I bought this to get myself trained for flying a larger model. You have to train your brain which stick will move the plane left or right and up or down. This one has airlerons which is a plus and is another feature more sophisticated planes will have. There also is of course the throttle. And there are even trims for the control surfaces. And there is a built in gyro (or some form of electronic stabilizer) that adjusts the control surfaces to maintain level flight. So you have everything in one plane that almost anyone should be able to fly. I did and it was a real confidence booster.

Amazing technology makes flying safer and easier.

This model uses technology that enables it to perform as well as airplanes two or three times its size. The performance in gusty winds that would normally ground many other planes has to be seen to be believed. I did not believe it until I saw a friend fly his, then I bought one. The SAFE feature can be turned off in flight to provide a more seat-of-the-pants flying experience. You can tell right away when it's inactive. There is nothing to complain about on this model, and I'd recommend it to a beginner or an experienced pilot. It is a first-rate product. An experienced pilot could fly this almost anywhere, any season. Perfect for travel, too. For a beginner, I'd recommend basic help from an RC 'instructor' pilot, as this plane will fly on it's own. A beginner pilot would not know they are about to experience a problem right away, so someone with some flying time should be close by, especially to make sure it does not fly too far or encounter obstacles. For landing, the plane has to be forced to land...again, not instinctive for a beginner. An 'instructor' can input suggestions and bring about a happy landing. You then change batteries and are off again. The optional floats for water work well also and do not adversely affect the performance. You will want to purchase extra flight batteries. I was getting over 5 minutes flight time of conservative flights with winds averaging 5 mph with consistent gusts up to 10 mph. This plane handled it like it was a calm day.

Easy and fun to fly but the battery connection is very poor as well as the velcro.

I like the plane and it is easy and fun to fly with in a light wind but the battery hookup is very poor and easily put in wrong. There doesn't seem to be any diode protection if it is hooked up backwards. Sometimes it will just get the battery hot and bend the 2 very small connector pins which happened to me. The last time I got it hooked up wrong the battery connectors were ruined and the plane connector was fried. I soldered a new plane connector in but it had ruined one of the servos which would only work in one direction. The servos are part of the esc so it is very expensive to replace the whole board. If the connectors were a different to make it impossible to hook up backwards it would solve this problem. Easy to fly - lots of fun.
24 October 2015

This plane is a great set-up for the beginning pilot. It is easy to fly. My best advice is to stay in wide-open spaces so you don't park it in a tree. It weighs almost nothing so if it gets hung up in a tree it is very hard to get down. Trust me. Keep a soccer ball handy - that his how I retrieved mine. But, wow what a fun thing to fly. The panic button will instantly stabilize the plane and it is fun to do stunts in advance mode and then switch it right back to beginner so you don't pile it into the ground. My unit has sustained several crashes - sometimes with no damage, sometimes with damage requiring epoxy to get it back in the air. If you hit hard on the nose, it sometimes dislodges the motor (easy to epoxy). A nose-in can also dislodge the propeller shaft gear ... MoreThis plane is a great set-up for the beginning pilot. My unit has sustained several crashes - sometimes with no damage, sometimes with damage requiring epoxy to get it back in the air. If you hit hard on the nose, it sometimes dislodges the motor (easy to epoxy). A nose-in can also dislodge the propeller shaft gear (the bigger one) from the motor gear. A simple push with a ball-point pen will slide the propeller shaft gear back into place. I also bought floats for my unit which I do not recommend. The plane cannot handle ANY water splashing on it. Mine got a tiny bit of water inside the cabin (where the electronics are) and I thought I had ruined it. After a day of drying, it coughed back to life but I think I was lucky. I have since coated the electronics with dielectric grease to keep out moisture but I have not ventured back out on the water. I left the floats on however and actually hand launch it and land it in the grass with the floats. I would recommend this plane to anyone. It is a blast to fly and makes even a mediocre pilot like me feel like a pro.

Excellent plane
12 August 2024

When I pulled it from the box I thought it was a non durable piece of foam. But with how light it is it makes breaking it is almost hard, and Im a beginner. This plane is currently teaching me how to fly. Battery charges in less than an hour, love the auto-correct button if I get out of shape. Excellent plane. I wish I would have went with this before I bought and crashed my FMS PA 18 because I had the wrong mode on. This plane will build you to fly the bigger more advanced planes. This plane is super easy to fly. Reccomend!

Hobbyzone Sport Cub S is easy for a beginner, fun for advanced
29 March 2017

I would echo what others here have said. I just love this plane, it is the best plane out there for learning and going into advanced. You don't need a giant area once you get more experience either. My 10 year old could fly this in safe mode with no problem when she had never flown a plane before. Even though for its size it is pretty stable, wind is the only issue with this plane. When learning stay away from wind over 7 MPH. Definitely take off and land into the wind, makes it a lot easier. There are some great videos out there on YouTube flying this plane too. Parts are easy to get and reasonably priced.

Micro size....MEGA- fun!

This Kit/combo is incredible...... small but not too small ( 24" + wing ) and with features usually only found on much larger planes, it flies like a much bigger model. I hadn't flown RC in quite some time but this models features allowed me to start in an "easy" mode and get comfortable flying and then switch to a very snappy and aggressive mode as I gained my confidence back. This plane literally flies great right out of the box..... with a quick charge and some minor and easy trim adjustments in flight, I was quickly feeling comfortable in the air with it. I would recommend this model to ANYONE thinking about learning to fly RC or just get back into it . I was skeptical about this models size and weight but I have to admit it is GIANT ball of fun...forgiving and durable and so far trouble free. I've flown it quite a few times ...in open fields ( on a calm day...a must, as it is very light!) and in a fairly tight tree lined yard....no problems either way because it has plenty of power ( and ailerons!) and can be flown just as easily slow or fast . Best of all...the combo gives you 3 batteries- and trust me, you'll love being able to use them all each time you fly this awesome plane.

Returning to RC after 35 years
17 October 2019

I find it unbelievable what kind of technology you can buy for very little money. The plane is smarter than the pilot. I find I must become familiar again with the controls. It's easy to become confused if you find yourself guessing what does what. Know all the controls and what they do. No guessing. I suggest first flight in completely calm conditions or inside a field house or large gym. Calm is the key word if you want to learn to fly RC. Hey!

Something wrong..
28 September 2018

I've purchased this plane before from horizon hobby and was thoroughly impressed with it. Only reason why I bought another is because I crashed it, and broke it. Didn't want to spend the 130 on another so I found this one one Ebay that only needed a motor. Got the plane put the new motor in it, and it never flew right. Could not trim the airplane at all crashed it due to that. Pretty sure it needed a whole new motherboard and motor. Moral of the story. Not happy.

This is the plane for learning RC flying.

I dearly wish I had this plane when I was learning to fly RC. Back in the day it took three airplanes to learn. Some pilots even more. With the 'SAFE' self leveling technology in this plane it takes the worry out of learning to fly. The plane will virtually land it self if you shut down the throttle. Just don't fly it outdoors in the wind and it will treat you right. It flies very slowly and if the throttle is kept at about 1/2 it is very predictable. The plane really does not like to be flown at full throttle. Good for indoor flying in a large gym with some practice. The best part is that your are learning on a full 4 channel airplane which is a good thing. With the three settings for the gyros it will grow with you as your skills become better. Parts are available from them on their web site but you should only need batteries. This plane can be bound to any Spektrum transmitter that is DSMX or DSM2. the plane will fly much better on a Spektrum DX6I or higher transmitter. I happen to have mine on a DX9 and it MUCH better than the factory RTF one.
