GU Original Sports Nutrition Energy Gel is the energy gel that started it all. In 1993, Dr. Bill Vaughn developed the world’s first energy gel to help his daughter perform better during ultra-marathons, and GU has been helping to propel the world’s most successful extreme athletes to success ever since. GU Energy Gel sustains all forms of athletic activity with a highly compact, portable, and calorie-dense packet that is loaded with carbohydrates that can be rapidly absorbed. Branched-chain amino acids limit muscle fiber damage and increase speed of recovery, and extra electrolytes help maintain water balance. Some flavors feature caffeine to increase concentration. While the original formula has been tweaked and evolved over the years, the end result is still the same: GU Energy Gels fuel the best endurance athletes in the world. GU Original Energy Gel comes in a wide variety of good tasting flavors. Each packet contains 450mg of Amino acids, 100 calories, and at least 21g total carbs.

Love using GU, and I believe they have loads of history and experience behind their name to make them one of the most trusted names in athlete nutrition. I’ve always enjoyed the large variety of flavors, caffeine amounts, and amino blends in their energy gel lines to give me the flexibility to choose which gels fit my needs. For me, they’ve always been easy to get down, even During hard efforts, and I’ve personally never experienced any discomfort or negative side-effects from using them.I like most of the GU Energy and Roctane gels, but my favorites are Hoppy Trails and Salted Watermelon. It’s actually really refreshing in flavor, not overly-sweet like some gels can be, and does not leave an aftertaste. It’s a great non-caffeinated option for me. Salted Watermelon is my favorite caffeinated option and again not overly sweet for me.

A Good and not to sweet flavor.

I am a big fan of “on the bike” nutrition products and hav used GU (and proper hydration) for many years to reduce/eliminate muscle cramping on during the longest and toughest rides.GU “Cola me happy” is a good flavor. It does not really taste like a soda but more like a cola bean. That said - it is not bad just different from initial expectation. It is pleasant and I have purchased more for the grab bag. Just wish it had a stay-on tear off tab to reduce litter.Just remember to stay hydrated, recharge before you need to, and never ever litter (if you drop something - turn around and get it) and try all the different GUs.

These energy gels taste great and give me a boost when I'm doing long cycling sessions or out doing hiking, but you don't have to be an athlete to benefit from them, even just moderate cardio can get you very exhausted. It's been difficult to find a good energy option that's caffeine free, but these were fantastic! When it feels like I'm getting tired and I'm thinking about needing to cut my adventure short, I open up one of these and within 10 minutes I feel like I'm back! My muscles come back online and I feel like I can keep going as long as I want. Definitely made a fan out of me!

Find your flavor that works.
31 July 2023

I have been using GU packs for all of my 40 marathons and the training since 2008. I highly recommend. That said, I get stomach issues from any of the fruity flavors, I can only do chocolate, vanilla and caramel. So fo you, you have to see if one type of flavor works best, Roctain or Regular. But they really work for me personally and I have run 10 Bostons, qualified IDK 15 times. 1 before the run or race and then 1 every 5 miles, but I do an EXTRA one at mile 17. No bonking. Whatsoever.

Recently tried PB Choc, Salted Caramel, Salted Watermelon, and Root Beer. Still not sure what took so long to combine PB and Chocolate but so glad it finally happened. Perfect blend of both flavors and its surprisingly smooth, thought would be a little thick (like PB and chocolate separately are) but it is blended really well and tastes great. Salted caramel was my #1 choice all of last year and its still in the top 3 but salted watermelon has now taken over the top spot. Mainly because I like the fruitier taste, especially on longer workouts in the heat. Salted caramel was great for the first couple of hours in 85= temps but in the fifth hour it got a little hard to put down. Was very impressed with the taste and was happy that it was not too strong of a root beer taste but just enough to satisfy the craving. On long runs I start craving pop and this will be great for that.

My Favourite Race Gels
25 January 2023

I'm a trail runner and spend hrs in forests. I have a sensetive stomach + reflux. Many says GU is thick , yes but calms my stomach down. Since you have to drink water during a long race, thickness doesnt really bother me. they are small so makes it easy to carry. Also different flavors really helpful for my stomach&taste ,too. For xmiles, reallly fast shipping! thank you!

Some flavors are good, some are REALLY bad
10 July 2023

Ok, so overall I'd say most flavors are quite decent and don't taste awful. But there is one that brings the whole thing down, and that's the Raspberry Lemonade. I figured I'd love it since I like the fruity gels, and I love lemonade. So imagine my surprise when I take one out for some quick fuel 13 miles into an 18 mile hike and about to start on a 3800' elevation gain, and it tastes like neither raspberry or lemonade. The best way to describe the taste would be like how Clorox wipes with Febreze smells. That's what this one tastes like. Or some kind of artificially fruit scented floor cleaner. It is BAD. Like, want to immediately barf bad, gotta drink my entire bladder of water to get this out of my mouth bad. TRI-BERRY TASTY
20 September 2023

Tried the TRI-BERRY flavor, after other flavors that I like, this was a tasty treat. I like sweets.I have experimented with the energy gels' using', 'not using', 'after30 minutes' changing timing, on a controlled 33 mile route I pedal for workouts, consistent temperature, water intake and time of day; I have found that when I delay or skip the gels, I can tell the difference in energy/firepower. Ingesting a gel later is better than not, as I sense a pick up 5-6 miles down the route. Cold water, small recovery segments and GU gels have made a big difference in performance.

For the weight/calorie/size ratio, this is one of the more portable foods. I usually carry PBJ/applesauce/fig bars or something I can get from the grocery store but they can take up more space. Replacing some of the calories from the "real" food will help free up some space.I don't like sweets and I think this affects my judgement of the flavors. I just try to gulp it all down in one go and chase with water.

Varied flavours
4 April 2023

I’ve tried the salted caramel, salted watermelon and campfire s’mores. My favourite is easily the campfire s’mores, I loved this flavour! I tried two of the salted watermelon and didn’t love it the first time but did love it the second. The salted Carmel’s are also a great choice but couldn’t stomach them after a while. They need water with them, but are good for being a bit different.
