Purchased the Homelite 6ton model for my parrents to help them out, but it requires two individuals operating it.Does not split logs all the way through and can not split logs with nuts. Not to mention its so slow.Struggles imensly with logs larger than 9".My honest advice do not waste Ur time, get a larger unit.

Yes, I know the argument that you get what you paid for but does this mean that a lesser price the product barely meets its stated purpose ?The Homelite Log Splitter will undoubtedly split most logs but imperfectly. That is because the ramrod doesn't have enough travel to push a log right up to the cutting wedge. It stops about 10cm before and this means mostly logs will have to be fully separated by hand and axe.The safety feature of simultaneously pushing on the power switch and activating lever is just too awkward and position the user on the right side of the splitter. In case of exploding logs, this is not where you want to be. The safest place is behind the unit.Apart from the obvious design faults, build quality is also poor. The unit is held together ... MoreYes, I know the argument that you get what you paid for but does this mean that a lesser price the product barely meets its stated purpose ?The Homelite Log Splitter will undoubtedly split most logs but imperfectly. I'm certain most people rather pay the extra few dollars.I would not buy unit again.

I I sed mostly hardwood and it ran into trouble straight away. Small ones were ok. To split anything bigger than say 3” in diameter I had to score it with a chainsaw or circular saw. And Instead of splitting log in the middle I tried the edges first, working my way into the middle, but after two Months it stopped working. This log splitter is designed for small logs and cutting already cut logs into smaller pieces, and it performs that job really well.

Great... when it works.
11 February 2022

I bought one two years ago, within a dozen bits of wood it'd lost all of its push. Replaced under warranty. New one functioned well for two firewood seasons, quite impressed by its capability. Then it lost its push as well. Exactly the same symptoms as before.I discussed the symptoms of the failure with my father who has worked with hydraulics quite a bit, and he told me that it sounded like the hydraulic piston seal. So, with it now being out of its warranty period, I opened it up and sure enough there was a mark across the hydraulic seal. And being designed for the American market, its Imperial. In summary, when it works it's great, but is very prone to failures which most people will be unable to fix.

Log splitter

Had for 2 days - it splits logs along the grain ( as it should ) not across the log as it’s not designed to do so I fail to understand the complaints. If it breaks down it’s with a manufacturing or users fault. If you at attempting to split a log the total length it will obviously fail. I own an engineering firm - I’d put logs with relatively clean grain and no major knots and you won’t have problem

Poor example of an electric splitter
26 May 2023

These kinds of splitters get mixed reviews and I think I know why. The issue lies with the manufacturer. I owned a different brand of the same splitter previously and it worked very well for 2 seasons. I split some large twisted grain eucalyptus logs, probably way larger than intended and it did a respectable job. Then it lost its oomph by the 3rd season. Reason it turned out was the integrated hydraulics without a filter that circulates metal swarf from the pump gears and abrades the piston seal until it leaks internally. Then the ram loses pressing power. In hindsight I would change the fluid every year (more frequently than specced) and it might have lasted. Now to this Homelite unit that I got, mine came with a leaky seal from brand new. Won't split all but the ... MoreThese kinds of splitters get mixed reviews and I think I know why. So this is the reason some say theirs works great and others say it's hopeless.

Simple to assemble, easy to use.

A lovely little suprprise. You know the saying "You get what you pay for..." Well this might well put that saying to rest. At a reasonable price $350 (half price of well known brands) we expected that this might not do as much as the others. Our logs are heavy, too heavy for me to carry, so I wanted them split. I thought this machine might not be a match for the 15kg + logs, and if it can't - -it won't! So you know you can't 'force' it. It will stop. No damage to the machine, if it thinks it's too hard. Fair enough.Easy 5 mins to assemble, it's only the legs, check the fluid in hydraulic and plug it in. Once you get the idea you're away. This gets a little hard on your back, a little at a time will probably be enough. We lasted about 30mins and get 3 wheelbarrow loads. So roughly 10mins a load.Clean up is easy, just brush off the wood chip.Be aware of the logs jumping off the splitter, these can leap 1m just make sure no feet are in the way. When it does it makes a big noise! So glad we purchased. Thanks Homelite for making the perfect splitter for home use.

What a great little unit
28 July 2022

Spoke to Tom (Castle hill) store very helpful. This 5 ton log splitter has had a lot of mixed reviews so wasn’t sure what to expect. The two most important things to do with this unit is to make sure the wingnut at the front you do the one and a half turns as The instructions and when you place the wood in the unit insure that it follows the grain. I was very impressed with its performance and I have attached photos to assist you in making your decision. This was fifteen minutes work.

Works a treat
4 May 2023

I bought this unit a month ago. I was a bit apprehensive after reading some very negative reviews ..However this is a cheap low powered unit...If used as such, it is more than capable. Since purchase, I have split 3 cubic mtrs of gum with no issues at all. I have kept the logs no larger than 300 x 300mm. Have noticed that if the (blade) is kept sharp it works a treat. I have modified the motor button with a lever (no more finger cramps} I also made a dedicated stand with a foot operated pedal for the hydraulic lever. This gives me one hand to control the wood. I have also attached apprx 100mm of hardwood (with flexible straps) to the ram allowing the logs to be split their full length. With this setup I am very happy with this unit

Works like a charm
9 July 2022

Bought this today. Set it up in a few minutes, first log I tried had a split in it already, machine went through it like butter. Tried various logs nearly dried wood through to nearly green. Never missed a beat. Most of the logs we spli were less than 250 mm across. If you operate the splitter without opening the butterfly valve you are likely to damage the piston seal and it will not work after that. Read the instructions, open the air bleed butterfly valve at least two full turns and you will have no problems
