Amazing mountain ultra shoe- cush, grippy, nimble

Living in the San Juan's, and with my less then ideal running form I shred shoes fast. I wear down the heels of the minimal lug vibram in the speedboat 5's in less than 125 miles. I originally ran in the Challengers and as much as I loved those the durability was terrible for me. Ran the San Juan solstice 50 and they felt more than adequate as far as cushioning for that distance. I would not hesitate to run my next 100 in a fresh pair of these. They do not have a rock plate and you will feel the occasional non-ideal foot strike but the featherweight feel of this shoe while being super nimble with an aggressive grip for loose technical mountain running checks all the boxes for me!Good on width and size, may want to consider a half size up with a light/medium cushion sock as a general rule to keep your feet happy, also gives the ability to switch to a non-cushion sock to give more room later in a race.

The majority of my running is on non-technical mountain trails with some periods of road running to get between trails. Distances range anything from 7 to 15km. For this type of terrain I feel the Torrent 2 is an excellent shoe. It's grippy enough to handle loose gravel and rocky trails, yet the sole is on the softer side so short periods of road running are not agony. It's also light. If you're looking for a full on mountain shoe, then personal opinion is that this is unlikely the shoe you want. Even at some of the distances I run on more technical terrain I can occasionally feel terrain through the sole on harder impacts, which could prove uncomfortable for longer distances. This is my first Hoka trail shoe after running with another brand for a number of years. ... MoreThe majority of my running is on non-technical mountain trails with some periods of road running to get between trails. Decent shoe. Needs better ventilation

These shoes are comfortable, strudy, and provide good traction. They do the job for the light trail hiking that I do on a daily basis. My only concern with these particular shoes is that they do not seem to allow my feet to breathe enough. The ventilation in the upper is minimal and traps the heat in the shoe too much. Maybe they were designed this way for more waterproofing, I am not sure. I have only worn these in cold weather so far and would probably not use them in summer months or for long hikes. I have also not tried them on wet, slippery rocks yet, but the soles seem to be able to handle that.

Durability issues
23 July 2022

I really enjoyed these shoes. They provide a healthy amount of cushioning for their responsiveness. Recently purchased a second pair of these after the lugs on the first pair began peeling off at only around 100 miles. Lo and behold the second pair began peeling as well around 100 miles. They both peeled near the heel in multiple locations, and it was bad enough on both to create a trip hazard coming downhill on rocky/rooty NH terrain. I was also surprised at the amount the rubber lugs had worn in that time period. Just use an ounce extra of rubber to connect all the lugs and not create the potential for peel and I'd buy more.

Excellent ( with a caveat)
20 May 2021

I loved this shoe straight out of the box. I was looking for something light (and they are very light) with uppers that will meld and not compress my foot and the Torrents do the job nicely. I found the uppers quite breathable and even though I bought a half size larger than normal my foot was kept nicely in place on both the up and downhill with the lacing system and the heel padding.I loved the bouncy feel (like Tigger) and the sticky grip on the trails. So they were perfect on the woodland trails but here comes my issue of my own making. I knew that the Torrent does not have a rock plate and thought they are light with welts of padding in the sole so all will be good and for the most part you get lots of protection. It seems that rocks that are not too small and not too big and just the right size plus shaped like a pyramid you can feel through the shoe. So if there is way of adding a lightweight rock plate in the future that would be great. Of course I should have tried out the Speedgoat, but sadly test runs were not an option. The bottom line is the Torrents are "sick" but not totally "fangy", in the language of my kids.

Fast, not a Mountain Shoe
20 January 2021

Wanted a light and fast trail option, something less beefy than my Mafate Speed 2 and more aggressive than my Challenger ATR 5. The Torrent 2 is definitely both of those things, but it's not really a mountain shoe.Pros: Fast, Light Cons: No rockplate, outsole rubber is not grippy. I always size up a half in my running shoes (10.5 casual, 11 running). These fit most similar to my Rincons and are probably the narrowest Hokas out of those I have run in (Challenger ATR 5 Wide, Clifton 7 Wide, Mafate Speed 2, Evo Mafate, Rincon, Torrent 2)These move nice and quick on gravel rail trails, buffed out trails, and singletrack. The lack of rockplate is very apparent on rocky and rooty terrain. The lack of rockplate is very apparent on rocky and rooty terrain. The outsole rubber is just not sticky, and like another reviewer mentioned, it's actually kind of slippery on wet rock. The lugs are also pretty small. I took these on a 12 mile ridge traverse in NH over technical rocky terrain and I was the only person consistently slipping. I was also the only runner without Vibram on my soles. The difference between this rubber and the Vibram Megagrip on the Mafate Speed and Evo Mafate is night and day. I can confidently run up and down wet slab in those shoes; I'm afraid to even plant one step on wet rock in the Torrent 2 after one outing with them on a damp day. With all of that being said, this shoe is great for tempo days in the woods and on any terrain really other than more technical rocky running or running on wet rock. I ripped out a pretty good 5 mile course record on a rolly gravelly fireroad in these the first day I wore them. I have put about 120 miles on my Torrent 2 so far and I have not encountered any of the lug peeling issues that other reviewers have mentioned. The upper seems very well constructed and I assume this shoe will go 300+ miles.

This shoe has been a game changer for me...
22 January 2023

I referee high school and small college basketball, and at first I was a little hesitant of the shoe because of the low top cut. We do a lot of running and turning and cutting in basketball officiating, but I gave it a chance, and it has been a total game changer for me. Since then I have bought five different pairs of the shoe, and it has helped my feet tremendously. I am considering writing the Hoka corporation to see if they will consider developing a basketball officials running shoe with 3/4 top to protect our ankles, so I hope this message will reach who it needs to for consideration of this thought. As officials, we are always looking a shoe that can protect our feet, our lower back, and our knees for the season. Toned down Hokas

I hiked 400 kms on the Chemin St Jacques from Le Puy this summer in my Hoka Speedgoat 4 including tune-ups. I have also been using them at home. I appreciate the padding and they have held up well. But I did feel they were a bit high — almost like hiking in platform shoes (I grew up in the 70s). So after some positive reviews I decided to try these. They are more like regular trail runners. Grip is good. Overall they seem like solid shoes (I will try to update this after a few hundred kilometers if Alttude allows it). They fit well although they are a bit tight in the toes, especially with toe socks (not like Altras of course), but I think they do fine with regular socks. I don’t find the footbed quite as comfortable as my Inov-8 290s. I might wish for a rockplate. ... MoreI hiked 400 kms on the Chemin St Jacques from Le Puy this summer in my Hoka Speedgoat 4 including tune-ups. I have also been using them at home. After some extensive research I decided to give these a try. I run a good amount (30-35 miles per week) and have been a fan of Hokas for about 5 years. I've run in the Clifton and a couple versions of the Speed Goat as well as the Rincon 2s. I've loved all of them for different reasons, but they've all been great. In that time I've deviated from the brand a few times and had moderate success there, but I always come back to Hokas. They just feel so light and bouncy. These are no exception. I actually run mostly road with a bit of trail (I live in the city and getting out to trails happens about once a week) so I wanted something that could handle both decently well. Something that was light enough to compensate for the bulkiness of the lugs but could also handle the trails well. These have done that for sure. They strike a good balance between stability and flexibility. Almost like marrying the Speed Goat with the Rincon. I feel fast and light on the paths I run through our local park and I've tested them on a decently technical trail and they have handled both very well. I've put about 70 miles on them already and they're holding up well. Plus I've gotten a decent amount of complements when wearing them around town. They run true to size and have a decent amount of roominess in the toe box (they aren't Altras or anything). I highly recommend these shoes. Buy them! You won't regret it.

Trail shoe extraordinaire

Torrent to serve me really well hiking 5 to 8 miles a day for a week on varied and pretty steep terrain. But also super comfortable for the casual dog walk around the neighborhood.Love that it is more low to the ground than some of the more plush offerings, which I don't feel give me the springiness in maneuverability of the more responsive shoe like torrent.I drove myself a bit crazy researching whether to go with speed goat or Gaviota or zinial. In the end I think these are terrific shoe a great grippy soul, quite narrow and supportive. Feel a bit like my super comfy hupana with the extra grippy sole.
