Cheap, thin, breaks and knots, no good

The quality of this thread is not what it used to be, strong and beautiful. I felt this thread behaved like a cheap thread in those quick sewing kits you get in certain shops. Too
expensive fir what it is I have quilted for more than 20 years and used Gtermann thread. What happened? I did not have this colour so I had to buy it. It knots, it breaks, is thin.
Definetely not for quilting. I wish I did not have to write this review. Please do something about it.

I love crocheting with this thread. No fuzz, strong and beautiful colors!I only have one complaint. The Joann website no longer accepts my postal service address. It says my
town is not recognizef. They go by the "google" pull down and its very annoying. Otherwise I'm happy with Joann

I can not say enough about how much I enjoy using this thread to crochet with. After design is blocked, it has a great stiffness to the thread so design stays as blocked. No fuzz
and nice strength. I use a size .4mm lacis hook with this thread in case anyone would like to try.

Gutermann 100% Cotton Thread
7 October 2016
There I was, 10 years old standing in the little homely quilt shop with my mother and family friend, an avid quilter for many years. She was excitedly going to be teaching the next generation the dying art of quilting. I was 10 years old, picking out the fabrics for my first of what would become many quilts. Finally, after looking for hours, the fabrics were cut and it was time to pick a thread. I stood in front of the large display, looking at the many colors and sizes of threads. So many options to choose from. At that point I chose Gutermann 100% Cotton thread and have been a loyal and faithful customer since day one.I chose Gutermann 100% Cotton upon the influence of my family friend, as she was just as faithful as I have become. So many options to choose from. At that point I chose Gutermann 100% Cotton thread and have been a loyal and faithful customer since day one.I chose Gutermann 100% Cotton upon the influence of my family friend, as she was just as faithful as I have become. The quality of product has spoken for its self time and time again. The color selection never fails. Rarely have I ever run out of thread due to the large quantities readily available, and affordable.QualityI cannot speak highly enough of the quality of Gutermann 100% Cotton. 16 years later and I am still treasuring the quilt I made from that very first attempt. Whether I am loading a spool into my sewing machine to piece a quilt together, or threading it through my needle to hand sew a binding on as my last step, I can trust that every stitch will hold through wear, tear, and time. Gutermann produces a 100% long staple, fine 50 weight 100% cotton thread with a silky finish.Color SelectionWith 393 colors of varying solid shades available you would be hard pressed to not find one that matches your project. Top stitching? Not a problem. How about hemming a dress? They have the color in the shade and tone you need. Several times I have actually had the problem of finding too many shades that match closely to my project and can’t decide which one I’d prefer to use.Quantity SelectionGutermann produces a few quantities of the 100% Cotton thread. This makes it convenient for the type of project you are doing. For smaller projects or top stitching where it is important to match color and shade they offer 110 yards. For large projects such as piecing a quilt, or even several quilts, they typically offer up to 1,000 yards sold in most fabric shops. Commercially Gutermann sells up to 3,281 yard spools available in select locations.CostTypically, Gutermann 100% Cotton tends to be a little above the middle of the road in price. Depending on where you buy, and the quantity you buy determines the price. I find for Gutermann’s competition they run barely higher but for the quality of the product I’m getting I have no problem spending the, at most, extra few dollars for a spool.Machine UseLastly, but absolutely not least, is the effect it has on my machine. If you have spent a lot of money like I have on a quality machine, you want to be aware of the type of thread you’re putting through it. Have you ever opened up your machine to replace the bobbin and there is fuzz and dust everywhere? It is absolutely horrible for the well-oiled mechanics of that pricey machine you have. The last thing you want is to gunk it up and have to spend even more on repairs. Since Gutermann has a 100% long staple, there are less fibers fraying off to create dust. This means a stronger thread that won’t break from the friction of your machine, and won’t gunk it up.... Show more

Like using for crochet
22 April 2024
Love the challenge of super small threads to crochet with. This fits the bill. Lots of colors to choose from. The design is the first 13 rounds of my design named Momentous Occasion. It will be 5.5 inches when finished. This thread is for more than just sewing!! I especially like that there is no fuzz!... Show more

Nice cotton thread.

Good value. Thread is strong and evenly spun on spool. Feeds through my machine without issue. Does shed a lot and I get a good deal of shed buildup around my bobbin and feed-dogs while quilting.... Show more

Not a good choice for high end machines
3 May 2020
Gutterman quality has changed. My Computerized machine kept changing the Tension on me and I was struggling to keep a decent straight stretch for my piecing work. I finally called the sewing machine shop and asked if I could bring it in. What she said surprised me. First thing she asked me was “what kind of thread are you using?“. When I said Gutermann she said stop using it. I told her that when I bought my sewing machine 25 years ago I was told that Gutermann was the thread to use. She replied that 25 years ago it was good thread And was made in Germany. Now it is lower quality made in Mexico and in Greece. I changed to a higher quality thread and my machine works great now... poorest quality thread I've ever had the misfortune to use
29 April 2024
I bought this cotton thread to make bowl cozys which require all cotton supplies to make the cozys because they go in the microwave. This white cotton thread is so thin that it breaks with no real effort after being sewn in and while sewing on the machine. I can't believe this is Gutterman thread. I'm so disappointed!!... The thread arrived dirty. I want to return it but I am supposed to phone JL first as I chose product faulty as my reason for return and now I am waiting online so I will have to choose a different reason for returning it rather than product faulty otherwise I will be wasting too much time waiting for an answer. JL streamline and simplufy your process!... Show more

Very good quality cotton thread.
11 November 2020
I've been making cotton masks and a cotton quilt, and the (very cheap) thread I was using was a bit 'fluffy', and kept getting stuck. Luckily there wasn't much of it, and I thought I'd try replacing it with something better quality. This has, so far, done the job. I can't really write that much more about it because it's thread, but it's so far (in a machine) done the job, not broken, and not got stuck in any of the mechanism. And that's really all I was looking for. So I'd recommend it. Cotton is meant to be better than polyester for using with other cotton materials, but that's a longer-term advantage that I can't comment on yet. So far so good!... Show more
