I absolutely love these boots! I was looking for something to replace my Arcteryx Aerios FL Gtx and these are even better. Way more plush, perfect for my bad knees. They are so comfortable right away, no breaking in needed. Some reviews complain about the thin tongue, I actually really like it, it doesn’t dig in and cause pain like some other thicker, stiffer boots do, although I think it could have been just a tad longer. As for size I tried my usually women’s 9.5 (too small), then 10 (way too big) so ordered 8 and 8.5 in men’s and the 8.5 falls right between the 9.5 and 10 in women, so perfect and I preferred the all black color anyways. These are the absolute best hiking shoes I’ve ever used. For fast approach shoes, these can’t be beat. i got these to replace a low top trail running Goretex Hoka whose tread was worn out, and these are better. The high top keeps rocks and debris out while exploring off trail. I do a lot of creek crossings for waterfall photography and these are just perfect. I can stand in 3-4” of water and not get wet. I've owned two pair so far and hands down, the best shoes for rugged terrain to an afternoon stroll with the dog. I really hope Hoka never discontinues this line! They're light but supportive; vibrum sole keeps them lasting for the long haul. The only issue I've had is over time, the material wears most where the foot flexes on the anterior side of the shoe and eventually breaks through. Still worth it, though. At first, I wasn't so sure about the Gortex lining. I'm here to say I wouldn't have them any other way - breathable as if it wasn't Gortex, but offers the H20 protection that's come in handy many times.

I bought this speedgoat expecting a similar feel of the previous model. This version has a familiar thud feeling like any other shoe. Also the arch seems less supported or absent altogether, perhaps was modified by a more flat footprint. Why do companies have a good thing going and drastically change it? Btw, no one needs a swallow tail heel tab thing. Stop putting useless aesthetics first and get back to what you do best. What we want: cushioned bouncy energy return, a normal arch, pull tab, normal tongue, long enough laces that fit whatever size you order, incremental changes.
I am finding these boots very comfortable and so I'm pleased with that aspect. However I find them really difficult to get in and out of because the boots have holes for the laces going all the way to the top. The opening for the laces is so small and and oval shape instead of round like the plastic end of the laces I don't want to pull them out. I did try it and struggled to get the laces back in. I really wish that Hoka had put the hooks on the top two rows like hiking boots have to make it easier. It wouldn't impact them when used as a trail running shoe.I am doing an 80 km trek through Jordan this November and am a bit concerned about taking them off during the breaks throughout the day them trying to get them back on once my feet have swelled up a bit.
I really wanted these to work. They look great but are very narrow. They are supposed to be a D width but aren't. The top fabric has no stretch to it so they won't adjust to a slightly wider foot. I wear an 11 in the Kaha 2 GTX and every other Hoka I have owned so I ordered the 11 Speedgoat Mid. They are just too narrow. Adding to that the goretex lining is an additional bootie that further restricts your foot entry. They then neglected to add a heal strap on the back of the shoe making it very hard to get your foot in an already tight fit. I really wanted these to work for lighter summer hikes. Returning. They ask if you would recommend this to a friend. If you wear a narrow shoe size yes, if you need a little more room no.
REI did a fantastic timely job of shipping these shoes. The literally arrived to my home less than 36 hours after ordering them here in Alaska. The Fairbanks store did not have them so they must have come from the Anchorage area. Great job REI. Hoka, I had such high hopes. Generally your shoes are super comfortable and fit really well. These shoes are the exception to fit. I have never purchased wide shoes in my life, well you definitely need these in a wide. The toe box is very tight and narrow and the gortex sock makes the shoe difficult to put on. So sad but they will be going back.

My first 2 mile break in hike went ok but the tongue of the shoe would not stay up so the laces were touching my leg instead of the tongue, this was not fun. The switch to goretex exterior also made my feet quite a bit warmer. I decided to stick it out and went on a 15 mile hike and it was pretty bad. The shoes were too warm, the tongue rode down on me big time and the bottoms of both feet hurt quite a bit. I had never experienced this pain on any other shoe so I returned them. I am disappointed in every aspect of this model. The previous generation was far better. There are some odd flaws with these shoes that surprised me, at this price point I was expecting better and would stay away if you are buying these to be rugged.1. The shoe tongue is a disaster. The laces do not tie in or anchor the tongue and the tongue is not long enough so it barely gets over the laces when tied. What this means is that during a workout or a race the tongue creeps down below the laces, bunches up, or disappears to the lower laces. If Hoka was designing a rugged shoe for trail races or hikes, who would they not include a way to anchor the tongue. Major oversight.2. I said ok but when I go to do it on the website there's no place to write what's wrong w the shoe and there's a line that says "if your return is accepted..." what's the mean, I'm going to send my shoe back, not have them for months and the races I bought them for, only to get an email that my shoes are being returned as is as the warranty complaint was not accepted?I'd steer clear especially at this price point.
