The ink cost is low and very easy to pour into printer tanks. The print quality is excellent for what I'm printing. It's relatively fast, but you might have to wait just a few seconds for it to get going. HP Smart Tank 7001 is fantastic and supports print, scan, and copy with borderless printing capabilities. I scan a lot, the scanning is clean and accurate. The copy feature is the best. Coping single pages is easy. Place the page on the scanner, press either the color or monochrome button, and then the 7001 will print out a copy. The paper tray holds up to 250 pages while the output tray holds up to 100 pages. When printing documents for work or school the black print quality was fantastic. Color photos on photo paper came out looking very high quality. With this printer, you can do remote printing, mobile faxing, mobile scanning, adjust print settings, add additional HP printers to your network, create shortcut and storage locations for files, images, and faxes, and invite other people to your HP Smart cloud. The HP Smart Tank 7001 is a solid performing, full featured, and economical all in one printer. It also seems like it will be much more economical using the ink refills rather than cartridges as well. Highly recommended. I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest opinion.

Good printer with ink savings

This printer grabbed my attention because it features ink tanks versus requiring the need to replace several ink cartridges. While the price of the printer might deter some people from buying it, the savings realized by its efficient use of ink and inexpensive refills will overall make it comparable to less expensive makes and models that still rely on the ink cartridges. One thing to keep in mind too--other than a few cases when you may experience a lemon product, you should be able to get a lot of use out of this model if you take care of it. Familiarize yourself with its features. Several online forums and literature can help. The printer works just fine using a USB cable, in case you're wondering. Familiarize yourself with its features. Several online forums and literature can help. The printer works just fine using a USB cable, in case you're wondering. You can also fit a USB-C to USB adapter to your old USB printer cable so that you can connect your printer to a USB-C port on your computer or laptop. The HP Smart app is there for you to use, if you so choose. Some people may experience issues with it. Others may just love it. Just know that there are ways to work around it if you don't want to use the app. For example, an Ubuntu operating system automatically detects the printer, and you won't have to bother with having to download and install HP Smart. It would have been nice to have a document feeder option, for scanning or copying multiple pages at once. And it would have been nice to have a guage in front of the paper feed tray to help keep your paper options of various lengths in place. I'm sure we can think of some hacks to keep the paper in place. I think because the printer is set up to be more of a wireless printer while using the HP Smart app, it relies on its few push buttons and its small and narrow display screen. This might throw some of you off, especially if you're used to other printers with larger touchscreen displays (and more touchscreen options). Again, familiarize yourself with the printer's features, and you won't be totally lost. Overall, this printer should do a fine job.

So, this printer is good. It would be nice if it had a document feeder at the rear for say photo printing, and would be nice if it had duplex scanning. At this price point, they should be included. To get around the duplex scanning, you can download HP scan app, which prompts you to scan one side through the ADF, reinsert the pages, scan the second side, and it will auto arrange the pages. This software is pretty horrible. So I found NAPS2 free open source scanner software, which does the same, and is much nicer to use. The HP software is horrible. Be it on Android or PC.. If you have a VPN - eg nord/ivpn etc, make sure it is OFF prior to setting up the printer. I worked this out around 6 hours after starting to set up the printer. You will need to do some split tunneling and change some settings in your vpn software to be able to use the printer AND be connected to your VPN. This was never an issue with my previous printer. There is nothing to prompt that the VPN is the problem - most of the printer works - but scan from phone wouldn't work, it would just say the feature is not available on this printer. I chose this over the say the Epson, as this has easily replacable print heads which will inevitably clog. The Epson are hard to remove comparatively, and I was unable to find any to buy locally.. Print quality is ok. I get some banding if printing photos with large areas of blue - eg sky, water.. It is nice and quiet, and quick to start printing. Filling tanks and inserting print heads is easy. Good, basic printer, at a premium price for the refillable ink tanks.

Great printer!!
25 February 2023

I bought this printer to replace another HP printer to get away from the expensive ink cartridges that would either dry up within days of starting to use and end up having to just keep buying ink. So i decided to get the smart tank and give it a shot. First the bad.. while my last HP printer's paper tray was way better for several reasons like how you could add photo and regular paper in at the same time and just select which to use before printing the smart tank only allows either paper or photo and you have to change out each time. The paper size adjustment tabs on my last printer were way easier and smoother to adjust but on the smart tank the tabs are extremely stiff and feels like you may break them when trying to adjust them to the paper/photo size. The paper size adjustment tabs on my last printer were way easier and smoother to adjust but on the smart tank the tabs are extremely stiff and feels like you may break them when trying to adjust them to the paper/photo size. Next my last printer from HP had automatic slides that came out to catch the paper when you printed anything but on the smart tank everything is manual and are also really stiff to get get out. But to me these things are minor but the major bad that i have come across so far is that the printer has froze up on me twice and had to unplug it to reset it. This could be due to needing an update or something so ill have to wait longer to see if it continues. Now the good. Honestly this printer overall is freaking aweome... everything i could do with my last printer i can not only do but it does more. For example the smart tank does double sided printing which i tried out lol, and at first i thought how is it going to do it but then it pulled the paper back into the printer and when it came out it was printed on both sides. The imaging or print quantity is way better than i could have imagined especially with the photos. So far i have printed close to 1000 pages and have printed about 30 photos so far stopping and restarting a few days later to see what this printer will do and i have to say i am extremely impressed. Days after printing anything i can go back and just start printing without having to fight with the ink cartridges. And the biggest plus is that all the printing i have done so far the printer has barely used any if the ink which is amazing considering all the photos I have printed. I do recommend this printer to anyone. It is alittle pricey but trust me and spent the extra money. While you may spend $180 on a printer then imagine all the cost on ink cartridges and that adds up quick. I have read reviews on the smart tank printer where a woman said something about HP needs to color code something as to know where what color ink goes where but im not sure what she was talking about because this printer's ink tanks are colored so i would say that was user error and she was trying to blame someone else. Overall this is a great printer.

Great printer, but a pain to set up
28 August 2022

After doing a LOT of research on cartridge-free printers, I'm glad I found this printer. Despite the many models of Epson EcoTanks, few seemed to have all the features I wanted, as the HP 7301 does, particularly auto-duplex printing and wireless connectivity. And those that did have those features were unavailable! Though the HP 7301 doesn't have a phone connection for faxing (a now somewhat antiquated technology but still needed occasionally), it's easy to send (but not receive!) faxes by scanning the content and then using HP's software to send that content to a particular fax number. Works fine! Works fine! As with all the cartridge-less printers, the 7301 is pretty pricey, but you save an enormous amount by not spending $30 for a paltry amount of ink in each cartridge: the same amount of money buys a huge amount of ink for this printer! And the quality of the prints is terrific: crisp and color-correct, something that reviews of Epson and Canon copiers sometimes criticized. My major problem with this printer is the clunkiness of the software and getting the printer set up. I had trouble getting back into setup mode when it was interrupted. Follow the instructions carefully, because the process is inordinately complex! The biggest setup hassle by far was the failure of the tricolor printhead. The black printhead installed without problem, but numerous tries to install the tricolor printhead failed. After running the gauntlet to actually talk to a person at HP Support (an involved and time-consuming annoyance), I was told by the agent to simply return the printer to the seller (Staples). Besides being a hassle, it seemed to me a complete waste to return a brand new printer because a single part malfunctioned, and I told the agent so. Only when I insisted did she get permission from her supervisor to mail me a replacement tricolor printhead, which fixed the problem, and surely saved HP and Staples money! So after using this printer for several months, I can recommend it highly, once you succeed in setting it up.

Great quality, quiet "all-in-one" printer
10 June 2022

This is a great quality printer/copier/scanner from HP! It is quiet, quick, and does the job for my home office. Upon opening the box, it was larger than I expected. I am a fairly tech-savvy person, and I thought the instruction booklet would be easy for anyone to follow, however, there were some technical difficulties with initial set up. I was unable to connect it to the internet via HP Smart app on my laptop and had to set it up via HP Smart app on my phone first, then I could add it to the laptop. The app shows you the amount of ink left, as well as the number of pages of paper in the tray, which is pretty cool. The app shows you the amount of ink left, as well as the number of pages of paper in the tray, which is pretty cool. I like that this printer uses ink tanks as opposed to ink cartridges, which should be more cost effective and environmentally friendly. There are separate buttons on the printer to copy in color, copy in black and white, and copy a double sided card (like an ID) to print on one side. The copier is a flatbed copier/scanner, so if you need to copy/scan many pages, it may be a bit tedious. The plastic "lid" on the copier feels a little flimsy, and only stays up if completely open. Scanning is controlled by the HP smart app on the computer or phone. You can scan to a .jpg or .pdf, and you can change the quality of the scan. The higher quality, the longer it takes. I scanned the front page of the instruction booklet in 300 dpi (default setting), which looks great and was quick. You can scan multiple pages into one PDF and crop the scans as you go, or pick a size to scan (i.e. 8.5x11) if all the pages are the same, but again, you do have to scan the pages one at a time. Unless I missed it, there didn't seem to be any instructions included on how to use this printer after setup, so I had to Google it to figure it out. Overall, this is a great all-in-one printer and I would recommend for daily home or office use with an emphasis on printing. If you scan or copy multiple pages (greater than 5-10 pages) frequently, it may be better to get an all-in-one with a paper feeder. *I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest opinion. PROS: - Print/Copy/Scan quality (higher quality with flatbed) - Quick

Overall good enough, once past some problems
6 November 2022

I was looking for a compact, not-ugly, lightweight, color printer, with a flatbed scanner (ideally without a document feeder)… I know. Picky. I really wanted a laser but too large for my space, and I dreaded going back to inkjet with the overpriced ink tanks. In the end I settled on trying the Smart Tank 7001. Important note: I’ve run my own IT support/computer repair business since 2004. I’ve probably setup hundreds of printers of all types in that time. Getting a good one is luck of the draw. I don’t know if I’d recommend this to the average user based on my setup experience since based on some reviews I’m assuming others have hit the same problems as well. First of all, I’ve setup Epson refillable printers previously, though I don’t like the top-load paper trays. From what I remember, their bottles were less accident prone and had an auto-stop feature when the tank was full. These HP bottles require you to remove the cap and then remove a seal inside… I nearly dropped one in the process and got ink on my hands. Could be better! Pretty sure the Epson's were wrapped on the outside and didn't require opening. Also, if you let it fill until it stops, there’s some excess ink that could be messy… if I didn’t fill all the way it seemed cleaner. From there, this is the first time I couldn’t get a printer to work out of the box. Since there’s no screen to input the wifi credentials (which seems to be a backwards trend with printers lately), that meant using the HP Smart App on my phone to set it up… ugh. The app recognized the printer right away, and my wifi network, but refused to connect. I worked around this by connecting my computer to the printer’s WiFi Direct SSID. Luckily with my Mac I could just install the printer from there automatically and access the printer’s built-in configuration webpage and manually join my wifi network. Took maybe two minutes. On Windows you’d probably need to figure out the IP or hostname of the printer yourself to bring up the settings page. Then, over the next two days the printer would constantly show as being unavailable, even though my network said it was still connected and I could ping it. This is a major problem with modern HPs that I see all the time: constantly getting into some sort of limbo state where it’s connected but not responding. Eventually I tried two things: in the printer configuration page again I turned off the 5GHz radio, and disabled IPv6. Sometimes this works for my customers, sometimes not. I’ve had this for over a month now and it hasn’t disconnected since. (I have Eero Pro 5s in my house for my wifi if curious.) When I don’t print for a while, the first page can take a minute or more to print, and while it’s doing whatever maintenance it’s doing, the computer thinks it’s not responding. It’s annoying, but I can tolerate it. I don’t know if this is one of those awful HPs that require you to setup an HP account to scan (insane!) but having a Mac means I never have to deal with that garbage because I just use Apple’s scanner app. I haven’t tried it in Windows yet, sorry. Some people had complaints about auto shut off and things like that – there are settings in the config webpage to change if it does that. If it’s connected to wifi it just goes to sleep like a normal printer. I use it for generic printing and #10 envelopes. I like that I can switch between the two size without having to tell it what paper is in it – unlike some of the newer OfficeJets. I miss the older printers that had automatic paper size detection and auto print head alignment, but everything is going backwards I guess. Bottom line: I'm happy enough with it that I would recommend it to someone that wouldn't have a problem working around its quirks if they run into them. Print quality seems fine.

Since when did printers get good?

I’m sure that we all have fought with our fair share of bad printers, but I was pleasantly surprised that the HP Smart Tank is a much needed change of pace. From the moment I took it out of the box, the Smart Tank has been an absolute joy to use, from it’s completely effortless setup to the fantastic print quality. So far, I am loving the ink bottles, and they seem to be far cheaper than a traditional cartridge - without sacrificing quality. And, the print quality and available features (like printing on both sides) are the best I’ve ever seen from an ink printer. Setup itself was completely effortless. I took it out the box, plugged in, and opted to use the guide in the HP Smart app on my Mac to setup. It was really easy to follow. After following the steps to connect it to the internet, it instantly showed up on every Apple device in my home via AirPrint, and setting it up on one of our Windows work computers was two clicks in settings. The print quality is unmatched. One of my more color intensive workloads is printing out notes I take on my iPad, and that involves different colored text and backgrounds, and the Smart Tank handled it super well. You can see in my photo that it keeps the outer margin to a minimum, and the colors look just like they do on my iPad screen. Other printing features like double sided printing work just like you’d expect them to, and we appreciate the flexibility in how we can print. Finally, if you’re curious on how the efficient the ink bottles are, we haven’t been able to get our ink levels to budge from 100%, and we’re printing 10-25 pages a week. I instantly fell in love with the bottle refills and I like that I’ll never have to deal with a cartridge again.

Stay away from these printers!

Black printhead died without warning at 5 months. I had to teleconference with HP support to show them it wouldn't print, prove that the black ink tank was full and show them the empty black ink line to the printhead along with explaining all of the troubleshooting steps I'd taken before contacting them. They told me it would take 2 weeks to ship me a replacement unless I wanted to pay $4 shipping and handling to expedite the replacement. In the end they just shipped it expedited at no charge after I protested. Do you really want to pay this much money for this kind of treatment? While the feature set of this model is impressive it does not appear to be reliable like some other printers I've had over the years. While the feature set of this model is impressive it does not appear to be reliable like some other printers I've had over the years. The literature boasts of thousands of pages out of a tank of ink but my black tank was half used at only 184 pages. Maybe that was because of my defective printhead or maybe it isn't as thrifty as they'd have you believe it is. The days of standalone software suits are gone and you must use the HP Smart utility located in the windows store. When it is functioning correctly its okay but once things go awry it will leave you pulling your hair out trying to figure out whats wrong. Imagine trying to run the provided diagnostic software only to see it fail each time you attempt to launch it. Or trying to run the printhead cleaner utility and see it error out each time to you click on the start button. Plus it doesn't have its own screen so you have to use the utility or learn the secret button combinations on the top of the printer to actuate different functions. Would I recommend this printer? Just run away from it folks and if you decide that you just have to have it get a geek squad warranty like I did so when it croaks outside of the factory warranty you can just haul it back to BB and get another printer. I'm going back to a color laser next time.

Works Well - Scanning is a disappointment
9 December 2022

My old printer (also a HP) died after about 12-years so I needed another. After researching the current market, I decided that one of the most important criteria I needed in a printer was lower costs of expendables. Rather than paying almost $200 for about 5000 pages, I wanted something that was less expensive. Since I have been using HP Printers for many years, I decided to stay with HP - the print quality is there. However, the descriptions on the Staples' website are confusing. In one location it says that this printer will print photos, but in the Specs, it says this printer does not do photos. The guy at the store was very helpful and informed me that it does photos very well. In one location it says that this printer will print photos, but in the Specs, it says this printer does not do photos. The guy at the store was very helpful and informed me that it does photos very well. The setup was fairly easy - with the app on an iPhone; however, the HP website has a way to install the printer without the phone app. Setup took a little longer than I expected (about 1/2 hour) but did not require any advanced computer skills. Print quality is good - as I expected. My old printer included a copy of IRIS for scanning. Apparently, HP has substituted a much less desirable scan program with significantly fewer capabilities, The OCR function barely works - which is important to me and I am disappointed with. I will likely have to purchase another OCR program at a large additional cost. The printer is able to print on both sides of a page, but the scanner is unable to do that. Why would HP allow me to print on both sides, but not scan on both sides? The included scanning program is, again, a disappointment. It does not allow you to make two passes of a scan and then organize the resulting PDF within the software. Overall, the printer does a good job - but I have had it only about 10 days and the scanning program is a disappointment.
