I love this pencil. I was looking for an ivory pigment because I do a lot of gothic and vampire pictures and I needed something that works for a very pale complexion. I couldn't find another ivory pencil so I decided to bite the bullet and spring for the Holbein. It's definitely worth the price. It gives me the color, shade, tone I want and it lasts quite long. I will definitely be adding Holbein ivory to my pencil stash.

Yes, these pencils are expensive. I think the Luminance are the only ones that are more expensive. However, I see why they are. These pencils are smooth, sharpen to a nice point, and lay down pigment better than any other pencils I have used. Yes, including Polychromos, which I love! I cannot compare them to Luminance because I have not worked them as of yet. I will not stop using my Polychromos but I will not longer use Prismacolor (they are not made with the high quality they once were and imho are a waste of money). I wish there were a way to create your own sets for pencils. I NEVER use browns or greys (or neutrals) of any kind so buying sets are not good options for me because I end up with colors that I will never use.

These pencils are incredible. They are creamy, vibrant and blend like butter. I am an avid user of Holbeins watercolor (also an amazing product, one of the best watercolors, if not the best, in the world) and I tried out a small set of these in the pastel color arrangement, and my God, I was not expecting the pure butter in the center of these pencils. I had to get all of the colors, and by art supply pricing, this is not the worst pricing and it is worth it for the product. The pastels colors are what you buy this for no doubt, the darker colors are good too, but no other colored pencil I have ever used has the opacity of bright pastel colors like this does, nor the arrangement and amount of pastel colors. You could layer this on black paper and still see the ... MoreThese pencils are incredible. They are creamy, vibrant and blend like butter. You could layer this on black paper and still see the vividness of the color with only some black showing through. These layer and blend with other colored pencils wonderfully, and they layer on top of other media specifically markers, like copics, or watercolor. These are a must have for a colored pencil artist or a mixed media artist, they are truly wonderful.

The Holbein colored pencils are very nice pencils. They're well-pigmented, have smooth laydown, they're sturdier than similar pencils and they blend and layer very well. Their only drawback is that they are very expensive when compared to similar colored pencils. They do perform well, so I would recommend them to anyone who can afford them. That said, there are less expensive sets that perform as well.
I have used several brands of colored pencils. I tried these when they first became available in the U.S. I love these pencils! They layer nicely and burnish beautifully! They are great for highlighting with light colors over dark. They are butter soft, but do not crumble. Their softness allows them to layer when other, harder pencils scratch (and yes, I am guilty of a heavy hand). My only complaint is that the colorfast ratings have not been published, but on the barrel of each pencil is printed 1, 2, or 3 stars. I avoid the 1 star colors. That is why I rated them 4 stars instead of 5 in this review.
I think these pencils are lovely. They are soft and creamy. I find them to blend well overall. I gave most every brand of artist grade pencil out there and these colors are stunning. They perform similar to polychromos but are more opaque. Their softness is closest to Prismacolor. They dont layer as much as say Pablos due to their soft wax texture. Wax bloom is not an issue though due to that firmer lead. I think any pencil collector or artist should have these in their arsenal. The cost is not as high as luminance, or Pablo pencils. Price per pencil in the set is around 1.93 which is cheaper than most artist grade. Obviously prismas are more cost effective as are polychromos in their respective sets. Biggest drawback is open stock is not an option. Hopefully that ... MoreI think these pencils are lovely. They are soft and creamy. I find them to blend well overall. I am a professional color pencil artist, have been using color pencils for over 14 years. I have tried and buy from every color pencil company that's out there, but Holbein has by far the best selection of colors and best covering ability, being soft and super opaque, Works perfectly for me as I work using many layers of color. i sometimes change my mind and need to color over an area and again, Holbein works well with this. Many of their colors are color fast, which obviously is something I look for. My drawing s are very large for the average color pencil artist, always at least 60" width and length and most recently 60" x 80". I highly recommend this product. #sweepstakes
I have been using colored pencils for 60+ years. I use to love Prismacolor back in the day 1960's and 70's, then I found Faber Castel. I have tried Derwent, Cezanne, Caran d' Ache, Arteza, Lyra Rem., Schipirerr Farben and several others brands but I will have to say that the Holbein pencils far exceed any pencil I have used so far. They are highly pigmented, premium quality, super easy layering and blending and glide like butter onto the paper. I am including hashtag #sweepstakes hoping I win so I can purchase the 150 set. I want it sooooooo BAD! So, if you want Top of the Line and can afford the price go for Holbein. You will not regret it.
They are very smooth just like Prismas and they don't break. I got about 20 of the very light range because that's where my others many sets lack. They could improve on some lightfast issues but overall I really enjoy them and they are marked to know how lightfast they are. They blend without a blender and I love the light colors. They just normally are not in sets and can really make a painting glow underneath. I have 4-5 other artist grade pencils and am glad I bought the in between ones here. Unlike the Derwent Lightfast, I didn't feel that my pencils just withered away to nothing. And these seemed slightly more transparent but the white was the most opaque one I have used yet. Amazing #Sweepstakes
Ok these are my thoughts comparing them to other artist quality ones that I have. They are creamy but not waxy creamy like Luminance, they are a bit more creamy to me like Prisma but no breakages and great layers. A bit softer than Polychromos but just as fine. Ok compared to the Derwent Lightfast. The DL are beautiful but they are so soft that the pencils just whittle away very very quickly. I know that they say that they lean to being more oil based but I have seen wax blooms on them. All colored pencils contain both oil and wax anyways. I really do enjoy them but only buy when on sale. Compared to Pablos, (Holbein)they are just as sturdy the blend ability in Holbein's is AMAZING! And they are softer than the Pablo's. Ok they are slightly more transparent but I got the extra light pastelish and some skin lights and medium values with the intention of using them for the glow underneath and on top. They are exceptional at this. I love the variety for different reasons and do not have the whole set but if you already have a favorite set I am sure it doesn't contain the beautiful glowing lights. Wow! Anyways I hope that this helps. I am thankful that the lightfastness is included. #sweepstakes I was very surprised at how they blend. You hardly even have to try.
