Being enterprise drives they do have a much longer MTBF. They came with 64467 hours of usage (7.3yrs) so I'll be keeping the 1yr warranty card handy. With this much usage I would not run these standalone and use some level of RAID for protection of your data (I run mirrors). Remember there is a reason these are cheap.

Basically I buy only enterprise drives for data archival purpose. Hitachi was chosen due to their good track record. People need to understand the difference between an enterprise drive vs a normal consumer drive. The components use are of higher quality & therefore can withstand many years of use with low failure rate. Other brands like Seagate Constellation series & Western Digital RE series were considered too but Hitachi is a little cheaper. The premium price over consumer drives is definitely worth it.

Great price for a new 3TB SAS hard drives (new not refurbished) . HGST drives are renown for their reliability before Western Digital bought them out and added them to their inventory. They're driving a 6 drive 18TB RAID 5 array in my Mac Pro 5,1 using an Areca 1880xi -12 RAID card. I'm getting 1,330 Mbps Write and 800Mbps Read speeds. Drives are smooth and nice and quiet and all located inside the Mac Pro tower.

Great budget friendly Hitachi hard-drive. This is an enterprise rated drive for only a couple of more dollars than its sister model. These seem to be alot quieter as well. Highly recommended for use in home NAS systems. The 1 year warranty is great for a peace of mind.
The 3 TB HGST drive is quiet for a spinning drive and also fast compared to other spinners. Although I agree that it is reliable I have just started using it for storage and have copied almost 2 TB of data to it flawlessly. For a used drive it is working very well but I can't speak to the longevity of it.
This is the perfect solution for me. I wanted to get a mechanical drive to store all my games on steam and other data. Really didn't want to spend a whole lot for but wanted something with a large capacity. Found this deal for $49 for a brand new 2TB and couldn't pass it up. It's a good quick drive, but it's rather loud when under stress and it's also from 2012, yes mine was 5 years old, never used though, 0hrs power on time. However that doesn't really bother me as long as it works and it does flawlessly.
I spent several weeks researching all the different brands and lines of hard drives. After talking with a buddy in the tech business who pays more in quarterly taxes than I make in a year I decided on the HGST Ultrastar. Hitachi took them over but they still make the HGST independently rather than just slapping a new name on what they crank out of their mnanufacturing facility. THe Ultrastar is their enterprise line and my buddy told me that for a stick it in and forget it it was my best bet and I'd get exactly what I'd paid for. Nearly a year later now and he was right, I formatted it, started saving stuff to it and haven't had to think about it since. I could not be happier with it.
First of all, this drive came 4 days earlier than expected. Installed it effortlessly into my PC case and booted up to Windows. When I opened Disk Management it prompted me to format the newly found disk drive. I formatted it and started moving files over. Super fast transfer speeds and this puppy is ultra quiet. I'm moving over about 366 GB of Pictures from my old drive and you cannot hear anything.
Since I bought this 4-year-old hard drive because it has a great reliability according to Backblaze, I will not know for several years if it has longevity as well as shorter term reliability. For now, it runs smoothly, but with a very slight ticking sound when it powers up. Would it have been better to buy a different brand of hard drive that is new? Only time will tell.
Haven't had them a long time but so far so good. Using in a RAID array for bulk storage with failure tolerance. Complements SSDs; use where random-access latency is less important.
