Those reviews oversold the extent to which this hammock gives you a flat(ish) position BUT also glosses over some other vital limitations and deficiencies. To explain, the Eureka uses a couple of spreader bars to keep the hammock open, and the hourglass shape helps keep it flatter and the sides from hugging you. This makes it less packable, a little heavier but so much more useable. It too has some issues but they are easily resolved. You MUST open it fully before you get into the hammock to prevent damaging it. Sounds OK but while you are doing that the bugs swarming around you have a huge opening to join you,, and they will, plus you are then going to have to reach the zip pullers at each end (its about 8ft+end to end) to close them! So this is no good if you camp where there are stinging insects. Even once it is closed the net is joined to the sides of the base so wyou will be up against it at times and within reach of those insects. If you are in windy and raining conditions the supplied tarp is really not big enough to full cover the hammock, it has to be positioned strategically, and if the wind changes in the night.... you have to get out, join the bugs, and reposition it. In short this Henessey is, in my experience, only good for you if you like to sleep in a bowed position, in good weather, with no insects around. Some do, apparently, love the Hennesy Hammock System but is it just because they've not experienced anything better? One sleepless night's experience drove me back into a ground tent for the first time after 25 years of hammock camping, and to return the Hennessy (full marks to MEC for their return policy), and I'm ordering another Chrysalis before my next wilderness trip..

I have had this hammock for several years. I also own some ENO hammocks. Both are high quality and durable. But when it comes to backpacking my Hennessy is my first choice. The combination of a bug fly, low weight (not UL), and rain fly just make sense. As I have gotten more experience I have made slight adjustments to make it a better hammock for me. This includes some reflective cord, upgraded stakes, climbing rings and some cold weather insulation. My only critique is that is it a little heavier than I would like but that is in part to the durable construction. Overall, a great investment and highly recommended. It makes a good night sleep in the bush possible.

It’s easily avoidable, but important to know.Sleep diagonal and not with the curve of the hammock. These and other asymmetrical hammocks are meant to be sleep in diagonally so that you actually sleep flat and not curved like a banana. This will keep tension off your knees and neck giving you a much more comfortable sleep.Other than that when set up properly you stay warm and dry in this excellent sleep system.

If you're buying this hammock, it's unlikely that you aren't aware of its typical use and reputation. If you're in the market for one of these right now, you might also know that they're terribly difficult to acquire at the moment, even directly from Hennessey. There's a reason these are used for expeditions in some of the most remote places in the world. I've used them in the jungle in the Yucatan and in Oaxaca, in deep in caves on survey and mapping trips, and they're just excellent in every regard. They're rugged, comfortable, durable, light... an ideal shelter that keeps you dry and off the ground in places where the things on the ground are numerous, bitey, and venomous. The jungle floor tends to sparkle at night like diamonds when you sweep a light across it, reflections off the eyes of more spiders than you'd care to count. This equipment is kind of the de facto standard for this application, they are in no way kidding about what their product is designed to do, and it's well regarded in terms of being able to do it.That's all much less the point of this review than to give one of the most glowing recommendations I've ever written in terms of the customer service of this company, Eartheasy. I just cannot recommend them highly enough.I've had my hammock for years; but my wife Cassandra has recently started expedition caving with me and now needs one as well. As ubiquitous as these hammocks are in the circles I tend to run in, it would have never crossed my mind that there was any kind of shortage. I've had no reason to look for another one, they tend to last. We've got an expedition coming up on Labor Day, and I figured I'd just order one on Monday, week-of, and have it delivered easily in time.Needless to say, that did not go well. Vendor after vendor after vendor had no stock. None of the major online retailers had this item. REI? Nope. Moosejaw? Nope. On to Amazon (yeah, ew, I know), and Backcountry (also ew, I know), nope. Hennessey directly. Nothing.Except for one vendor ...Eartheasy. As it happens, they don't just have an item on a website that represents something you can order from them but will ship from the manufacturer, they have actual stock of this product. As far as I can tell, they're the only business that carries these right now. They also didn't have a default shipping option that was quick enough to get the item to me in time. Here's where one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had comes in, Melissa at Eartheasy. In the age of Amazon, I struggle to remember a time when you could quickly and directly contact a live person who could (or would?) have any real effect on the outcome of an order. Melissa was able to verify the stock, quote shipping options that aren't standard not once but twice, and get the product shipped out that day. These are people who care about their business and their customers, and that's a rare thing in this day and age. What I did not even consider till well after the fact... it struck me some time later... "Wait a minute... who IS 'Eartheasy'? I've never even heard of this company?! They're selling a product that's the type of thing I tend to need; but they're not on my radar as a vendor for this kind of gear?"Turns they're not on my radar because that's not really at the core of what they even do. The vast majority of their products, while delightful in their own right, aren't really anything to do with outdoor/expedition gear. My point in saying so is that they went above and beyond to help and ensure timely delivery of something I very much needed and could not get anywhere else, and with an item seemingly at the peripheral edge of what they do.In summary, these folks are just next-level with customer service, and I can't recommend this company highly enough.

Still Loving HH!

This is the thrid Hennessy purchased, althought this one is for a friend. My original Expedition from 2009 is still in use so durability is excellent. The older one had the velco bottom entry. The zipper entry is better in general because you can access the inside easily. Struts and comfortable
9 October 2022

Sturdy. Stayed bug free, cool, and comfortable on a Florida night. It’s my first camp hammock. I liked being off the ground and level. The asymmetric feature is comfortable. I’m under 6 feet and 170lbs. It was just right. The material seems sturdy. I am rough on my gear. I am working on getting to pack smaller. But so far it is worth the real estate in my pack. It does need stakes. 2 for the fly and two for the hammock.Would recommend.

Tarp too small for tropical winds and rain.

TL;DR: Great package, everything you need. Suspension system basic, but usable with knots. Tarp too small for strong tropical winds with rain.I purchased this hammock to use in the Florida Keys. First off, the package does indeed include everything you need to start hammocking. I did look up a video or two to learn how to tie up the ropes though, as this does not come with the easier hook and loop or carabiner type suspension systems. It's just a rope that ties to a tree strap with loops on each end.For the first night it was great. The bug net kept the bugs out and it was definitely comfortable. I would recommend a sleeping pad or underquilt if it's windy and a mild temperature.Unfortunately, where it fell short, was the tarp. While the tarp system is very slick; easily attaching and tensioning against the ridge line, it's just too darn small for heavy tropical winds and rain. When rain starts slanting in 30 mph+ winds water starts to make its way in. It wasn't flooding in, but over the course of an hour or so the whole side of the hammock was wetted. This was after tensioning the guy lines as much as I humanely could and affixing them to large landscaping blocks.I'll likely buy a hammock again in the future, but ensuring I have a larger tarp to pair with it.

The best

Have a number of hammocks, for backpacking this is my choice. If you watch videos online you will eventually figure out the hanging method. The biggest knock against H.H.s is the hanging method and insulation issues. IMHO once you figure out the Hennessy method of hanging you might prefer it. Insulation is another matter. These hammocks work better above 60F. If you go below 60F you will need to buy insulation. In a way, this is not a knock on Hennessy as all hammocks need insulation below 60F, but if you backpack above 7000 feet like i do, then this package alone is not going to work for you, you will need to spend more $$.

(Seriously. There’s a pit at one end of Camp II!) Enter the MEC Hennessey Hammock Expedition. It’s completely enclosed, so there’s no way I could fall out, and it has a rain cover that kept me dry under the constant drips from above. Our team used two variations of the Hennessey Hammock: the classic model and the zipper model. The classic model uses a Velcro closure for entry and exit on the bottom of the hammock, which means you have to move your sleeping pad and bag to the side to get in and out. I was suspicious of the Velcro closure right underneath my sleeping pad, concerned that it would come undone while I was sleeping (and cause an unwanted exit!). But the hammock is well-designed, and tension kept the Velcro closed until I forced it open. For slightly more money, the zipper model does away with the Velcro. The advantage is that the zipper is located at the side seam between the bottom fabric and a mosquito mesh.Setting up the Hennessey looks like it would be a chore, but the cords and attachments for the rain fly were actually quite easy to use. Plus, there’s a mesh gear pocket suspended from the ceiling line for stashing small items. Getting good tension is important to minimize sagging (as it is with any hammock). Overall the Hennessey Hammock Expedition is a great option for sleeping anywhere where gear weight is an issue, and there are trees (or cave walls) to suspend it.

Man I feel cool whipping this out when everyone else is setting up their tents. I've been using the Scout Classic since 2016, which is the smaller version of this (I'm 5' 7", 130 lb. and frugal). In the beginning, I was intimidated by the default rope and tree strap setup and opted for third-party hammock straps and carabiners, which has made setup a breeze. But recently I've wanted to revert to the originally intended minimalist setup and ditch the unnecessary hardware. I pack two tent stakes for tying down the rain fly close to the hammock body in bad weather. I haven't had the rain fly fail me as others have commented, but haven't used it in torrential monsoons either. I also pack a blue tarp that I place underneath the hammock for my pack and shoes, and just wrap them up in the case of rain.I sleep cold so unfortunately hammock season is over by late fall. Even in summer I absolutely need a sleeping pad, I use a Thermorest Scout inflatable pad that's just the right size for insulating my shoulders and butt. There's nothing more relaxing and cozier than gently swinging in this hammock after a long day's hike, dry and warm and shielded from mosquitoes. Though to another reviewer's point of feeling exposed, I've never felt more nervous than solo camping in this and hearing a buck rustling around and feeling like I was about to become a low-hanging pinata.
