Bought mine back in Feb 2022 to use on the kayak but couldn't use till nearly 6 months later due to a problem getting the waterproof thru-hull cable plugs I initially wanted/ordered. (For fellow kayakers out there - the Hobie ones are almost impossible to get atm so I went for the Wilderness Systems ones - less than a week shipping from Amazon Australia. Just use plenty of Sika marine sealant to get an even better seal). These units are great out-of-the-box to just plug in & start using but it pays to do your homework to get the most out of them if you've never used a fishfinder before, Now I've done that, watched many tutorials & tested it out on the water a bunch of times I'm pretty stoked with it. Compared to other brands there's a lot of bang for buck here. Not really using sidescan as much as I thought but that may come into its own later. By all accounts after you tweak the settings to your liking the downscan is comparable to more expensive models & using the fish reveal feature with it certainly highlights fish & structure very well. Being able to add the clock/time to the display is one simple feature I personally love. Added tips for kayakers - get a 12v regulator between the battery & fishfinder as the unit can shut off when battery power goes below 11-11.5v - well before your battery is out of juice. Also use the Standby feature as much as possible when not scanning to prolong battery life.

Out of the box, nothing was ā€œpresetā€. It did not come with instructions. And today 3 months later it doesn’t show depth, temperature nor bottom or side view as advertised. I had shoulder surgery & I have not had an oppurtunity to even cast for the past 2 months. Where can I send this thing to get it to work? It’s still under warranty. And BPS hasn’t been much help! 🤬😔

Easy to use and I love the maps!!

I have had depth finders in the past but nothing this high tech! I think it is great for beginners. Easy to use and navigate. Also the "Auto" options, where the finder will set itself up is great until you can learn what manual settings you prefer. Also the preloaded maps are worth it!!! First trip out was eveing and into the night. Going up the resevoir and into the river I had the finder mark our trail. Heading back to the ramp in the early morning, the tempature had dropped and the fog on the water was EXTREMELY thick. At times visibility was 10ft or less. I was able to follow the trail we had saved going in, to get back out!!! Otherwise we would have had to wait for the fog to lift.Well worth the price in my opinion!! Good depth finder so far
5 November 2023

I have had this product for about a year and so far I have used it for a depth finder and very little more. The sidescan is about useless as I have seen VERY little in my sidescan except once I could see the vague outline of a manatee that swam by me. So far I have seen NOTHING even resembling the pictures they use in the advertisements. I did try to get some support from Lowrance on their website and got put into an endless loop of clicking on the next link to find no help or right back where I started. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had with fish finders. I will NEVER buy another Lowrance. I would also encourage Hobie to run away from partnering with them!Looks like Hummingbird are MUCH more dependable.

Great fish finder -GPS unit
19 March 2023

By far easiest install than my previous Lowrance fishfinder-GPS. I have been installing these for 30 years. What I like most is the fact components on unit have evolved to smaller diameter and length of cables. Unit has just right features where I’m not trying to find (fumbling) options on screen/menu. Good price and love the larger screen. Can see very easy in bright sun conditions.

I love Lowrance products. However, this product has a severe limitation that makes it nearly useless for me. We all know that one of the great benefits of Lowrance products is the ability to create and share C-Map Genesis Live contour maps. This unit does that. No problem. I have spoken to three different Lowrance representatives and, apparently, what this unit cannot do is load Genesis Live data created by other Lowrance users. What that means for anyone who buys this unit is the following: You cannot go to the C-Map Genesis website and download Genesis Live maps that other users have created and load them into the unit. This seems completely crazy to me as the unit is fully capable of creating and reading (via the Genesis Live overlay option) the EXACT SAME FILE TYPES when creating a Genesis Live contour map. So, in short, the unit can create and read Genesis Live map data, but cannot load and read the exact same type of data created by other users. What does the mean for you? Let's assume you want to go to a water near you that has already been mapped on Genesis Live. Although your unit can create such maps and can read the data it created, it cannot load maps created by other users into the unit. Infinitely stupid. This seems to me to be an extremely short sighted exclusion of functionality on the part of Lowrance. Let me reiterate; the unit can create and read the same files require to create Genesis Live data but it cannot read/load the exact same file types created by other users. This means that you, the user, cannot load Genesis Live data into the unit for viewing when on waters that have been mapped by other users. This, for lack of a better word, is stupid. If all that you want to do is mark fish with the sonar/downscan/sidescan, then this unit is for you. If, however, you want to use the unit for Genesis Live overlays created by other users, which the unit can seemingly do, you are out of luck. If you want this functionality do not buy the X series Hook Reveal.

Looks like it will be a good sounder/ maps unit
31 January 2021

I've only been out with the Hook Reveal 7 twice now, first time the sounder wasn't working - the GPS/ maps part was OK but transducer wasn't working - advice in BCF shop suggested to default the unit. I did this, and all was OK next time out. I've only had one sounder before this one coincidentally a Lowrance (Elite 4), which was already fitted to previous boat. When I was looking at sounders for new boat, the display BCF had in store was excellent. I didn't find anywhere else that had such a good display of sounders. When I was in store there was a staff member there who knew sounders very well. My reason for buying this sounder was first my new boat was already fitted with Lowrance transducer, plus I was happy with the other Lowrance I had, but that one didn't have maps. Originally the boat dealer was going to provide a 5" Lowrance head unit, but when I mentioned I was interested to have maps, they suggested the bigger screen of 7" unit would be much better visually. This made perfect sense, so I was happy to go with the bigger unit. The dealer didn't have a 7" unit readily available and suggested I look at BCF to see the differences in screen sizes. I bought the 7" Combo unit from BCF, which the boat dealer fitted. Not being a fishing guy I can't advise on how good this unit is for fish finding, I can say the maps looks good, the 7" screen is good and fine in direct sun light. One thing I recall my Elite 4 did was allow bigger character size on screen for depth etc, where as this one with bigger screen surprisingly the character size choice I think is small and medium only, whereas the Elite had large font size as well. On price I did compare elsewhere but didn't find cheaper elsewhere. I'm happy to recommend this this unit, and also buying it from BCF, and also suggest checking out BCF for the excellent Sounder display they have (I bought from Caloundra store).

No ability to add maps& transducer cable too short
23 June 2022

The X model does not come with maps, which is stated, however…it has ZERO ability to add downloaded maps. They should make that feature available. At least you can ā€œcreateā€ you own depth maps with a 2-32gb micro sd card. Also, the transducer cable is 20 feet. I have a 20 foot Grady White and the cable was about 3 feet too short. After going up the transom, down into the wiring tube, then up the helm console…I was about 3-4 feet short. Had to cut a brand new cable and splice a section in. WHY?? WHY can’t they make it 30 feet?? You can always coil up the extra, but if it’s too short, it’s a pain to lengthen it.

Not worth the money.

Big name like Lowrance and alot of advertised features that are difficult to use or impossible to get to work properly. Very disappointed overall. There are no instructions included, there is a quick guide on a card that just says to install transducer where you want it and turn unit on after plugging it in to a power source... Doesnt explain how to select or setup your transducer. Still cant find any information at all about what transducer I even have, I purchased the Splitshot model, but the transducer I have doesnt look anything at all like the one ive found on the internet. When I select the Splitshot transducer on the list, I get okish 2d graph? Alot of lines, everywhere. I see images on the internet of like photo like images of the bottom, grass, fish, and timber structure perfect. But for the life of me all I get is bluish colored blobs. Or whatever color palate I choose colored blobs. And the HD blobs dont match with the 2d blobs which makes me think im not even seeing anything below the boat. I went with Lowrance because I liked the genisis live ability but its alot more difficult to use, having to back up/use different buttons to navigate through it. Overall expected alot more compared to lower priced hummingbird and garmin units.

revise the installation manual
20 November 2023

I have just gotten into putting the unit on my ranger. I was expecting a manual that I could read , But got a pamphlet full of foreign language of which I can't read. Along with the booklet of foreign languages a bunch of pictures that are to do the installation with out any instruction to do the installation. The installation takes a long time should have some written info along with the pictures as to operate the unit. Very poor instruction system.
