Not going to get into a review of the books; they are as good as they have always been. I will note that this version of The Hobbit is from the 2001 HarperCollins edition that is a corrected version of their 1995 printing; this means it is the most up to date and complete version of The Hobbit. Now onto the review proper: This printing is absolutely beautiful. The leather is soft and supple. The front covers are imprinted with the book title, Tolkien's logo, and his name. The pages are much like the pages of a bible, maybe a bit thicker. Most importantly the binding is pretty solid and should last through many readings without any issues at all.If you love The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and wanted an edition that you could enjoy the rest of your life and ... MoreNot going to get into a review of the books; they are as good as they have always been. My god this looks good. I'm not going to comment on the story, as that's been done time and time again, so I'll just quickly describe the set.Inside the plastic wrap you will find four leatherette-bound books inside a leatherette box with gold-pressed lettering. The books have the title pressed onto the covers, as well as Tolkien's name and symbol. The books have rounded corners that dip in the middle, and the paper is thin, perhaps a bit thicker than a standard bible page. The books contain all the maps used in the 50th Anniversary Edition, however not the pages from the book of Marzabul. The Hobbit contains the two maps printed in colour and some illustrations by Tolkien in B/W, as do the others - though illustrations are scarce in tLotR. The binding seems to be onto cloth, not just glued down cheaply, so I expect these to last for a long time. The spine seems worthy of a hardback, though the cover is pliable.I am salivating right now (not quite...) and I highly recommend buying this. Even if you know nothing about the book or the author (you should), even if you already have a copy or two (can never have too many). A great set of great books.EDIT: Negatives - apparently I should find some. The box is not lined with leatherette, and it looks somewhat ugly without the books inside. Somewhere I heard this edition would have gilded edges and, well, it doesn't (whatever).

I've already finished the Hobbit and am starting of the Fellowship. It's a beautiful little set of soft covers, with faux leather covers. I'm keeping them in their box when I'm not reading them. It displays in such a way that you could see it in a cozy Hobbit hole very easliy.

I personally love these little books, but they're not that high quality and I wouldn't expect a ton from them. Before I get into the actual book review, I would recommend ordering these from somewhere else besides Target. The shipping box/material was not safe at all, and even though the books were shrink-wrapped, the box and some books came scratched and fellowship of the ring was already coming apart from the spine binding. Target was helpful and gave me a refund, but I'm still not sure if you want to take the risk. That being said, these are tiny palm-sized books that feel like personal journals. I really love how they look on the shelf and even more than that, I love the intimacy they offer when reading them. I really love how they look on the shelf and even more than that, I love the intimacy they offer when reading them. It really feels like I'm reading Bilbo or Frodo's personal journals which is the main appeal to me. The text is very small, but I don't have a problem with it. It takes a minute to get used to (especially Fellowship which is the smallest) but after that I barely notice. If you are looking for high quality leather, you won't find it here. This is cheap faux leather that is more plastic than anything else. It still looks awesome, but it won't age well and doesn't seem particularly sturdy. However, it looks great and feels nice in the hand. I still much prefer this to paperback, but we'll see how I feel in a year or two. My biggest gripe would be the thinness of the pages and the printing quality. I understand that the pages need to be thin in order to fit all the text in such a small format, but the ink really bleeds through. You can see the text on the back of the page as well as the next page after that, but putting your fingers between the pages does help a bit. If there is an illustration, it bleeds through a massive amount. In terms of the printing, some pages are nice and dark while others are very light. Overall, I think you should pick these up if you love Tolkien, the appearance is appealing to you, and you think you can read very small text. They are inexpensive, look great on a shelf, and are fun to read!
These books are awesome - the leather look is beautiful and I was looking forward to reading them again. They are half size books - this should be made more obvious because I was NOT expecting them to be half sized novels - and I would have expected them to be full sized considering the price. I was disappointed in the size.
The books alone are very nice. Though the leather is not real, it's very soft to the touch. However, these books very bendable and are rather small. They're not quite pocket sized, but no where near the length of a regular sized hardcover. You could fit one in a small handbag easily. The text is also quite small, so if you have trouble reading small writing I wouldn't recommend this for you. All that said this is a great set for the price, as I know most other versions can be pricey. If you're looking for something bigger and more durable, but not to pricey, I'd get the regular paper back versions with the movie adaptation on the covers. (prices vary depending on website). These books came in perfect condition. This was a gift for my boyfriend and he was so super excited! I will say, personally I thought I was weird how small they came. Almost like small bibles lol. But he was perfectly fine with it and was actually happy they were small and portable. I bought them just in time for our flight for vacation so he was please to have them to read on the plane without taking up too much space in his backpack.
If you're looking for a classical touch of owning these great stories by Tolkien, I would highly recommend it. The leather covers, various maps and illustrations throught the books and stamped leather collection box are all of the highest quality. The fact also that this version is the most accurate to what Tolkien originally wrote and all the necessary corrections from previous printings have been made, makes this set even better. Truly happy with this purchase!
I admit it. I fell for the price and the look. The pictures are so deceiving. They look gorgeous, it true, if youre a hobbit (see what I did just there?) I missed the whole POCKET version as I looked all this over. They mean a girl could fit it in her jeans pocket kids. The pages are very thin like a Bible on steroids. I just wish they would do this in a collectible size. It looks ridiculous on my bookshelf next to all the REAL books. But, for some reason, the real books cost upwards of $100 each most of the time. I would love to see them make these in a real size for $100. I would buy them in a heartbeat! Just dont make the mistake I did. These are very very little. If thats what you want, these are grrrrreat!
This set of books was exactly as I had imagined it to be. The soft leatherette cover of each book lends itself to being read. I was pleased that the books were not hardbacks, which, for small volumes, would have made it difficult to keep them open to the desired place for reading. And, I had feared the pages would be so delicate that they would easily tear. This is not the case. The paper is good quality, opaque, and perhaps somewhat thinner than in a larger volume, but substantial nevertheless. The print is small, but not unreadable. The set is stylish and the colors blend into the library setting into which they have been placed. I am 110% satisfied with the set of books.
