Another outstanding product from Hoya. Better get as I was informed of limited production. I guess you could always purchase cheaper quality ones but you will get what you pay for. Yes it is glass and not plastic. I got mine to fit a spare filter holder for Nikon 300 2.8 ais lens. Works wonderful but will not fit normally. I happen to have extra filter holder that I had for future parts, I only had to have center hole enlarged and retreaded, now all 39mm filters fit. I can also double stack slim filters, How about that Nikon.

Great polarizer, bought on a whim. My usual weapon of choice would be a Tiffen, but they were back-ordered and I was impatient. No complaints with the Hoya whatsoever and it was competitively priced. Does the job as well as any other brand and it is well-built, smooth action on the ring.

The Cases for these and Tiffen filters are not intuitive -- as some have said, they should be round and circular screw off. They are odd and square pop open style cases. Yes that makes it easy to open, but you will definitely need a pouch system in order to hold these and the rest of your filters. Otherwise the filter is great and has good light transmission. This works great in my mobile and run & gun package for photos/video work on older lenses. Pro: - Works great - good for run and gun/low budget Con: - Case sucks - threads and construction aren't as good as Tiffen

I've used Hoya filters for 50 years now and they've never disappointed. However I knocked off 2 stars for packaging. I'm really disappointed with the 'box' they come in. No longer a convenient round box with screw off cap. It's now a square clam shell box with a hanging hole for a wall peg. Difficult to open and inconvenient to carry in a bag. You may need to get a filter wallet. I know that's being picky, but a good case is just as important as the precision glass filter. Bring back the old cases.
Have observed that my circular polarizers, necessary for modern exposure metering, do not give as much filtration as the linear polarizers. Since much of my photography is in manual mode, and I need optimal polarization, I'm returning to linear for my set up.Just take your best circular polarizer and look around you with it, noticing the characteristic reflection reduction. Then take a linear and look at the same things.... While the circular polars do in fact work, compared to the linears, they're just mild ND filters.I do wish they were offered with the coatings that are available on the circular though.
I purchased this to put in front of a circular polarizer to have a variable ND filter. This is how the much more expensive variable neutral density filters work. Circular polarizers actually are a linear polarizer in front with a quarter wave plate underneath so that after the polarized light that gets through the linear front part, the light is then is unpolarized by the quarter wave plate so as to not give problems with autofocus systems. By putting another linear polarizer in front without the quarter wave plate, the light remains polarized after going through the linear polarizer and the circular polarizer can now adjust how much light will get through to the camera. By putting another linear polarizer in front without the quarter wave plate, the light remains polarized after going through the linear polarizer and the circular polarizer can now adjust how much light will get through to the camera. By crossing the polarizers, almost no light gets through while if both polarizers are in alignment, almost as much light get through as with just one polarizer. Initial tests show it works better than I imagined. With polarizers crossed, it is over a 9 stop ND filter, in the league with the Lee Big Stopper etc. while it also can be dialed back to only a few stops. Plus, you get all the features of a polarized filter. If you need to hold one of the two polarizers in place while rotating only one of them, a small piece of gaffers tape does the trick. I will have to check for color shift, but even that is not too hard to deal with using a white and gray reference card and then digital photo software to readjust the color balance. Do make sure you have a good circular polarizer in back of the linear polarizer. There are some that are made for low-light photography that pass more light through. I suspect these do not have as sharp a polarization cut-off and thus may not be able to give +9 stop ND. Linear polarizers are relatively inexpensive and if you get one as large as you largest circular polarizer, some step-down rings will fit it to your smaller circular polarizers.
Overall I needed this filter for my Nikon 500mm f8 mirror reflex lens as all I had was the standard Nikon 39mm UV filter for it. The Linear Polarizer has worked beautifully even though I was worried that it may not have cleared the mirror when shooting but once installed it cleared perfectly.
My original polarizer for this lens was cracked and I knew I needed a new one. I use it when taking pictures of sunsets, or if the sun is very bright throughout the day. It fits my lens well and the pricing on this item was very reasonable. I would recommend it to others. The delivery of the lens was very prompt. Ellen P.
Bought this for use with my Fuji XF 18-55. Works well - does what a polarizer is supposed to do - and does not noticeably degrade resolution. I was a little curious about linear polarizers once I learned that circular polarizers are only needed for SLRs (mirrors). Indeed, mirrorless cameras focus & meter just fine with linear polarizers. For the cost, this is a great bargain. The frame is made of aluminum, so be gentle when threading it on to the lens - it can get stuck if you torque it down too strongly.

Hoya 82mm POLARIZING Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarised and polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. PL (Linear Polarising) and PL-CIR (Circular Polarising) filters have the same effect, but it is important that you choose the correct version for your camera. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. They also enable colours to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds. HOYA's polarising filters do not affect the overall colour balance of a shot.
