A Compelling Choice for Race Day

The shoe looks like a basic trainer but don't be fooled: it is a thoroughbred speedster. The ride is semi-firm with high energy return (thanks to a carbon plate) while still being comfortable *enough* for longer distances. The Rocket X reminds me very much of Saucony's Endorphin Speed line in that it feels like it assists you through your stride. The snap-over effect is especially noticeable at sub-7:00/mile speeds.Best uses: For me, the Rocket X is best suited for race distances from 5k through half-marathons. They'd probably work well for full marathons for some but, for me, I prefer a more squishy cushion underfoot for that distance. When compared to my New Balance RC Elite v2s they are definitely more propulsive but lack the forgiving "squish" that the Fuel Cell foam has in spades. It comes down to preferences and I could see the Rocket X being a top choice for runners looking for PBs at a great price point.Overall: the Hoka Rocket X is a superb road-racing shoe that will suit different runners at a variety of distances.

Fast, With A Heel Wear Issue?

These are my first pair of carbon plate shoes. They are springy and fast, although as a slight heel striker, I needed to shift that forward to a more even yet firm midfoot strike to get the best "spring" from the stiff carbon plate. Unexpectedly, I now notice that there is more heel wear. The outsoles are made with two patches of wear-resistant material at the heel. Strangely these are not connected in the middle, where heel wear has first shown up on my shoes, and now spread sideways to both patches of the tougher material. The forefoot is much better protected and shows virtually no wear. For me, those heel patches need to be larger.

Great, fast shoe, but not necessarily for me

Full disclosure, I am relatively new to Hoka. Given the hype, I decided to try them out (props to Hoka for the 30-day trial period and easy returns). I wanted a long run, plated shoe that could double as a lightweight trainer / racer so I started with the Carbon X and found them way too firm for my liking. I returned those and ordered the Rocket X to try.First and foremost, I think these are a HUGE improvement on the Carbon X (at least for what I was looking for). They feel much softer on foot, are much lighter, and the rubber on the outsole should provide some added durability to make them more suitable as a trainer. There is no doubt these shoes can fly at faster paces on shorter runs (sub-6 min/mile), but I found them a bit uninspiring during longer training ... MoreFull disclosure, I am relatively new to Hoka. Part of it I would attribute to my own footstrike. I tend to be more of a mid foot/heel striker, but these shoes really shine when you are on the forefoot, so I found myself altering my gait to try and maximize the benefit of the shoe (which I worry about from an injury perspective). Also, the laces are obnoxiously long and can be really annoying if they aren't quadruple knotted. So while these are great shoes overall, I think I would find myself reaching for other pairs in my rotation over these for long training runs and they wouldn't be my first choice for a racer so I couldn't justify the price tag.I will definitely continue to look for other Hokas to add to my lineup as their products continue to evolve.About me: 25M, 160lbs, 40-50mpw, 1:25HM, 3:10M

Light weight but little support and not for uneven surfaces.
2 November 2022

This shoe would be great for track running but was not good on road surfaces around the neighborhood. I understand the desire to cut down on weight but the lack of foot support and width really makes these an ankle injury waiting to happen in my opinion. Lower back pain also started after using these.Save some money and get the Cliftons which are excellent all around and only weigh < 2 oz more than these.

Not likely
7 March 2023

I have purchased this model with one goal - I was looking for a light responsive race shoe. I have been wearing Hoka's daily for the past 5 years and it was time to try something other than a training shoes I have been wearing. I was cery happy how it fitted but after just 3 runs it didn't feel like a race shoe, it was more of a training shoe . I liked the stability , as of the carbon plate ... it almost feels as there is nothing there .... I definitely wouldn't recommend this shoe on wet surfaces.. even though this shoe didn't meet my expectations Im still a Hoka fan and will continue to support the brand anyway I can.

Unisex sizing makes for a difficult fit
4 September 2022

I wanted to love these shoes. They're certainly the right weight and have the perfect amount of cushion and stability. However, the unisex sizing is not true. They are narrow and very small. I ordered my typical HOKA size but my toes touched the end of the shoe, in a very narrow toe box. They entire shoe is atypically narrow for HOKA. I hope HOKA can figure out the sizing in this shoe because it has so many other positive features.

Very good shoe with some help
27 October 2021

Ran the Chicago Marathon in this shoe. It's a wonderful shoe! light, responsive, cushion for a soft landing, and carbon insert to help you move (when at higher paces). But the shoes need more grip toward the front as it's very slick when running on a wet surface (like near water and Gatorade break areas) and if your running fast a little slip can cause some serious issues.Overall, this is a great shoe. It's like the Rincon and Carbon X had a baby. Some heal slippage but nothing a runner's knot didn't fix and the upper did a good job venting out heat. The midsole is soft and very responsive for slower paces and the wide center really helps protect your ankles. Rolled ankles are commen when you are tired.

money well spent!

This shoe is fantastic! In training for my first marathon, I soon realized that I needed to invest in better shoes for my long runs due to my chronic knee issues and Achilles tendonitis that developed with my other shoes. I tried the carbon x2 in store and found them too stiff for my liking. I tried the Clifton 8 but they were way to big- especially in the toe box/wide for my medium to narrow feet though the cushioning was nice. Clifton's actually gave me blisters after a 20 min run because my feet were sliding all over the place. The Rocket X fit perfectly and has a cushioned yet responsive ride that is great for longer distances. My feet are in love. I did a 12 mi run in them today and they felt wonderful! superb racers!
7 February 2023

Did a few training runs (short, long, tempo) before racing in a half marathon. I love Hoka shoes and of all the ones I've run in, these are the best fitting and best performing. The only downside to mention is that, during the recent half marathon, it was raining hard for the first part of the race. While there was a lot of water over the roadway, the shoes did slip a bit on the pavement. Once the rain started to subside, even while the road was still damp, there was no more slippage at all- the soles were gripping even on the damp pavement. Overall, they're light, fast, have great road feel while still having plenty of mid-foot cushion (I'm a mid-foot striker).
