without any additional equipment. It can also be disabled to increase battery life.The small size of this camera makes it ultra-portable and able to navigate spaces that other cameras just wouldnât fit in or would be cumbersome to maneuver. As a content creator, having a separate camera for 4K B-roll footage allows me to capture multiple vantage points. I especially like the built-in, high frame rate, slo-mo functionality for 2x, 4x, and 8x slow motion (5.3K, 4K, and 2.7K resolution respectively). I also really like the time lapse feature which has several modes to capture footage while on the move or stationary, and various night shots like star trails, light painting, and vehicle lights. Just note that the rear screen dims automatically after 45 seconds and goes black after 1 minute while recording, though you can wake it up again by simply tapping the touch screen. You also canât change any settings while the camera is actively recording.There are advanced camera settings for pros who want to manage each aspect of their recordings like EV, white balance, and ISO. You can even save pre-sets for each of the modes, so you donât have to change them every time you switch modes. Since the camera also captures audio, you can enable wind noise reduction which is useful if the camera is moving at high speed, or youâre filming in windy conditions. The camera is compatible with externals add-ons like the GoPro Max lens mod 2.0 (177° FoV, sold separately), Bluetooth earphones, and wireless microphones.If you subscribe to GoProâs cloud service (pay a monthly fee) you can have the camera automatically upload your recordings to the cloud with unlimited backup storage. The GoPro Quik app lets you edit your footage with a handful of tools like filters, digital lens, cutting, and cropping.Overall, the GoPro Hero 12 is an awesome camera for folks who film fast-paced action sequences and solo creators. If it sounds like a lot â it is. This is a very complete kit that includes just about everything you need to get started using your GoPro to capture your stories and adventures.To start, letâs take a look at the highlights of the included accessories. My favorite is the Volta Grip. I didnât appreciate how useful this thing would be until I got it out and paired to the GoPro. Not only does it serve as a large external battery, allowing around 5 hours of recording time, but it also is a remote control and even a tripod! It also has an included wrist lanyard and has a standard tripod thread on the bottom if you want to mount it to a larger tripod. The remote control is extremely handy â having controls at your fingertips instead of needing to reach out with your other hand to control the camera is great. Since the remote part pairs with Bluetooth, you can even use the grip off of the camera as a true remote control. The other accessories are also handy â the media mod allows for more connectivity, including mini HDMI out, analog input for an external mic, and a power input that doesnât require the door to be open. It also has a directional mic with a removeable (and included) wind filter. The mic can be configured for front, rear, or both, as the direction it focuses on. The light mod is also nifty. Itâs completely powered by an internal battery, so it can be used mounted to one of the cold shoes on the media mod, mounted to the included cold shoe to GoPro standard mount adapter, or wherever. At the highest setting it provides a lot of light, and the included diffuser keeps it from looking like a spot light in video. The other accessories are pretty self-explanatory and for the sake of brevity I wonât get into them in detail.On to the highlight of the kit â the GoPro Hero 12 itself. This yearâs model has blue flecks on the outer shell and a few under the hood improvements (and one take away) from the Hero 11. The 12 carries over the GP2 and image sesnor from the 11, but does make an improvement in Bluetooth support. A BT 5.2 module now allows for a Bluetooth microphone to be directly paired to the GoPro, which is great for narration or remote audio, and can even be used for voice command control. The 12 also has slightly better battery life and is supposed to run a little cooler, hopefully helping with overheating in hot and still environments. Part of the improved battery life and heat control is accomplished through the removal of the GPS unit. The 12 has no GPS, so if that was an essential feature for you, scooping up an 11 might be your better option here. Other than the Bluetooth changes, the other thing the 12 has is HDR Video support. To be clear â the GoPro does not RECORD in a HDR video format, like HDR10 or Dolby Vision. The HDR in this camera is combining two exposure frames into a single video frame with different exposure values, allowing for a wider dynamic range to be captured in the resulting single frame than the camera can do with just single exposure. The result is more detail in shadows and highlights, but at the cost of some of the highest FPS options. The 12 also supports up to 5.3k capture, 10-bit, and also has a LOG format for post-processing workflows for professionals. One other notable change is that the fold down âfingersâ on the bottom of the camera now also include a standard Tripod threading that is accessible with the fingers folded flat, which is great for using the GoPro on other types of mounts. The in camera menus are well laid out and the camera is very responsive.Video is, as expected, quite good in well lit scenes. The stabilization is amazing for something without a gimbal. Still pictures are OK, although even in linear the fisheye effect of the camera is still somewhat present. Itâs great for wide shots, and the resulting 27MP images do allow for a lot of flexibility in post to crop in tighter. As with most action cameras, low light is not great for video or stills. Low light photography remains something that is just extremely hard to accomplish on anything other than a large sensor camera, or using major AI boosts in a high end smart phone. The GoPro also has options for timelapse photography, and some kind of fun modes, like star light trails and light painting.Overall, the Hero 12 Creator Edition is a very complete package for a variety of ways to capture your stories and adventures. The Hero 12 camera itself is more iterative than revolutionary this year, tweaking a couple of features from last yearâs 11 but keeping most of the same components. If you are looking for a first action cam, or upgrading from an older GoPro and want to get a bundle with some of GoProâs best accessories, this is the kit to be looking at.

In 2023, youâre getting larger color displays on the front and rear that get plenty bright for monitoring in bright outdoor conditions, you get much larger buttons, a better (albeit not great) built-in speaker, better internal microphones, and built-in mounting hardware for GoPro accessories and ÂŒâ-20 threading for standard camera hardware.Toss it into the Media Mod enclosure and it feels even more rugged and durable. Plus, youâre getting front and rear microphones with the Media Mod, so youâll have improved audio compared to the internal camera. And with two cold shoe mounts on the Media Mod enclosure, you can add the Light Mod and other cold shoe accessories. However, I found that I could not use the built-in threading for camera mounts while the Media Mod enclosure was attached. Thankfully, I did have a standard GoPro to ÂŒâ-20 threading adapter of my own, but I do think GoPro could have included this adapter in the Creator Edition since the customer is potentially losing some compatibility when using just the Media Mod. More on that in a moment.One distinction I should mention however is that this older Hero 5 Black had built-in Micro HDMI which is now only possible with the Media Mod on the Hero 12 Black. So if youâre coming from an older GoPro and havenât paid attention to all the changes since then, itâs probably worth noting this one regression should it matter to you. Other than that, I consider the Hero 12 Black to be a full upgrade for older GoPro owners.The Volta battery grip is also quite useful for creators who find themselves needing a grip stick for better handling, want a mini tripod, need a wireless remote, or just need a bit extra battery. The Volta does it all with your GoPro, and itâs my favorite part of the Creator Edition kit since it gives extra versatility to correctly capture the moment under numerous circumstancesâwhether you need to be hands-on or hands-free. One lesser known feature about the Volta is that it actually has camera threading on the bottom so you can attach the Volta to ÂŒâ-20 threaded camera hardware. So if you intend to use the Media Mod on a tripod or just want the battery charging when youâre not shooting, then this would be one way to achieve that.SETUP:Setup requires a firmware update out-of-box which will prompt you during the setup process with the GoPro Quik app. GoPro has always made it easy to discover new devices via Bluetooth, so I found the pairing process to be super easy and intuitive. And while they do ask if youâd like to create a GoPro account or subscribe to their cloud services, you can also just decline those and Continue as a guest in the app. This is my personal preference, and I hope they continue to respect that choice for customers.SOFTWARE:The operating system on the GoPro hardware is really not so different from older GoPros. If you want an easy out-of-box experience, it can absolutely give you that, but as the name implies, if you want to go pro, it can also let you dial in a ton of different image settings for field of view, frame rate, 8-bit vs 10-bit color, SDR, HDR or Log profiles, and others for audio.It would be hard to list everything out, but I think the important thing here is that if youâre well-versed in photo or video, then there are absolutely a ton of settings that can allow you to dial in the right picture and even capture a separate audio track with or without processing should you be interested in editing your audio in post.Moreover, the Hero 12 Black has support for 5GHz WiFi for faster wireless transfer speeds and live previewing if you choose to use the companion app for these features. If you want to live stream to Twitch or YouTube (achievable through the mobile app), you can also use the Hero 12 Black over WiFi for that, but you could also use the GoPro Webcam app for desktop if you plan to use it tethered to your computer over USB.Also, with Bluetooth onboard, you can use a pair of wireless headphones to hear better audio quality during playback as opposed to using the onboard speaker. GoPro also states you should be able to use the microphone on your bluetooth headphones to record, but I was unable to find this option in any of the settings, so hopefully GoPro makes this capability a bit more intuitive.MOBILE APP:The mobile app facilitates all of the same controls available on the hardware itself, just controlled via Bluetooth. As previously mentioned, you can also transfer media through a WiFi Direct connection with your GoPro, and also get a low-latency live preview over WiFiâwhich is significantly better than Bluetooth monitoring.Moreover, you can preview your recorded media on the GoPro itself (in lower resolution) without having to transfer the files to your phone, which is very convenient for quickly reviewing your footage. And of course you can also begin recording from theYou can also set up auto-uploads to the cloud using GoProâs subscription service, and you can initiate live-streaming to Twitch or YouTube using the app, but I did not test these services.IMAGE QUALITY:The quality of each pixel out of the GoPro Hero 12 Black certainly wonât compete with modern flagship smartphones, but thatâs not exactly the point of it. Under excellent lighting conditions, the Hero 12 Black excels in its motion smoothing capabilities and delivers a sharp, vibrant, punchy image. Under less ideal lighting conditions, youâll find that it yields a softer, noisier image.I mounted the Hero 12 Black directly to my electric scooter, and across a variety of different terrains, the footage was always very smooth, and with the Horizon Lock capability, I was able to retain a very stable image as though it were mounted to a gimbal. By comparison, the same test on my smartphone yielded incredibly shaky footage. Of course I had to use different mounts for my phone and GoPro, but without a doubt the GoPro processes shaky footage significantly betterâespecially with the HyperSmooth + AutoBoost feature. That being said, in lower lighting conditions and/or at lower framerates, the footage could be more shaky. You could certainly use the Light Mod to improve your lighting conditions, but in general, youâre going to yield the best results when recording in good lighting conditions.As far as the different wide angle views are concerned, I found that the 12mm HyperView had way too much warping on the edges for my taste and the 16mm SuperView also had some warping, but wasnât as aggressive. So I think I will stick to Wide or Linear for situations where I donât want warping (like peopleâs faces).If you decide to capture still photos, the GoPro really doesnât do anything better than most flagship smartphones these days. In general, the GoProâs onboard hardware just doesnât have the computational power to do the kind of processing that modern smartphones have. But itâs still nice to have the optionâespecially with the option to take a very wide angle shot. I think the photos can be good (especially under excellent lighting conditions), but they wonât compete with the likes of modern smartphones. Using third party editing software can certainly alleviate some of these shortcomings, however.AUDIO QUALITY:Audio Quality on the Hero 12 Black is good but not at the level of flagship smartphones. You shouldnât expect much directionality, and you might get a lot of noise if youâre mounting on a bike or scooter, but I also wouldnât expect a smartphone to be great at handling audio for this, either.Using the Meda Mod with built-in microphones, youâll get better microphone quality in addition to being able to record both rear and front facing microphones at the same time, or choose just one to use. I personally like having this flexibility since there are some circumstances where having only one microphone recording makes more senseâespecially if wind noise is involved.BATTERY:GoPro claims that the Hero 12 Black can yield 1.5 hours at 5.3K@30fps or over 2.5 hours at [email protected] the Volta attachment, GoPro claims you can achieve over 5 hours of 4K@30fps footage. But itâs important to know that you cannot charge the Hero 12 Blackâs Enduro battery while it is actively recording, so the Volta will only charge the Hero 12 Black while itâs idle or powered off.Removing the Enduro battery from the GoPro, you can still power the GoPro directly from the Volta. So you shouldnât have any issues running out of battery.CONCLUSION:Overall, the GoPro Hero 12 Black is really another iterative upgrade from the Hero 9 platform, but for those who are coming from the Hero 8 or older, I think the Hero 12 does offer improvements in its hardware and platform to justify the upgrade. And the Creator Edition adds a ton of flexibility for recording a variety of different situations.

Camera operation is straightforward, and it didnât take me long to figure out basic operation and how to change various settings using the swipe-driven menus on the touch screen. The menu offers two control options: easy and pro. Easy is best for simple point and shoot use while pro provides a wider variety of settings and features. Even as a GoPro newcomer, I find the pro menu more useful. My only issue with the touch screen is sometimes it can be a little too sensitive while swiping and I occasionally find myself accidentally selecting settings that I didnât intend to select. There also doesnât appear to be any pinch to zoom or expand images like on my other digital cameras.The Hero 12 is waterproof down to a depth of 10 meters and requires no separate underwater housing. The removable door over the battery and micro-SD card compartment latches down tightly for waterproofing but isnât difficult to open, close or remove. There are only two physical buttons on the camera: mode and shutter. The mode button powers the camera on/off and switches shooting modes. It can also be used to tag hilights in a video. Hilights bookmark a particular section of the video so it can be easily located later within the GoPro Quick app or used for creating highlight reels. Hilights can also be tagged in the GoPro Quick app, though voice control, or on the touchscreen. The top mounted shutter button starts and ends video captures and snaps still photos. The shutter button also powers on the camera in Quikcapture mode. This is an instant record mode where the camera powers on and immediately starts recording video automatically. Pressing the shutter again stops recording and powers the camera off. Quikcapture is handy for frequent start and stop recording or spontaneous shots where manually powering on and recording may result in a missed photo opportunity.The Hero 12 has three main capture modes: still photos, video, and time lapse video. Video and photos look excellent in bright and moderate lighting, especially at higher video resolutions. HDR adds rich saturation, improved contrast, and vibrant colors to both video and still photos. RAW and log encoding are also available. The Hero 12 can record video at normal speed, slow motion, or time lapse. Available video resolutions include 5.3K, 4K, 2.7K, and 1080p and each resolution has multiple fps options. There are four aspect ratios available for video recording, including a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio. 9:16 not only captures media in a vertical format optimal for social media and phone viewing, but does so with the camera physically remaining horizontal. Video is exported in mp4 file format. Video recorded with the Hero is crisp and clear in most instances, and the hypersmooth stabilization works fantastic, keeping my footage stable regardless of how much I move or shake the camera. Two other helpful modes I enjoy using are horizon lock and horizon leveling. These modes keep the orientation level if the camera is tilted and horizon lock maintains orientation even through full 360-degree rotations.Still photos are captured in 27-megapixel resolution and files are exported in either JPEG or JPEG + RAW formats. The three primary photo modes are photo (regular shooting), burst (up to 30fps), and night (slow shutter). The digital zoom can shoot in linear or wide mode, but the wider the digital lens gets the more it introduces a fisheye effect.These are just a small sample of the Hero 12âs capture capabilities. There are numerous additional photo and video settings such as time lapse, slow motion, and interval photos available for a wide variety of scenarios and creative exploration.Battery life has been sufficient for my needs with the Enduro battery providing ample power for most of my uses. Battery life may vary based on settings and duration of use, but so far hasnât proven to be a problem for me. I donât typically shoot lengthy videos or stream with the Hero. Most of my footage typically consists of snapshots and 4K videos lasting ten minutes or less. I havenât experienced any issues with heat, which Iâve heard tends to sometimes be an issue with the Hero. The camera gets warm during use but I havenât encountered any freezing, shut down, or other thermal issues.Sound is another area where I am pleased with the Hero 12. The three-mic array has great sensitivity and records environmental sounds reliably. Even quiet ambient sounds are prominently heard in recorded video. Voices are clear and decipherable with no sync issues. There is also a wind noise reduction mode available if needed. The Hero has Bluetooth connectivity that allows the use of remote mics, ear buds, or headphones.The creator bundle contains content creator friendly accessories such as the Volta battery grip, media mod, rigid carrying case, light mod, an additional swappable battery door with USB cable pass-thru opening and a few mounts and thumbscrews. The media mod facilitates the use of other optional mods with the Hero 12 and provides three ports (USB-C, micro-HDMI, 3.5mm audio), two cold shoe mounts, and a built-in directional mic with removeable wind screen. The small rechargeable light mod attaches to the media mod via a cold shoe and has three static brightness settings (20, 60, and 125 lumens), a strobe mode, and a removable diffuser. The light mod is also waterproof up to 10 meters, however the media mod is not waterproof. The rechargeable Volta battery grip can function as a tripod, handheld grip, and remote. It can also charge the GoPro battery. The Volta grip/tripod, light mod, and media mod provide greater versatility for vlogging, social media, and photo/videography, but are also helpful and appropriate for general use.The rigid case was the only disappointing accessory in the bundle. Although the build quality seems good, the roomy interior is empty with no inserts or fasteners to secure or organize gear. Thereâs a mesh pocket in the lid, but itâs not a feasible option because even if I store the camera or other hardware in the mesh, it can still get struck by other loose items tumbling around inside the bag. Iâm puzzled why GoPro didnât include foam cutouts or some other more durable organization system rather than the disposable cardboard holders the system ships in. Those were perfect for organizing but the cardboard ripped immediately while I was removing the gear. I plan to try and find a solution to help keep everything better organized and protected inside the bag.Besides the case, Iâve only encountered two other minor cons with the Hero 12. The first is a lack of GPS for geotagging captured media. Itâs not so much an actual con, but rather more a would be nice to have. The second is that frequently, capture quality isnât the best in dim lighting. Dim light shooting produces noticeably more noise and loss of detail. Luckily, the light mod frequently comes to the rescue in those instances, particularly indoors.

There are also a few recording options, such as vehicle light trails, light painting, star trails, and slow motion, which are pretty slick. Battery life is supposed to be just over an hour at the highest resolution setting (but I have not tested that out).The camera also is designed to interface with their Quik application that provides the option of uploading automatically to the cloud (for an additional monthly fee, of course). The camera supports accessories such as a light, a directional mic, or a lens modification. It is even bluetooth capable so a bluetooth microphone (like earbuds) can be used to record audio with your video (again, a nice thing to have for podcasts). Simply stated there are more features on this camera than I will probably ever use.There are obviously less expensive options available when shopping for action cameras, but the GoPro is definitely feature rich and built for its intended purpose. GIven some of the challenges I had with the setup, I cannot rate it at 5 stars, but the camera is a solid 4-stars+ in my book.
