A good choice for a solo coffee drinker

This is a very tidy and easy to use compact coffee grinder. I went for a hand one as aside from saving energy I like the ritual of measuring out the beans and grinding them all steadily down. Ceramic is definitely better than metal as lasts longer and won't rust. It has pretty clear instructions and grinds well. Being able to take fully apart for cleaning is also a really helpful feature, as are the markers for 1 cup or two. If you're making for more than 2 people you'll need a bigger one though as this is a compact model. The design won't set the world on fire but is neat and modern. The four stars is for some minor points: the top section of the grinder is difficult to put down when unscrewed - on its side it rolls away, and it won't stand up on either end because of screws sticking out. I found the grind adjustment took a moment to understand as it's a little tricky to figure out where the limits of the travel are. It can take a bit of work to clean and dry the quite narrow chamber where the grinds fall.

An awesome and cheap entry level grinder for espresso after a minor modification...

If you want to finesse your grinding for having a perfect espresso extraction you will have to modify it by using an additional locking nut instead of the original adjustment mechanism. This is because the original mechanism does not allow you to adjust the grinding in steps small enough to have the perfect grind. when replacing it with a fitting locking nut you will be able to make the finest adjustment to your grinding level. You will also need to get a few fitting washers to make sure that handle is locked in place properly.

Great Small Grinder

I bought this grinder to do double duty as an everyday hand grinder and as a travel grinder. My daily coffee bean needs are about 3 cups, so this is a nice little grinder to get the job done, and fits into my morning french press ritual. The top hopper and burr grinder is easy to take apart and put back together for full cleaning when needed. It is small and light, and great for travel and car camping. I wish the clear bottom was made of glass, but the plastic has held up well for over a year so far with no visible cracking, but I only hand wash the clear part.

Grinding like a boss
17 June 2017

Hi I saw this model in reviews everywhere and all reports were good. Japanese design and Chinese made to a very high quality and with quality materials. Handles fine or coarse grinds with ease and produces a consistent grind with ceramic parts (no metal blades). It's only flaw is a benefit - not electric = quiet and free to run (apart from the exercise of a few minutes grinding). I use it with the Aeropress (for one or two serves a day mostly) which is perfect as the grinds catcher fits inside the plunger tube so it's easy to tap in the grinds without any mess. So glad I didn't buy an expensive hard to clean noisy electric grinding machine :)

It has become almost impossible to open the top to add beans
7 October 2018

The have to take off the handle to open the top to add beans. The shaft that the handle fits into is made of a soft mental and is getting stripped. Not sure if stripped in the right word. The shaft is getting ever increasing dents where the handle fits into it. So you have to wiggle the handle around to loosen the handle. But this gets harder and harder as the dents in the shaft get deeper. I think I will be able to get the top off a couple of more times before it becomes impossible. This makes me sad because the grind it produces it quite nice.

Money well spent and you have no reason to not have fresh ground coffee anymore.
24 April 2019

Good morning.....I purchased this burr grinder a couple weeks ago and ran out of beans about 10 days ago. We had a can of Maxwell house that the wife bought rather than wait for me to get some beans. She is not a coffee aficionado I am. I love the entire ritual that starts with the grinding of the beans, the aroma and the the anticipation of that first cup....kinda like a fiend needing a fix. Anyhoo....my temporary sideline from my morning ritual has made me really appreciate this Hario Slim grinder. It grinds your beans quickly, it has several settings for your desired grind and is small enough that you can pack it with you so you never have to settle for Wolfgang Puck coffee again (I stayed for a night and had some of that) Horrid. It has an acrylic bin to hold your freshly ground beans and the static does make some "dust" cling to the acrylic but the burrs are ceramic and I think it is money well spent. If you'll excuse me I have a cup o' Joe that needs to be savoured. Cheers!

My first manual grinder
2 May 2023

I was curious because I wanted to try coffee beans and not powder anymore. Coffee beans are cheaper than powder. I also go camping very often, so needed a manual grinder. It looks OK with the price I've paid. I would like more grounded, tiny and powder-ish. Anyhow, I'm happy with what I got.

My new best friend
17 August 2020

I really love this grinder. It's my new best friend. Able to adjust the level of grind according to method of brewing; the quality is top notch; and the service of the team at Alternative Brewing was great. Personally I will not go to an automatic grinder anymore. There is great satisfaction in manual grinding, and allows for deeper engagement in your coffee brewing experience.

Not an easy device to use
9 April 2018

Unfortunately I have had problems utilising this device. The settings are not logical but experimental and the result means that so far the coffee grinds I have produced have been too course or too fine to match the consistency I need for my espresso machine. So far I have wasted 1/3 packet of expensive beans trying to get the right consistency and am still not there. Also it takes me nearly 40 minutes to grind enough coffee for 2 cups of coffee and it is not the most ergonomically friendly shaped device to hold and grind for such a period of time. Wish I had known this before I purchased, as I would have definitely made a different choice.

This is a very decent
10 January 2017

This is a very decent grinder!Only issues:The grind is mildy uneven compared to several commercial electronic grinders, however, it is quite consistent for a hand burr grinder. Also,The grinding is a very manual process, more so than I originally expected. However, is not an significant issue. All round consistent grinder producing more than satisfactory grinds!
