Probably the most iconic Pacific Express design of locomotive in Great Britain, the LNER Gresley A4, with its streamlined casing, was a classic symbol of the attitude towards speed and design in the 1930s. The 1930s saw increased competition to the railways from road and air travel and the LNER Board knew that they had to make travel between the major cities faster, more comfortable and more reliable. High speed diesel services were starting to make an impact abroad, in May 1933, the German State Railways diesel-electric Fliegende Hamburger entered service, running for extended periods at 85mph and by 1934, in the USA, Burlington Zephyr had reached I I 2.5mph during a longer 1,015 mile journey.

I got this loco in 2016 for Christmas. I used her a few times, then sold my layout. She's my Dad's favourite loco I have in my collection, and in real life. In the past few months, my interest in model has re-ignited itself. So when we got the Christmas decorations out, I found Mallard in her box in the loft, covered in dust. I set up a loop of track, and boy, after 5 years, HALF A DECADE, she ran like a dream, straight out of the box! 10/10 to Hornby. 100% recommend, great value!

Fabulous little train.

Sounds and looks great for a railroad model. Detail level isn't high but that does mean it's more robust and able to deal with minor mishaps without damage. Mine is LOUD and that's a good thing. It's not as clever as the more expensive sound decoders but you'll pay double the price. I would highly recommend for kids of appropriate age and adults who aren't too hung up on super levels of detail.

Fast and smooth Mallard

Great looking train with exelent detail.
29 June 2021

I purchased this for my grandson who loves steam trains. This is a Digital train with TTS Sound. The detail on the train is excellent and the quality of the TSS sound is good. If you are a model railway buff, you will know all about setting up and tweaking the CVs!!!!! that volumes of the individual sounds, setting up the acceleration and deceleration of the train, to you and me. Not a clue. However, depending on your Digital Controller (we have a Hornby Select), then I recommend you check out the online videos, which walks you through the various operations.

Hornby RailRoad 4468 'Mallard' Review
28 April 2018

The RailRoad 'Mallard' is a very good model for those who are just starting out with model railways. The sprung buffers, separate nameplates and cab detail is a lot more than some other models. This model is very good if you are just starting out and are not too worried about detail.-Peter'sTrains

Our son will love this Mallard
13 June 2019

We bought this Mallard Steam locomotive for our sons 5th birthday for his current train set. He will love it. Great attention to detail. The model is beautiful and goes like, well, like Mallard did back in the day! Smooth and fast. Highly recommended.

The best product what I ever buy
16 May 2023

Guys this model is so perfect. This model has the least details and it is so fast. Btw this is my favorite locomotive. (I buy it before 4 yrs and price was lower).

The locomotive has couplings rod
3 August 2022

The locomotive has couplings rod issue the couplings rod creaks when running and the loco to tender couplings do make clicking noise when changing direction the buffer holding is poor. The motor on the engine look good but it has no torque. Over all its good.

Very nice model, however extremely
8 March 2022

Very nice model, however extremely tight packaging meant it was very difficult to take out the polystyrene. Resulted in damage to very fine details on the reverse side of the modle.
