A great recording option if you know how to use it!

My main reason for this review is to clear up some confusion. Some reviewers complain that this product is iOS only, and leave low stars because they could not use it. Others complain that it does not sound good when used without the app. The app is part of the system, it's essential to using it properly. It is very clear when purchasing. That's kind of like putting a mic in the back of a cab and then complaining the mic sound muddy. User error does not make a product defective. This system works fab on most fretted instruments with a thin sound hole, I have recorded with it on steel string, nylon, Uke, and it really saves time in a crowded control room going direct, it's possible to get useable good sounding tracks on rhythm parts. It's sensitive to room noise (not as much as an open mic) so you need to track on headphones the same as you would with a condenser) but much more forgiving about body movement than a mic. I would not use this for a melody part in a pro recording if you want a detailed and expensive sound, but it works well on tracking support parts quickly. You need the app, period. It's not made to used without it. Lastly, it's a good idea to read about compatibility before purchasing. It is made for IOS and does not state anywhere that it is android compatible. Lastly, the cable, it's possible that the reason it is so minimal is to minimize clunking and rustling against the face of the instrument since the cable is attached, it minimizes noise. Still, it is my biggest concern about this thing. It's a quality low noise cable but so ultra low mass that it's kind of concerning. I am cautious with it. I have had this unit two years and it has not been an issue but I am careful with it.

A lot of fun so far!

I read previous reviews about it, positive and negative, and decided it was worth a try in that it's not crazy expensive and I felt the pros outweighed the cons. Although I haven't explored all the features available yet, I can say this: the setup was simple, the interface works perfectly, and it's been nothing but fun so far-very user friendly! Looking forward to seeing how Garage Band fares with it, Tonebridge and AmpliTube work just fine so far. Physically, it isn't built to take much abuse, then again I didn't buy it to use as a hammer. Picked up a small foam lined case for it, and plan to make something that will be secured easily to an amp/whatever that will minimise stress on the cables/box. Overall:I'll start by saying that this review will focus on the interface itself, and not on the bundled mobile software - that's a different subject which I'll touch on, but it's not really the point. The point is, for what this is, it's pretty fantastic. What this is to me is a way to plug my guitar into my phone and headphones, hear "guitar amp" coming through the headphones in a convincing way, AND not bug the hell out of the lovely lady sitting next to me on the couch (let alone the neighbors) with the kind of volume that is required for these tones in the real world. Does it sound EXACTLY like a 100W stack rattling the windows and thumping my ribcage every time I hit those low palm-muted chugs? Does it sound EXACTLY like a 100W stack rattling the windows and thumping my ribcage every time I hit those low palm-muted chugs? Of course not - the physical feeling of the amp moving air is part of that experience, and this device is specifically trying to avoid that. BUT...When you dial in the software correctly, it SOUNDS like an amp. More than that, if you're using the right software, it sounds like a big room full of amps that I can't afford, which is very cool. You have to set the "Gain" knob on the interface right, but that's the case with anything - too hot and it distorts, not hot enough and the tone sounds wimpy. Easy to fix - roll that knob back and forth until it lights up green, back it off if the light turns red. The other "Volume" knob is even easier - if it's too loud coming through the headphones, turn it down; if not, turn it up. Easy. Now to touch on the software a bit - I haven't downloaded the version of Amplitube for PC that's included yet, largely because I already have the CS amps that I want loaded up in Amplitube 4 and 5 on the computer - and also because IK Multimedia expects us to pay for each version individually when switching from mobile to desktop, and I'm not willing to do that. I don't see any reason why those purchases can't carry over across different platforms, and I'm not going to buy them again. Besides, I have a desktop interface that I'm totally happy with (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2), so I wasn't buying this one for the laptop.I downloaded the mobile version of Amplitube for the iPhone, it loaded up and synced fine. As noted, I'm not buying any upgrades for this Amplitube version - AFAIC the bundled software should be good enough right out of the gate. However, just like the desktop version, the included models are underwhelming - not bad, just not really inspiring. For that, you have to buy the upgrades.Rather than giving IK more money for software I've already bought (in addition to this hardware), I took advantage of Positive Grid's sale on the first (paid) tier of Bias FX Mobile for $10, and NOW this thing is cooking. It's been a while since I played with Bias on the PC (mostly because my computer is old and cranky and doesn't load it very well), but maybe the phone just has better hardware or whatever - I do NOT care. Playing with settings on different amps and pedals, as well as different guitars with different pickups, everything comes through. From the crazy high-gain metal to ultra-clean single-coil tones to in-between bluesy stuff, it all comes through sounding like it should. I'm especially impressed with how well the interface translates the pick attack and volume/tone knob settings coming in from the guitars, this is something that modeling doesn't always do well and it's really cool that this little bit of hardware allows it to work right. Sound quality is excellent throughout; it does not sound like a cheap plastic box whatsoever. So, ignoring the bundled software, this is WELL worth the money, at least for playing on the couch while my girl is watching her shows (and especially when we're in bed and I can't sleep!). I haven't plugged in the "Amp Out" to an actual amp yet, but I expect that the performance will be as good as with headphones if not better. Same with the PC integration, I can't imagine that it will have any serious issues as an interface for a full-sized computer running good amp-sim software. As noted above, no headphone amp will ever provide the "Full Stack on 10" experience, but as long as you're not expecting that, you'll be happy with it.The only "below-5" ratings I included were:Quality: I would prefer that it be in a metal, rather than plastic, enclosure. I don't plan on gigging with it, but as an "on-the-go" device, I would like to see it as close to bulletproof as possible - guitarists are notoriously hard on our gear ;)Manufacturer support/Wow Factor: These are both due to IK Multimedia's lack of better software support infrastructure. I don't necessarily expect them to provide a LOT of extra software with a hardware device, BUT when I've already paid for software on one platform (Amplitube), there's no technical reason why that same software add-on (DLC, basically) shouldn't work with every version of the software. Boo.

Cheaply Made

I'd like to give this more stars, as it does exactly what I need it to do. I can record my electronic drums audio, and capture myself on my camera's video. Everything, including the packaging is the absolute cheapest material on the planet.I've been trying to make it work by using after-market cables, and different options, but now I can't even get it to connect to my phone. I'm completely out of ideas, and probably out of $130, plus all the additional cable connections I've purchased trying to get this to work.

Game changer for me personally...
11 June 2022

First of all I have to say that this thing works flawlessly for me. I love it and I'm slightly saddened by the fact that it doesn't have a perfect five star rating. There is ZERO (detectable) latency and the sound quality is as good and/or better than some interfaces that cost much more. But just to be clear, I do run it with an iPhone 13 Pro Max. I wouldn't really recommend running it with anything less. I also use Fl Studio Mobile as my DAW. This setup allows me to record guitar tracks anywhere. Something I've always been interested in. Think about that, recording great sounding guitar tracks anywhere. I can then easily transfer the tracks to Fl Studio on my home computer for further editing if needed. Anyway. Poorly designed clip and iOS only
17 March 2018

I was disappointed in the iiRig acoustic microphone. Firstly as mentioned it really needs their app and there doesn't seem to be one for android on a galaxy s7. The second issue is the clip is poorly designed in terms of compensating for fretboard thickness. On a Furch cedar top it was too thin and kept springing off. On an ohana uke its too thick and needs a finger on it to stop buzz. Some kind of putty might have helped here, but what it really needs is a better clip able to fit a wider range of fretboard thicknesses. It's flimsy and with a 3.5mm Jack I think you'd only really use it for sat down recording or playing. Eventually I used an iPad to get it working and it sounds ok, but nothing special. To give a comparison I used the app plugged into the audio input ... MoreI was disappointed in the iiRig acoustic microphone. To give a comparison I used the app plugged into the audio input of a small Roland mobile acoustic amp. It didn't sound nearly as good as a similar priced ' bug'stick on pick up fed into the guitar input. I found better results with a ukulele and think with some putty to stop the clip vibrating it could give reasonable results here. Feedback cancellation in the app worked quite well and the ability to choose different styles of guitars and a few effects adds a bit.The idea is good but it needs a little refinement and for me was probably a waste of money. It's not really up to performance work.

Revived An Acoustic/Electric Gone Bad
29 May 2017

I used this to revive an acoustic/electric guitar that had lost its electronics due to capacitor failure. Could have tried installing new caps, but this rig was the less expensive and less effort solution. It also works, whereas the alternative had a lot of risk for failure,Putting a mic into the sound hole isn't a new idea, but having a product built especially for this purpose is, at least for me. I used mics designed for clipping to your collar before, which was clumsy and could damage the guitar finish. This product eliminates both problems. I also like that it takes standard AA batteries rather than the coin types and works with rechargeable NiMH.The sound from my amp is very true to the acoustic sound once I figured out what setting works the best. I also like that it takes standard AA batteries rather than the coin types and works with rechargeable NiMH.The sound from my amp is very true to the acoustic sound once I figured out what setting works the best. That took just a few minutes, since the preamp is easy to understand and adjust. However, the mic does pick up a lot of noise from touching the guitar, so I had to reduce the gain on my amp and have to be careful otherwise. That's just what happens when using mics rather than piezo bridge pickups. Those who slap their guitars for percussion will likely consider this a feature.I'm not very concerned about the wire from the mic to the preamp being too skinny. Like playing the guitar, I just have to be careful with it. It's easier to deal with than a stick-on transducer I've used with a cable that picked up every little knock on it. Plus you get a zippered clam storage box to protect the unit while in the gear bag, so whatever damage that might happen would be on stage while setting up/taking down and actually performing. At this price, having a spare is well within my budget.

Works Great!
14 October 2022

Got this because I wanted to be able to record my guitar into garage band on my iPad. I chose this one because it said it would also work with a PC or a Mac as well as the iPad and iPhone. I have only tried it on the iPad and it worked great. I was able to plug in and try all the amp and effects options. The headphone jack is handy and the fact that it is so compact is even better. Makes it easy to get things down even without all the gear and interfaces. Excellent option.

Works Very Well With a Variety of Instruments
25 June 2017

I'll say this straight up right now, this works on a variety of different guitars. I've tested this on a steel string guitar, classical guitar, requinto, Portuguese and Brazilian cavaquinho, vihuela, and even a guitarron. As long as it has strings and a sound hole, your in business and this little mic does it all very well. It will pretty much catch anything that's nylon string or steel strings, doesn't matter much because I even has a custom stringed guitar with a crazy reentrant tuning and it still worked. Something to keep in mind. I read on a review that someone couldn't get it to stick to their guitar because their soundboard was too thick. This may be an issue for some guitars. Something to keep in mind. I read on a review that someone couldn't get it to stick to their guitar because their soundboard was too thick. This may be an issue for some guitars. It did have trouble latching onto the guitarron's soundboard as well as my vihuela's, but the mic is somewhat flexable, so keep that in mind too. It is possible to stretch the mic in such a way so that it can rest on the sound hole. Seems to me the material is rubbery, so it does allow the stretching. I bought this just to see how well it can pick up a guitarron to be honest. It does it pretty well, although I'll say it doesn't pick up the lowest A very well. Seems to me it had trouble picking up anything below 55hz, so keep that in mind. Some notes seemed to clip a bit when picking them up also.It does pick up the treble sound of the guitarron as well, but if you have say an equalizer or a low pass filter, you may be able to get the "true" guitarron bass sound, as that's what I had to do. It pretty much gets any kind of instrument. It will pick up steel stringed instruments as well as nylon stringed instruments. Remember, it's a mic! I only bought this for the mic, I did not use any of the software.

Worth it. Fantastic functionality. Easy to use.
12 May 2021

Love this. It has made practicing and just having fun portable and convenient. Exactly what I was looking for to replace having to hook up all the pedals, amps, find free power outlets and set up the space. I can sit on my porch and play along with songs using tonebridge and the included software is nice too. Really a small living environment game changer for someone who just loves to play. worked right out of the box and with your existing corded headphones. (I wish I could use my Bluetooth phones, but I'm sure there is a newer version with this option... The price is right, it's worth it. I was on the fence for a year and kept coming back to buy after being frustrated with all the cords running around for my guitar rig. A lot of fun, wish I'd had it 20yrs ago.
