I’m truly astonished by this 4K projector. I bought it as a second screen for my living room. My current TV is 55 inches, and I didn’t want to buy a bigger one since I move every 6 months. I first bought the Xgimi Horizon Pro 4K, but saw that this model came out a few weeks ago. I read a few technical reviews on this model and figured it’d be worth a shot. I would normally buy an LG or Sony OLED TV because of the picture quality, but I wanted a big screen in the form of something portable enough for moving between rooms in my home (and home-relocation, when the time comes). Here are my thoughts on the Ultra HD model… Pros: 1. Beautiful picture, with rich colors and great detail, that’s close enough to the feel of watching a TV for 99% of people. 2. Beautiful design with much-appreciated light dimmer with motion sensor, should an object/person get in the way of the projection, making it safe for the eyes of little ones and critters. Cons: 1. Though beautiful and “premium,” I’m concerned that the PU leatherette aurface will be a magnet for my cats to scratch, and im concerned how this will age in the long run as I move it from room-to-room. 2. There is the occasional glitch with the Xgimi software when streaming directly from the projector’s OS. Ideally, I’d stream video from my XBox Series X, because that produced the best video quality of any non-Blu-Ray player I’ve seen; although, a Chromecast dongle would work sufficiently well for a more seamless option.

I REALLY wanted to like this product. They took a success in the Horizon Pro and added Dolby Vision, Dual Light and the promise of much higher light output. I will say that the packaging was outstanding and the presentation was top notch but you buy a projector for the video quality and this has one major flaw. The projector forces you into Dolby Vision (a majority of quality streaming content is now Dolby Vision) and unfortunately the MEMC is disabled while utilizing Dolby Vision. I confirmed this with XGIMI as well to make sure I wasn't missing something. One of the major reasons for using XGIMI projectors is the smooth video output and that is just not possible with this projector. The image will always be right. This is an XGimi innovation.CONS;Remote has no back-lighting, which makes it hard to get used to. But, with some practice, the remote should be easy to use.Menus are somewhat slow popping up: This could be irritating at times.No Lens Shift: If you are using a fixed screen configuration, the unit must be hard-mounted, removing the “portable” designation.Optical Zoom feature is a bit clunky and loud.The light engine puts out a lot of heat. It could use another fan to cool it down.MY ASSESSMENT:When I first turned the Horizon Ultra on, I noticed the picture was set from the factory, which is normal. However, I was unfamiliar with all the features of this little gem, especially using the remote control which, as I had mentioned before, is not back-lit. I was in my home theater in the dark and fumbling with the remote to get the picture centered. It was, at first, exasperating. But I finally got used to it and centered the picture right where I wanted it. Then, the most amazing thing happened; I was blown away by the picture quality! I have an Epson 5040UB (the UB standing for “Ultra Bright”) hanging in my theater room. It is generally bright, but tends to get washed out in the daylight. But reviewing the Horizon Ultra, it is almost TOO bright. I had to adjust the picture levels through the custom picture settings. Once I did this, the picture stood out. Great colors and no bleeding (bleeding is when the colors are blown out and “bleed” onto other areas of the picture.) This is due to the LED lasers driving it. The biggest advantage to this projector is that the lasers last a minimum of 20,000 hours, so there is no need to ever replace the bulb in it; it truly is set and forget. Another advantage of the Horizon Ultra is the lack of pixel separation. You can get right up inches from the image and you will see no pixels. Even the best TVs made will show some pixel separation. This makes the image more lifelike. It even has an automatic lens cover to protect the lens when not in use and transporting.CONCLUSION: If you are looking for a great value in a projector, you won’t find anything better than the XGimi Horizon Ultra. The price-point of $1699 is incredible, considering all the features and longevity of the projector. And the pros definitely outweigh the cons here, so if you can live with the cons, then you won’t go wrong with this projector. I give the XGimi Horizon Ultra my highest recommendation.
