A gel that’s a liquid

I have used gels in the past, but just if someone hands it to me during a race. They are sometimes hard to eat, especially if it’s cold out. GU Liquid Energy Gel is really a liquid, so it’s is easier to pour down your throat, but it’s a bit messy. The outside of the packets were already sticky when I opened the box. Like any gel packet it’s hard to open with sweaty hands. The flavor is coffee, but I would say it’s more like a sugary “coffee essence” and artificial tasting. I couldn’t really stomach the consistency, it was like a dense liquid and there was way too much of it. You couldn’t save it for later, it was all or nothing. I can see the benefit if you can’t drink coffee before a workout, but I can. If you like gels but wish you could drink them fast, then this is for you.

I've seen these liquid energy gels floating around in stores for a while now - never really considered getting them but let me tell ya, they have been pretty great in giving you that emergency boost of energy. I've had the opportunity to try these out a few times on longer and more strenuous hikes. Its definitely much easier to carry in my hiking bag compared to other snacks. The small pouches are easily consumable and gives you a quick dose of energy, letting you complete the trail while saving your tired muscles and bones. You do feel it rather quickly, one minute you're tired and dehydrated the next you get that extra boost to reach the finish line. I think the caffeine amount is just right, I don't get any jittery feelings afterwards. The taste is pretty decent. I opted for the orange one as I felt it would be the least disgusting. The orange is just ok. Its not great, but its not bad neither. Its definitely not a flavor where I'm like, "wow, I am kind of craving this orange flavored gel." To be fair, when you're sweaty and tired, you're not going to care about some great tasting treat anyways. You essentially just suck down the pouch and go your merry way. For its purpose, it works. While it does market itself as energy "gel", I did feel that the consistency is definitely more on the liquid side than gel. It might've tasted slightly better if it was more jelly-like.All in all, its a pretty good product - it tastes like orange, not great, but not bad neither - and the little pouch goes a long way as its perfect to have on you for that quick boost of energy.

Efficient fuel with a chalky/carby aftertaste

With that being said, the thin nature of the gel made it easy to spill out of the package onto my clothes and made it difficult to regulate how much I was squeezing in my mouth while consuming. In one instance I didn't squeeze all of the product into my mouth and it got all over my clothes, making them really sticky.Even when I didn't spill the gel on my clothes, it often spilled a little onto the empty package, making it extremely sticky and necessary to put into a plastic bag to avoid getting your clothes sticky.Last, I wish that this package had the ability to keep the part that you tear off attached to the package to avoid unintentionally littering while using this product on the trail.

The ingredient breakdown of this is totally good. No real complaints on fueling with this from a nutrition standpoint. I have mainly used this on 1-2 hour bike rides, but I would be happy using this for 6-12 hour endurance events. This energy liquid is a good option for those who struggle with gummies or thick gels. I think a lot of people would do well with this as a liquid. However, I have a few minor complaints. Mainly, this has sour-fruity taste, and is particularly sweet. When I go for a coffee flavored gel/liquid, I choose it because it tends to be a break from the nothing but sweet sugary-tasting nature of most of these products.Additionally, the tear-off on this packaging is not ideal for use while actively cycling or running. I don't want to have to keep track of an empty pouch and a tiny tab in my cycling jersey. All things considered, it's a decent product and I would be happy to take this at a feed-station on endurance events, but would not be my first choice.

GU Liquid- skeptic to fan

I consume a lot of mid activity snacks. I mean a lot. It’s one of my guilty pleasures. From sport jelly beans to packs of caffeinated honey to gels of various consistencies and gummie cubes, I think I’ve tried everything at one time or another. GU Liquids are a completely new category to me, and at first I was skeptical about this large pouch of slightly thickened liquid, but after numerous uses it has won me over. The size and shape of the pouch is such that it fits unobtrusively in your pocket while running or hiking. The advantage of the liquid over the regular packs became readily apparent on the hottest day this summer has dished out so far on Central Virginia. On a day when sport beans seemed like salty soft rocks and the thought of squeezing a think syrup into my mouth with gulps of water invokes a slight gag reflex, the Liquid pouch was actually refreshing! I didn’t feel the need to chase the Liquid with gulps of water, and it offered the same caffeinated boost I crave from gels. I don’t know if this style of mid activity refreshment is the new norm in terms of calorie delivery, but I’m a big fan of GU Liquid. This will be something I seek out in many different flavors and styles over the rest of the summer.

These seem to work well as advertised. Took on a 12-mile, six hour hike in WNC and had three spaced 45 minutes to an hour apart. Definitely provided a lot of energy and no jitters. A friend used one on a long run and also thought performance was strong. Think they can provide an extra bit of push to keep going when you are starting to feel weary.I like the size and they are very efficient in that sense. I could fit six in one of the tiny hip belt pockets on my day hike pack, which is saying a lot since most reviewers of that product suggest the pockets are so small they are essentially worthless. Not that it was necessarily bad (no stevia or artificial sweetener), but I never really consume soft drinks, especially not when putting in miles, so it almost felt like I was going through a fast food line when I had these. My friend had the same review—said it was weird to feel like she was drinking Coke while on a run. Wish they were something more refreshing or citrusy, though that often risks tasting synthetic. In any event it’s hard to associate a product like Coke with endurance exercise.Depending on the price and what I have planned, I might put my own money toward these in the future. Can’t beat free (in exchange for review) though.

Great product - highly recommend

I absolutely love GU Liquid Energy! It is so much better than original GU gels, or most other "gels" for that matter. The fact that it is liquid makes it much easier to drink, and it is easier on the stomach. As coffee drinker, I am especially fond of the coffee flavor; the taste is good, and it doesn't get old, even after multiple hours on the trail. The caffeine boost provided is also a nice touch in the late stages of a race. I will continue to rely on this product in my training and racing endeavors, and I suggest anyone that has an aversion to normal "gels" give this product a shot. I think you will like it.

Much Preferable to Other “Gels”

There are a few things I look for in an energy gel - easy to handle, great taste, caffeine free, and no ill side effects, and this meets all those requirements. I’ve tried these on a few occasions such as after a run and during longer bike rides and realized that I really like the consistency of this product. It’s more liquid than a gel and I wouldn’t really call it a gel at all. There’s no need to take a drink of water to wash it down. It’s very easy to consume and the lemonade flavor tastes great. I’m sensitive to caffeine, so I’m glad they make at least one flavor without it, but I do wish there were more caffeine free options. Sweet energy

The Orange w/caffine GU Liquid Energy Gel tastes very close to orange juice, very sweet but not too sweet, and surprisingly not artificial tasting. I poured a packet into a glass and expected it to look like orange juice based on the taste, but it was mostly clear with a little yellow haze. The consistency is thicker than water, but lighter than maple syrup (much more liquid than gel). Is it effective? Who knows, as there is no way to do the exact same activity starting with the exact same starting condition, taking GU one time and no GU the next (not to mention not being able to do the experiment blind). Would I rather do a long bike ride with only water or with water and GU? Definitely with GU. Energy bar or GU -- I could go either way, and going forward I'll probably mix it up, or for very long outings, maybe both. The only con I have is with the packaging; it's too easy to rip the top completely off when opening it, which creates an easy to lose piece of micro-trash. This can be avoided if you pre-mix it in with your water, but I prefer to have plain water available.

Tasty, easy to "drink" gel alternative

GU Liquid energy is a great way to vary up nutrition. I was worried that this product would end up being syrupy, but I'd describe it as slightly thicker electrolyte drink. I tried the lemonade flavor, and it was super tasty. I had no problem having three of these on a hot and humid long run day. The reason for not having 5 stars comes down to the packaging. First, they are about 2.5x the size of a normal Gu. Not a major deal breaker and obviously has to happen to be more liquid-y, but still a bit cumbersome. Second, the opening is tiny and narrow. They are a bit finicky to open while running and force you to kind of crush the entire package at once to eat them as opposed to sipping.
