I'm on my second pair of these Alaskan hikers. The leather, well the entire boot besides maybe the sole will shrink a full size after being worn and exposed to any type of moisture... Even rain or snow.So I had to give my first pair away because they were way too tight after that I bought one size bigger. They were great at first but now they are shrinking up and becoming almost too tight as well. The fit is terribly narrow, and I have narrow feet as well.I would suggest anyone who is thinking about buying the 400.00 Alaska boot...to do 2 things. Order at least one full size bigger than your normal footwear....and also get the WIDE version. Now I will have to buy my 3rd pair to simply get the right fit....1200.00 later.

I was hesitant to make this kind of investment, but now that I've taken these boots out on several hikes, I know I made the right choice.I'm planning several multi-day, week, and month treks throughout this year and when you do this, you do not want to sacrifice your feet. Getting the right boot is absolutely critical, especially when you are trekking through varied terrains and environments, from wet rainforests to rocky alpine locations, I've already taken these through steep snowy terrain and they worked flawlessly--especially with snowshoes on.Getting into the nitty-gritty, they offer amazing rigid support for the feet and ankles. Gore-Tex for keeping the feet dry is a major plus when you are in a wet forest. Once you begin to break into these boots, they get more comfortable and conform to your feet.If I had to list one negative, walking on icy ground is not recommended unless you throw on some spikes or crampons. Ideally, these boots are made for hiking and trekking on rough terrain where you need support and protection when carrying heavy backpack loads (like I do). The grip they have makes them exceptional for this use.If you are serious about hiking and trekking above the treeline or through thick forests, these boots are for you.

These boots have stood up to the Hanwag reputation. I just bought a second pair in black size 11. The first pair are brown in a size 10.5. They were somewhat narrow at first, but eventually stretched out. The issue with the size 10.5, is I can only wear a regular merino wool hiking sock. Which works well for me down to -15°C or so. I wanted the extra room to be able to wear thicker socks. My foot is 274mm and you should always add an extra 10mm to 15mm for a proper fit. For these boots I can recommend to go 15mm bigger. With the Alaska GTX trekking boots I have a 10.5 wide and they fit like a glove with the regular merino wool socks. It would be nice if these Winter Alaska boots came in a wide version too. The only negative is that the G-Loft Fit insulation does pack down after awhile losing it's thermal effectiveness. No delamination from salt or wet/dry cycles. The IceGrip sole works well on ice and snow, but can wear faster with constant cement use. All in all, a great long lasting, multi-use, winter hiking boot that will serve you well for many years. Expensive, but worth it if they fit you well. Cheers

I have long narrow feet and skinny ankles, and have had a hard time finding the right fitting boots; until these arrived. They are just the right volume with my insoles and the collar has plenty of space between the right and left to be tightened down. After years of wearing Whites for desert and forest fire fighting, I am tired of sloppy ankle boots packing out. These honestly feel like socks and are surprising lite for a heavy duty boot. Plus the craftsmanship seems to be on par with Lowas which are owned by the brother of Mr. Hanwag. Looking forward to putting some Mike’s on them this weekend. I would recommend ordering a full size down from your regular shoes. I wear a men’s 10 Nike Pegasus and I ordered these in a US men’s 9.
Best boots I have ever purchased. Quality throughout. They fit true to size and are a robust, tough trekking boot. The lacing system is second to none, with 2 independent zones locking in your foot for greater comfort and stability on gnarly trails. I would recommend this boot for all backcountry adventures requiring a tough, waterproof boot.
Bought these boots for off the grid backpacking in the Idaho alpine.Very happy with the boots thus far. Very comfortable out of the box and short break in period. I wear euro 45 in most European boots and the euro 45 in these boots fit as expected. I have average feet and these fit slightly narrow with a heavy full cushion sock and perfect with a medium cushioned sock. If I were to order these again I'd go with the wide version for winter treks and snowshoeing. I bought these for summer and fall backpacking so the regular width has worked great. Hope this helps.P.A.
My daughter, a geologist, bought these boots last year as she was unhappy with boots that failed after only one season in the field. She was so happy with them that I bought a pair. I took short 3, then 5 mile hikes to break them in, though they didn't really feel like they needed breaking in. They are very comfortable to walk in while providing excellent support. The all around rand protects the leather from abrasions when working or climbing around rock. The sole is quite stiff, which is exactly what I wanted. Some people have complained they are poor hunting boots. Well, they probably would be, but I have boots specifically for hunting that are much more flexible for stalking and have lots of insulation for sitting still. The Hanwag Alaska is NOT a hunting boot! ... MoreMy daughter, a geologist, bought these boots last year as she was unhappy with boots that failed after only one season in the field. Well, they probably would be, but I have boots specifically for hunting that are much more flexible for stalking and have lots of insulation for sitting still. The Hanwag Alaska is NOT a hunting boot! It is a trail boot. My hunting boots wouldn't last a season in the conditions my daughter works in. So far these boots are wearing well, are comfortable and give excellent support. They will even support type 2 crampons if needed. Only time will tell if they last as long as they are comfortable
I stumbled upon these on the net .sure glad I did and had the courage to purchase them .comfy , comfy , comfy ! Valhalla Pure had lots of them in two colours and many sizes . I always get great service in their stores . I have Zamberlan Tofane boots as well, Those are for Hunting since their very stiff. These Hang are also a class four for stiffness but some how they are also great for everyday use since they are very comfortable. Warm in cold weather as well.Well made boots ! you won't regret purchasing these lovely boots.

My other Hanwag, Banks got a hole in it when I mildly kicked into a root. So I gave away my useless Alaska GTX for free, scrapped the Banks too, and bought a Scarpa Zodiac Plus instead.
While not built for wildland firefighting I bought these a second time for the extreme comfort and support they offer. Surprisingly the Vibram sole will carry me through a season of extreme exposure to heat, leather is tough and have still retained waterproofness on my first pair. Out of the box these fit like a glove and are a true 11.5 (10.5 UK). Though beware if your feet run wide, these might want to be tried on before purchased online. My only minor gripe is with the uppermost boot hooks, which are prone to bending slightly outwards with extensive use.
