Definitely my go-to boots!

Once you begin to break into these boots, they get more comfortable and conform to your feet.If I had to list one negative, walking on icy ground is not recommended unless you throw on some spikes or crampons. Ideally, these boots are made for hiking and trekking on rough terrain where you need support and protection when carrying heavy backpack loads (like I do). The grip they have makes them exceptional for this use.If you are serious about hiking and trekking above the treeline or through thick forests, these boots are for you.

Excellent Long Lasting Winter Boots

These boots have stood up to the Hanwag reputation. I just bought a second pair in black size 11. The first pair are brown in a size 10.5. They were somewhat narrow at first, but eventually stretched out. The issue with the size 10.5, is I can only wear a regular merino wool hiking sock. Which works well for me down to -15°C or so. I wanted the extra room to be able to wear thicker socks. My foot is 274mm and you should always add an extra 10mm to 15mm for a proper fit. For these boots I can recommend to go 15mm bigger. With the Alaska GTX trekking boots I have a 10.5 wide and they fit like a glove with the regular merino wool socks. It would be nice if these Winter Alaska boots came in a wide version too. The only negative is that the G-Loft Fit insulation does pack down after awhile losing it's thermal effectiveness. No delamination from salt or wet/dry cycles. The IceGrip sole works well on ice and snow, but can wear faster with constant cement use. All in all, a great long lasting, multi-use, winter hiking boot that will serve you well for many years. Expensive, but worth it if they fit you well. Cheers

I have long narrow feet and skinny ankles, and have had a hard time finding the right fitting boots; until these arrived. They are just the right volume with my insoles and the collar has plenty of space between the right and left to be tightened down. After years of wearing Whites for desert and forest fire fighting, I am tired of sloppy ankle boots packing out. These honestly feel like socks and are surprising lite for a heavy duty boot. Plus the craftsmanship seems to be on par with Lowas which are owned by the brother of Mr. Hanwag. Looking forward to putting some Mike’s on them this weekend. I would recommend ordering a full size down from your regular shoes. I wear a men’s 10 Nike Pegasus and I ordered these in a US men’s 9.

Great boot if you can figure out the sizing
28 September 2023

My husband ordered according to the size chart and didn't realize that an 11.5 US is only a size 45 EU in Hanwag boots. He normally wears 11.5 US (46 EU) in most other trekking boots (Scarpa, Lowa, Aku, La Sportiva...) So he reordered a size 12 US (46 EU) and they still fit a tad tighter than he wanted. Unfortunately, Altitude Sports didn't have a 12.5 US available.Otherwise, the quality looked great and he would've kept the boots had they fit. Definitely want to order according to EU size on these.

Fantastic purchase. I was hesitant given the price point but Altitude had a great Black Friday deal and added discounts for becoming a member. The boots themselves are incredibly built - top quality and meticulous attention to detail. Wonderful stability without compromising comfort. With that, I find that they fit a little narrow. Will need to try the Wide version for comparison.Altitude Sports is great with speedy shipping. Have already ordered other items as a result.Highly recommend the Alaska boots and Altitude Sports.

Hanwag Alaska gtx

Hanwag Alaska gtx Wide ,is the most comfortable hunting boot I have ever worn. The wide foot bed & toe box make for a extremely comfortable fitting boot,. Superfeet green, wide insoles make them that much better. Nice & stiff for for packing heavy loads . I've only got 13 miles in them so far. Hiking with a 20 ish lbs pack in light snow today, great traction, Gortex lined so they are a little on the warm side , gonna try them out in Kodak Alaska early season deer King Salmon. Love the leather padding on the collar. I will submit an review after I've broken the in more.

Hanwag Alaskan Boots

Bought these boots for off the grid backpacking in the Idaho alpine.Very happy with the boots thus far. Very comfortable out of the box and short break in period. I wear euro 45 in most European boots and the euro 45 in these boots fit as expected. I have average feet and these fit slightly narrow with a heavy full cushion sock and perfect with a medium cushioned sock. If I were to order these again I'd go with the wide version for winter treks and snowshoeing. I bought these for summer and fall backpacking so the regular width has worked great. Hope this helps.P.A.

My other Hanwag, Banks got a hole in it when I mildly kicked into a root. So I gave away my useless Alaska GTX for free, scrapped the Banks too, and bought a Scarpa Zodiac Plus instead.

Rugged boots for rough terrain.

I like my new Hanwag Alaska GTX boots. It was 2 wks. before they came? I was told you had 3 pair in my size. UPS and USPS were involved in the shipping. Just curious. The boots came on Sunday morn. and after walking around the house and deciding they were a good fit I went out for a 3 mile shake down hike. I now have about 15 miles on them. They are stiff but will loosen up as the miles add up. They are taller than the Asolo 520 TPS I was wearing and the right boot seems to rub or chafe a little, from the colar, on my leg. Nothing wrong with the mfg. that I can see. Must be the way I walk?

Update to my previous review
3 January 2023

I wrote a review for these boots last year and stated that I didn't think they would make a great all season boot because of their weight. I just wrapped up a 9-day mid-September Wyoming archery elk trip and wore these boots on days 2-9. Temps ranged from 32 overnight up to mid 70's during the hottest days and my feet were never hot. I also didn't find the boots to be heavy. I really love the lacing system on these boots and they let me make the necessary adjustments to make a 120# pack out as comfortable as possible. Conditions on this trip weren't terribly wet, but I sank in to some mud holes up over the laces on multiple occasions and never got a drop of moisture into these boots. I do think these make a very viable option for an all season boot. I don't wear them during training because I often train at near 100f in the summer, but when I am on the mountain these boots have never failed me. I have one more elk trip this year and two tags left so these boots still have work ahead of them, but I have no doubt they will show up and work as hard as I can push them.
